About

Nahko and Medicine for the People on Tour

Nahko and Medicine for the People are best experienced in concert. That's where this sprawling musical collective come alive, in the fertile call-and-response with the fellow travelers they call their fans. Nahko and company are on a journey, and it's got a lot to do with the self-discovery and healing that music makes possible. The group have been embraced for their positive messages and multiethnic musical approach, and they've become confirmed festival favorites, touring with the likes of Rebelution, Michael Franti and SOJA. Nahko is known as much for his political speechifying and spoken word as his singing, and any live show is sure to include both good vibes and powerfully political, justice-oriented content.

Nahko and Medicine for the People in Concert

The exuberantly tattooed Nahko, also known as Nahko Bear, grew up in Portland, Oregon. He was adopted into a white, religious family, but his birth family's heritage included Mohawk, Apache, Filipino and Puerto Rican ancestry. He has called on that heritage throughout his musical career, entwining songs of personal discovery with messages of social justice. Nahko showed musical aptitude early, playing piano and eventually picking up the guitar before going on to become a musical director. But the road called, and Bear took up an itinerant lifestyle, eventually landing in Hawaii. The beginnings of the band formed there, where Nahko met Australian 12-string guitarist Chase Makai, drummer Justin Chittams and trumpeter Max Ribner. Other musicians have come and gone along the way, but the band's core includes six full-time members. The group released their debut album, Dark as Night, in 2013, and followed it up quickly with 2014's On the Verge. They reappeared with Hoka in 2016 and the album reached 72 on the Billboard 200. In 2017, Bear returned to his solo roots with My Name Is Bear, an album of songs he wrote before forming the band.

    Stellar

by MR.LEEDS on 10/22/19Revolution Live - Ft Lauderdale

Stellar performance. The venue itself has been around so long & they have done such great renovation over the years. They need to touch up on the sound a bit but other than that, it was AMAZING! Thank you Revolution & Nahko & The Medicine People. I do wish that Nahko & his Team replied a bit more to their social media profiles but I guess I understand why they might not. Hope to see you in Vegas when I’m back in a week.

Good Show, could have been Great.

by JS on 10/22/19The Fillmore Charlotte presented by Cricket Wireless - Charlotte

Nahko and band was incredible. Sound and lights production were excellent. Venue staff were very welcoming and provided good customer service. Drinks were a little pricey, $12 for 19oz beer, but that was expected. We parked at our hotel and walked @20 mins to the venue (through a cemetery), which was fine, but I could see others not being as comfortable as we were. Ate dinner next door at German beer hall, good food and vibes. Lines were minimal to enter; Bag inspection/wanding was casual and not overly aggressive. My biggest beef was that they enforced an 11:00pm curfew which forced the show to end rather quickly. I don't understand why there would be ANY curfew for an indoor venue, in the middle of an industrial area, surrounded by highways and a cemetery. There seemed to be a 'sudden' realization of this by the artist and he had to rush through the final, most notable hit song. This was a disappointing end to what was a great concert experience. Venue management has to work on this if they want to draw out of town fans. I live in Greensboro and we have a new indoor venue with exact same amenities, that will soon be booking the same Live Nation talent that I drove 1.5 hrs to, and spent nearly $400 (dinner/tix/drinks/hotel/gas) to see. AND we don't have ridiculous indoor curfews to adhere to.

    Loved every minute!

    by B. F. on 10/20/19The Ritz - Raleigh

Nahko and Medicine for the People were tight, high energy, happy, and the crowd was amazing! I would have loved to buy VIP tickets but I never saw how to do so. The Ritz should have more free parking, and the security people outside were jerks, but once inside it was great.

    Wonderful!

by Terre on 10/19/19The Ritz - Raleigh

First of all, the venue is wonderful. Spacious and clean, with acoustics that sound just as good up front as they do near the bathrooms. I stand right up front, and the sound never became Charlie Brown's teacher ("whomp, whomp, whomp"). I have seen Medicine for the People in tiny basement venues (the bottom of the Old National Center in Indianapolis), huge ampitheatres (Red Rocks in Colorado), and outdoor festivals (Pyro Festival in Ohio). New buildings and old buildings, big and small. I loved The Ritz. It was so open it almost felt like you were outside. I traveled from Indiana for this show, and it was completely worth it. The show was one of their best, Natalie Rize was beautiful and powerful, and I got to enjoy all of it with many of my friends (who follow this band like I do).I have to say, this was one of my favorite venues for sound quality, comfort, and friendliness of staff since I started following them in 2013. We need more venues like The Ritz! (I would find a way to get there anytime Nahko and the guys were playing there!)

    Awesome show!

by E. on 10/15/19The St. Augustine Amphitheatre Backyard Stage - St Augustine

This band is so high energy and interacts with the audience. Though I just started listening to them, they have a dedicated fan base. Nahko Bear would stop singing and the audience would sing the chorus. It was one of the best shows I've ever been to; their message is so positive!

    Nahko backstage St. Augustine Amp

by J. A. on 10/15/19The St. Augustine Amphitheatre Backyard Stage - St Augustine

The weather was perfect, the crowd was lovely. The demographics in the audience included what seemed to be every age group...from infants wearing headphones to those of us in the "senior" category with all ages in between... and Nahko and his medicine band through all of their energy into an uplifting and memorable show. Thank you Nahko for giving us your all once again! I believe in the good things coming!

    Amazing show!

by Amber on 10/15/19The St. Augustine Amphitheatre Backyard Stage - St Augustine

The show itself was absolutely amazing but the venue is my least favorite place to see a show ever. Its not the main stage but a small side stage with standing-room-only, which sucks for someone that's only five feet tall. Most amphitheaters have a gradual rise so that you can move around and still get a good view no matter where you are this is not that kind of place, it was almost like standing in a gravely parking lot.
