Being 30 years old, I'm hardly mxmtoon's usual demographic. Nevertheless, I connected to her charming music and was excited to see her live. Hyper, squealing tweens took up the main audience area, while their parents stood along the walls looking bored. I'm sure they weren't amused by Chloe Lilac, the teenage opening act, who sang about stealing liquor and smoking cigarettes all the while dancing around the stage in a sparkling bikini top. I liked Chloe's performance, but it seemed like such a bad choice to pair her with mxmtoon, the wholesome bedroom pop queen. Anyway, Maia sounded amazing, just like on her album, and only one small moment left a bad taste in my mouth. Near the beginning of her set, fans in the front row started handing her gifts and she took a couple but then refused a third. Made kind of a snarky comment about how we paid to see her sing, not get presents. I felt so bad for that fan, it must have been heartbreaking (and also embarrassing!) for them. TBH I adore seeing audience interaction and "real" moments more than just singing, and it felt harsh of her to say what she did. She has been posting on socials that she's only sleeping 4 hours a day on tour, so I'm sure she's cranky. Sounds like touring should be made healthier for the artists! Overall I had a good time.
