About

It began as one man’s story… became everyone’s music… and is now Broadway’s musical. MOTOWN THE MUSICAL is the true American dream story of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson and many more. Motown shattered barriers, shaped our lives and made us all move to the same beat. Featuring classic songs such as “My Girl” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” experience the story behind the music in the record-breaking smash hit MOTOWN THE MUSICAL!

    Handclapping Fun

    by Lala9999 on 10/7/17Cadillac Palace - Chicago

So many memories of the hits and stars of Motown in this show. The woman portraying Diana Ross was phenomenal! Choreography was great. The negative: The woman behind us singing (poorly) to every song. I also found the actual story line a little weak, but overall it was a great evening.

    Motown was well done

    by Skater4life on 10/6/17Cadillac Palace - Chicago

Sound check could be better on performances. Some of the actors voices were very low. Some of the background overpowered the lead singer in some scenes. Overall the performance was good. Being a theater major I was a little disappointed with the production. I bought tickets to celebrate a friends birthday.

I was born in the wrong ERA

    by tataylo3 on 10/6/17Cadillac Palace - Chicago

I have always listened to old school music, but this show made me wish I was born during that time. I wanted to get up and dance in the aisles. Amazing show!!!!! Great music!!!!!

Motown the Musical is the Best!

by mjefromcu on 10/10/14Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The cast was extremely talented - especially loved the Dianna Ross and Marvin Gaye performances. Wish I could see it again! My sister and I knew all the songs and felt the performers did them justice. Fun reliving the era of "come together with love" songs like "Reach out and Touch". I wish we had more good song writers and musicians like that now! The costumes were amazingly beautiful. Choreography and dancing so enjoyable. The Oriental Theatre was a great venue for Motown the Musical but the parking is way too expensive ($35)!

    Motown was a nice tribute.

The performance was nice with some standout moments. Only wished some of the musical numbers were longer. Audience participation portion of the show was fun.

    Great Cast

by Cinman4 on 8/17/14Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

A great solid cast really made the show. Reed Shannon as young Michael Jackson was outstanding. Allison Semmes as Diana Ross made you swear it was Diana. Clifton Oliver was also terrific as Berry Gordy. I could listen to the music all night. Motown was one of the best labels ever and a shame the mega labels took control of the industry.

    Motown was just okay

by Babs456 on 8/17/14Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Motown was just okay. Certainly not the best musical I've seen. More music would have made it better.

    Soulful Blast From The Past

by Coe7 on 8/14/14Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I went to see the musical with 6 family members. Everyone enjoyed it! The music was incredible, the storyline was poignant, their wardrobe nostalgic! It really took you back in time. And the theatre was absolutely beautiful! Is this the same Oriental theater that I used to go to and watch really bad karate movies?! The only (half) negative I have about the musical is that I think the portrayal of Barry Gordy was a bit inaccurate. Watching his career as I did growing up, I don't recall him being such a nice guy...

    Motown

by booparoop on 8/14/14Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I thought the show was great! The music, of course, was fantastic! I wish I could've heard more dialogue. Berry Gordy had an interesting career with Motown, but some of the dialogue was lost. The only disappointing part of the show was people who arrived late and had to have assistance looking for their seat. If more than 15 minutes late, people should have to wait til intermission or stand.

    Motown the best time!

by LeFontaine on 8/14/14Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Motown the Musical does it all - provides fantastic entertainment, engages the audience and offers insights to a rocking pivotal time in American history. Those of us who lived and danced during those times were able to relive the pulse and meaning of how we changed a nation. For those who only heard about the times, it provides a glimpse of a generation whose music clearly expressed love and the need to make the world a better place.

    Motown the Musical was fantastic!

by DustyD on 8/14/14Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Caught the very last Chicago performance of Motown the Musical on August 9th. Loved it! It was good to reconnect with the moods and music of my youth. I had forgotten just how much music Motown produced. The acting, singing and dancing were great. I could have had more Marvin Gaye. Why no reference to Tami Terrell, Marvin's duet partner before she feel terminally ill with brain cancer? All together, Motown the Musical was a wonderful presentation.

The show was great. The characters playing Diana Ross and Michael Jackson were the best in the entire show. I learned some new things about Motown. However, the theatre seats are terrible. There is not enough leg room and the seats are too small!
