Murder Ballad: A New Musical

“Grab a beer, get a table and make like you’re at a rock concert!” –Time Out New York

Recipient of five Lucille Lortel nominations, including Best Musical!

A love triangle gone wrong, MURDER BALLAD centers on Sara, an Upper West Sider who seems to have it all, but whose downtown past lingers enticingly and dangerously in front of her. This sexy, explosive new musical explores the complications of love, the compromises we make, and the betrayals that can ultimately undo us.

MURDER BALLAD will play the Union Square Theatre for nine weeks only, transferring from its acclaimed sold-out engagement at Manhattan Theatre Club.

    Murder Ballad

Outstanding. Anyone who is even thinking of seeing a show should consider this one, and what a bargain price. An 80 minute rock musical that builds and builds until the fantastic final scene. Four amazing performers with beautiful voices who nailed their parts to the point I was truly believing the characters and was completely lost in the story. I saw Pippin the same weekend and loved it, but Murder Ballad blew it away by a mile. Thank you for a fantastic performance. Inspiring.

Murder Ballad was riviting with a surprise ending

by Glenys on 7/10/13Union Square Theatre - New York

Four people with the talent of a dozen. The music was terrific and the story line was clear, concise, and easily related to. The cast members voices and acting ability really brought the message across loud and clear. The theater seating is excellent, but the seats we had were perfection with the performers stopping at our table for some up close singing. An 80 minute show with no intermission that goes by in a flash. I can't say enough good about this performance. It was extremely enjoyable and very memorable.

Perhaps one of the best new bits of musical theater, or rather rock opera, that has come out in the longest time. There is no way to not be swept away by the amazing score, the story, the emotion..... It is insane that it will close July 21st.... especially when you see how the audience reacted and it looked like a pretty full house. As for me, I purchased tickets to see it two more times before it closes......nuff said!

    Outstanding!

by CPBridges on 7/10/13Union Square Theatre - New York

We were blown away by this production! The acting and singing was superb. All four of these talented actors will capture you from the moment the music begins. The music was great! This production was inspirational to our son who is studying theatre at NYU. We would love to see this production flourish and make it to Broadway!

    Really, really well done

by fschirrmeister on 7/9/13Union Square Theatre - New York

This was truly a great musical evening. The score was awesome, reminded of Greenday a bit. Clear usage of Leitmotifs to introduce different moods and themes made it a really fun experience.

Murder Ballad -- great music & acting perfomances

by Anonymous on 7/7/13Union Square Theatre - New York

Compelling, energetic, sexy, up close and personal fun. The music was edgy and modern. The 4 actors all gave excellent, powerful performances. Very interesting concept of theater set up like a bar -- the result was intimate seating with great views and actors interacting with those seated at table seats on stage. I'd highly recommend seeing this show before they end their run.

    Mediocre

by yevster on 7/7/13Union Square Theatre - New York

Lots of melodramatic belting, guitar screeching, all while the characters remained paper-thin, the story cliche, the music forgettable and uninspired, the seating chaotic... All in all, this show is closing soon, and I, for one, won't miss it.

    Murder Ballad was unique!

by popgirl62 on 7/6/13Union Square Theatre - New York

Not having ever seen theater "in the round" I was surprised at the set-up for the stage. I wondered where it was! Yet, being a theater lover, I waited and was NOT disappointed. Murder ballad was a powerful story and the actors did an amazing job drawing me into the story of a love triangle gone bad. I'd recommend it to a friend, and I'd remind them to check for the discounts that might be available at Ticketmaster. The $49 price was a promo I found using my smart phone while waiting to go through the Lincoln Tunnel, just a couple hours before show time. They were waiting in the box office will call, which was great considering there was just a couple hours before showtime.

    Murder Ballad

by HAMB on 7/5/13Union Square Theatre - New York

This rock opera(?) was unoriginal and boring. Couldn't understand any of the words in the first 10-15 minutes of the show due to the loud music and poor diction on the part of the actress. Very loud music continued to interfer with the actors. The only suspense in the show was whether the woman or the lover were going to die. We knew at the beginning of the 2nd act that question was the only unknown. The story has been much better done in many variations by others. Liked the staging and the movements of the actor. The set was effective.

by ShellyW99 on 7/3/13Union Square Theatre - New York

What a wonderfully talented group of performers. This is not a musical genre that would be for me. I thanked my son for recommending it. Try to get seats that are elevated from the stage

    see Murder Ballad

by fondamusic on 7/1/13Union Square Theatre - New York

Murder Ballad is essentially a rock opera, a la Rent or Next to Normal. (Personally, I liked it better than Rent.) There are only four people in the cast, but they all have stunning voices. We saw Josh Tower in the role of Michael and he was wonderful. The songs are not separate and distinct, but blend into one another. As the show goes on, the music becomes more cohesive and familiar, although you will not walk out singing the songs. The harmonies are performed beautifully. The characters move about the audience, and you feel as if you are peeking in someone's window to learn secrets about their private lives. It is captivating. Don't miss it!
