MOS DEF / YASIIN BEY IN CONCERT:

As one of hip hop's most revered lyricists, Mos Def never ceases to surprise and impress with his dexterous flow. On stage, he cuts a stylish figure, effortlessly displaying his wordsmithing skills, charismatic energy, and boundless positivity while paying tribute to cultural icons like Mohammed Ali. Whether performing with longtime collaborator Talib Kweli or rolling solo, Mos makes sure crowds are bumped, grinded, and fully educated in the "fundamental mathematics" of his intricate verses, laying it down as only he can on tracks like "Ms. Fat Booty" and "Body Rock." With a highly anticipated new album in the works, Mos will treat fans to another dose of cerebral hip hop on his 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Dante Terrell Smith, best known by his stage names Mos Def and Yasiin Bey, is a Brooklyn-born rapper, actor, and producer. His hip hop career began in the early '90s with local alt-rappers Da Bush Babees and De La Soul, with whom he collaborated before releasing his debut single "Universal Magnetic." In 1998, he teamed up with Talib Kweli to form the duo Black Star, whose debut LP is considered a contemporary classic and major influence over the "backpack rap" scene. As a solo artist, Mos Def has released four albums to critical and commercial acclaim, firmly establishing his reputation as one of the genre's most stylish lyricists. Reuniting with Talib Kweli for several highly anticipated Black Star shows in 2014, Mos has fans eagerly awaiting more as rumors of new material mount.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"This was a dreamy, uplifting, soul-satisfying, freaky, funky time well spent!"

"I've always wanted to see MOS DEF/Yasiin Bey in concert. He didn't disappoint... Great energy..!"

"Mos is 100% in the moment and his show was an intimate experience with a nearly sold out crowd of true Mos Def fans. Great ambiance, music, flow -- and who knew Mos could step and dance like he did."

  • Erykah Badu was sensational!!

by Kiweelyn on 9/7/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

loved it! The place was perfect, the elegance of the SF symphony hall added the extra touch to this concert. Erykah was awesome, her singing and lyrics makes you reflect on yourself. Both of them, even Mos def... with his fast tongue delivers an inspirational night. LOVED THIS CONCERT!!

  • Positive energy

by Jazzyteach on 9/7/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

The whole concert was great, from the venue to the fantastic seats (center stage, 6 rows back), to all of the artists who performed. I had never even heard of Jay Electronica before but he turned out to be funny & a real lyricist. Eykah's set with the Cannabinoids was different from the previous times I've seen her- no band or backup singers, just dj's. Everyone got to highlight his talents. Mos Def rocked the mic & brought great humble, positive energy to the stage.

  • The show was SICK!

    by PrettyGurlInk on 9/7/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

As always, Erykah was flawless! And Mos....his vibe is infectious. The energy was amazing and he was on point. When he broke out with his tribute to MJ...I completely lost it!!! I'm so glad I was able to be a part of it!

  • The Ecstatic Tour lived up to it's title

by Corizzle on 9/7/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Every Performer commanded the crowd whether it be the comedy and lyrical skill of J Elec, or the expansive/out of this world set of Miss Badu and the Cannabinoids, or the power, soul and charisma of the Mighty Mos Def. I left the show appreciating the work each artist did in their lives to grow, expand, express, and deliver. Great show.

  • Erykah Badu and Mos Def rock, Jay can get lost

    by ChrispyOwl on 9/7/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

Great performance other than the 2 hoiurs if time wasting by Jay Electronica. If Badu and Mos Def weren't so great, I'd have felt ripped. I didn't pay money for a bad comedy show, asking the audience who likes myspace. Desperate.

  • Erykah is the best

    by thatognamee on 9/6/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

i love Erykah badu show she did a good mix of old and new. I hope the next time she come to town she go on last. i never want to see jay electronica.he is the weakest rapper in the world. The whole world

  • Erykah Badu and Mos Def

    by AppleD209 on 9/6/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 2 out of 5

I was very disappointed in Ms. Badu’s performance because she did not sing her songs on this tour. I wanted to kick back and vibe off of her beautiful voice and the songs from her classic first album. I would have preferred to hear her with a live band also! For the amount of money I spent in this current economic environment I feel cheated and would like a refund. I am a little pissed off and she left a bad taste in my mouth! I will not come out again for her. She is really nice and is a lovely sista but the show was nothing to remember. I'll just play my CD.

  • Mos Def was absolute Quality

    by MuleDriver on 9/6/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 3 out of 5

    E. Badu and Mos Def are quality artist and their performances never disappoint. However, I will say the every year E seems to get a little weirder. Way too much dialog and not enough music. At some points I felt like I was a some cult gathering. Will always love her but not sure I'll spend the $90 next year. Mos, on the other hand, was awesome! Deep, thought provoking lyrics and body moving beats. Never tires. peace!

  • New fan of MOS DEF

    by Jet4evr on 9/5/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Never have been into rap artist but MOS DEF has a new fan ME. He was so good that I never sat down and neither did the crowd. It was like a party that you didn't want to end. Everyone was dancing. I am a die hard ERYKAH fan and always will be. She got so much talent inside her and she has tapped into all her realms of talent. She is unstoppable. BUT that MOS DEF he is a bad mutha .....

  • The introductory acts were deplorable!

    by bjae on 9/5/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 3 out of 5

Erka Badu is remarkably creative and should have the night to herself; even her "rapping" was understandable and politically progressive. Mos def needs to strive for better clarity. I think he has a valuable message, but he needs to lower the music and walk his talk. I think his messages have valuable political and empowering value, but lower the music and let the message prevail!!!!

  • ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

by VneckSaffron on 9/5/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 1 out of 5

I was very excited to see this show. However, Badu and Mos lacked any energy or charisma to get the crowd involved. I saw numerous people falling asleep around me during both of their sets (half people walked out during Mos's performance). Mos's performance was eclectic (and boring) to say the least. You couldn't tell what he was mumbling most of the time and nobody knew the songs he was doing. They were also at an amazing venue, but neither seemed to notice. No live band, no special performances. I would definitely say save your $$ next time.

I am a HUGE Erykah Badu fan, but I was so disappointed in the show. I have seen her a few times before and she didn't seem herself. Plus, Jay Electronica who was opening wouldn't stop talking! Mos Def came on much later and he was good as usual, but overall it wasn't a good show. They were definitely on something...

  • Mos Definitely!

    by Jaimerz on 9/5/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

I was there to see Erykah, but Mos Def rocked the show. My fave part was the MJ tribute! Mos has such a nice voice! I would have loved more Erykah but overall the show was awesome!

  • I fell asleep

    by musicbug on 9/5/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 1 out of 5

This was my first time seeing both. Erykah Badu tried to be interesting and edgy but didn't do it for me. One or two numbers were decent but not that special. Nothing to make you feel good or inspired. She is sort of detached and playing for effect. She said Hello San Francisco twice until someone told her she was in Oakland. I wasn't that familiar with her music but my wife wanted to go. For me there was not much to hold my interest. Mos Def was a little better but I was dissapointed after hearing so much about him. He did do a pretty good Michael Jackson number and excellent moon walk. I was looking forward to his great lyrics and hooks but the sound was cranked up too loud and the bass was too strong to hear anything.

  • YEAHH

    by Jswift on 9/5/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

So good to see some them bust out together for a moment. Taking it back old school...

  • Eryka Badu, Mos Def, a great couple.

    by Know on 9/5/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

The Oakland Paramount is a large and beautiful theater. The parking was pretty good, parked about a block away. They served alcohol, and the seating was perfect. Eryka Badu's performance was killer. She made live beats, and her interaction with the rest of the Cannabinoids was great. Eryka rocked it old school and new and everything in between. MOS DEF was a hit. Loved seeing him perform his new album Ecstatic. He moved smoothly accross the floor like the king of pop. He did the moon walk, performed some of Michael's songs and even wore the kinds glove. DOPE!

  • Mos & Erykah were Amazing!!!!!!!!!!

    by Flacachula on 9/5/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Best show I have seen so far. Have seen them both before and I have so say that this tour is the best. Cannot wait to see them again.

  • such a dissappointment

by dissapointedmoserykah on 9/5/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 1 out of 5

i had high expectations that I would be getting my $80 worth to see mos def and erykah badu in one night. 1st i was so confused and disappointed in badu's performance. no band, just digital boards, drum machines, 2 keyboards, and a dj or two. it seemed far too experimental and garage band practice rather than a show that cost what i would normally pay for a weekend of fun. mos was in another zone. far different and distant from the man we all knew back then. seemed both of them were trying to create a new genre but unfortunately it all sounded like garbage to me. plenty of people were gone halfway through his performance. we stayed til we couldn't anymore. hope the find themselves again. would give them another chance...but not for 80 bucks. peace

  • Mos and erykah were the bomb!
