I loved My Brother Marvin!!! It told what most of us already knew. It was reality in the cold light of day!!
None of his songs were sung at all, not even the music was played, likely due to copy rights. The story of life and death has been on television numerous times and nothing new was revealed. Saturday , 2/16/13 was terrible travel conditions in the Metro Detroit area. It took us 2 and 1/2 hours to get to the play, it was not worth the hassle.
This was a dynamic play. The story was intriguing, exciting, and full of surprises. They need to allow Zeola to have the rights to the music, because that would really make the play one of the best black plays in recent years.
Was looking forward to learning about Marvin's life from sister's perspective and to hear Marvin Gaye's music live. Very disappointed to learn that Marvin's songs would not be sung. I would not have purchased tickets if I had known in advance. Very deceptive marketing to withhold this critical piece of information. The story was riveting. The acting and script very good but not great. The story lost its power without the music and was made worse by hints to the songs without them actually being played. It was strange to see the characters of Tina Turner, David Ruffin and esepcially Berry Gordy played as cartoonish. Also, there is a scene out of nowhere that shows Marvin involved with the mob as promoters of his tours, which isn't fully explained since he was a major recording star signed to a major record label. Why would he have needed a mob promoter?
It was selfish and misleading to sell tickets to a play about Marvin Gaye with none of Marvin's music. The play was also packed with "fillers," like the Az Yet song and a random Tina Turner performance. My wife and i were quite disappointed.
First of all my overall review was ok. I feel like Ms. Gaye & Clifton Powell mislead the general tv audience by not telling them that they were not allowed to sing "any" of Marvin's music. I, along with many of my friends that attended the event were not happy at all. Secondly, I felt like the price of the tickets were too pricey for such a lack of performance without Marvin's music. I totally understand about the death threats, and owners not releasing the rights to the music is the reason why it was the way it was but the fans that paid for the tickets should of known about it in advance. This is called false advertisement. What was said on the local news was there would be more story telling & less music. They did not say "NO" Marvin Gaye music. I can go on &on about how dissatisfied I was...so therefore I will surely spread the word...Thumbs down! Should of seen it 6 yrs ago!!!
There was NO Marvin Gaye music in it. it was the most amateurish play we've ever seen. It was pointless. We all thought we'd hear Marvin's music and there was no licensing for it to be used. The screaming in it hurt my ears. I'd like a refund it was that BAD!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought the play was excellent. It gave me a new insight to Marvin Gaye the person. The actors were excellent. The play had lots of energy and kept me interested the whole time I was there
it was a very good play. they could sing very well. I learned a story i never knew about.
I really didn't like the fact they couldn't use any of Marvin's music. I would have been 100% better with it. Then you could really tie it all together.
This was a (true life drama) PLAY about the life of Marvin! (Not at Concert!) The story was a well told (behind the music) with clear understanding of the (man) Marvin Gaye! His family was disfunctional, and he was an arrogant, self-distructive person!) No one promised a musical concert! __ GREAT JOB! __ Thumbs Up to Zeola Gaye!
the overall experience of going to a play was good.. the play was fair to watch it would have been better if they had sung actual marvin gaye songs...
THE CAST OF " MY BROTHER MARVIN " WERE ENERGETIC WHILE DISPLAYING RIVETING PERFORMANCES..LED BY LYNN WHITFIELD, THE TWO ACTS WERE BOTH INSIGHTFUL AND FULL OF LAUGHTER INDUCED HUMOR!!!!!!!!!!
Was truly disappointed expected to hear some old Motown songs and Marvin Gaye originals. I guess they were not able to get misic rights released from Motown. Only heard "similar" to songs which was dissappointing.
They couldn't use his music! Good story line, though at times a like confusing to follow. The actors were good, the singers were good, they just needed his music !
I think that actors did a nice job but I think it was sad that zeola couldnt even play her own brothers music if you are going to tell a story tell it all we were expecting to here some of marvins best hits that was wrong they shouldnt did her thar way
I was expecting to hear Marvin Gaye song and was told it was not permitted. The acting was good and it gave a more insite on Marvins life. But the lack of Marvins was a bummer.... We love Marvin Actors was great to use what they had to use ..... Release Marvins music and it will be a 5 star play................
The truth comes to light...the play was very good and emotional.
this screenplay had good intentions but should not have received the greenlight to be produced if his music was not able to be played in the show. marvin was his music. you can't make a movie, screenplay, or anything without it. this is not the fault of zeola or the producers, but it was definitely lacking something major! as creative as the band tried to be, they couldn't compensate. there were scenes that did not flow with the storyline. perhaps this should have been left alone in the book format. acting and dancing was mediocre. maybe more practice rehearslas? lynn whitfield was good.
The play was ok but disappointing because we didn't hear Marvin Gaye's songs. That was the purpose of going. They had simulated songs. It was a long play that didn't tell us nothing we didn't already know. I thought we were going to get something different. Enjoyed actors.
