Murder Ballad: A New Musical

“Grab a beer, get a table and make like you’re at a rock concert!” –Time Out New York

Recipient of five Lucille Lortel nominations, including Best Musical!

A love triangle gone wrong, MURDER BALLAD centers on Sara, an Upper West Sider who seems to have it all, but whose downtown past lingers enticingly and dangerously in front of her. This sexy, explosive new musical explores the complications of love, the compromises we make, and the betrayals that can ultimately undo us.

MURDER BALLAD will play the Union Square Theatre for nine weeks only, transferring from its acclaimed sold-out engagement at Manhattan Theatre Club.

What a great show, so much fun. We went on a sunday matinee and we were all blown away. The music is great, and the story is brilliant. I would recommend this to anybody! Sit at a center table if you want to have fun!

New Genre and we love it

by dca1125 on 5/13/13Union Square Theatre - New York

Murder Ballad is one of the new genre of performance and we love it. There is an informality and youthfulness that works. Timeless story. Attractive performers with wonderful singing voices.....really well cast. We bought "premium seats" and that was a mistake. Given the physicality of the room, these were not the best place to be. Maybe best to be seated at a table on what becomes the stage??? There's something about this that reminded us of Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1912 when it was at Ars Nova..........but not...........but yes. By the way, we loved Natasha etc and will be following it to the tent. We found ourselves a little above the niche demographic for this..........we think it's 35 - 55.......but thoroughly enjoyed ourselves

    Kickass cast

by Atakis86 on 5/12/13Union Square Theatre - New York

Easily the best show downtown and off broadway for that matter. A much tighter cast than when it was at MTC. The actors have really fallen into their roles. And Caissie Levy plays an amazing Sarah. The real show stopper is Rebecca though...talk about bringing down the house! Go see this show. I'm totally taking my friends to see it again.

    Murder Ballad was Awesome!

by ultrabayer on 5/12/13Union Square Theatre - New York

Loved Murder Ballad from beginning to end! Having the audience sitting in the bar area where the action took place was very inventive and loved the fact that the entire audience was close was great. The entire show was sung and the music had a great rock edge to it! Will be seeing this show again very soon!

    Murder Ballad Shocks and Awes

by coda320 on 5/11/13Union Square Theatre - New York

Murder Ballad is a great, small musical. 80 minutes long, with just 4 characters, it holds your interest thru the compelling performances and the clever, well-paced book and lyrics. Band is loud and uninteresting, almost all songs scored for guit/bass/drums & starting with a generic rock riff. They're not bad, per se, but sound familiar and quote Springsteen and Motown. But overall effect is compelling and watchable. Sets and lighting are beautifully done to evoke the downtown urban vibe.

Let me explain the 3 stars. I would recommend this play if it was not the price of a broadway production. The staging of the piece made it difficult to see the acting. Literally there were times when the actors were across the room with their backs turned to part of the audience. The music was good, and yes they can sing. The emotion came across and was griping. I think this piece could have gone deeper into the characters. It barely scratched the surface. I enjoyed the piece, but wish I had better seats.

    Murder Ballad is Awesome!!!

by BwayGuy12 on 5/8/13Union Square Theatre - New York

I didn't know what to expect, but Murder Ballad blew me away. The show starts off as a bit intriquing but it builds and builds in intensity as it takes off. The performances are amazing (Will Swenson, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Caissie Levy, and John Ellison Conlee) and the ending is really surprising. I was on the edge of my seat wondering who was going to murder whom...it really could have been any of the characters! The Union Square Theatre has been ripped apart to create the bar setting (in fact you can order beers from the onstage bar before the show). Very cool! When the show ended they were selling a lot of the cast album cds!
