MOS DEF / YASIIN BEY IN CONCERT:

As one of hip hop's most revered lyricists, Mos Def never ceases to surprise and impress with his dexterous flow. On stage, he cuts a stylish figure, effortlessly displaying his wordsmithing skills, charismatic energy, and boundless positivity while paying tribute to cultural icons like Mohammed Ali. Whether performing with longtime collaborator Talib Kweli or rolling solo, Mos makes sure crowds are bumped, grinded, and fully educated in the "fundamental mathematics" of his intricate verses, laying it down as only he can on tracks like "Ms. Fat Booty" and "Body Rock." With a highly anticipated new album in the works, Mos will treat fans to another dose of cerebral hip hop on his 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Dante Terrell Smith, best known by his stage names Mos Def and Yasiin Bey, is a Brooklyn-born rapper, actor, and producer. His hip hop career began in the early '90s with local alt-rappers Da Bush Babees and De La Soul, with whom he collaborated before releasing his debut single "Universal Magnetic." In 1998, he teamed up with Talib Kweli to form the duo Black Star, whose debut LP is considered a contemporary classic and major influence over the "backpack rap" scene. As a solo artist, Mos Def has released four albums to critical and commercial acclaim, firmly establishing his reputation as one of the genre's most stylish lyricists. Reuniting with Talib Kweli for several highly anticipated Black Star shows in 2014, Mos has fans eagerly awaiting more as rumors of new material mount.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"This was a dreamy, uplifting, soul-satisfying, freaky, funky time well spent!"

"I've always wanted to see MOS DEF/Yasiin Bey in concert. He didn't disappoint... Great energy..!"

"Mos is 100% in the moment and his show was an intimate experience with a nearly sold out crowd of true Mos Def fans. Great ambiance, music, flow -- and who knew Mos could step and dance like he did."

    Gil Scott Heron Tribute

by PaulPablo on 4/16/12Howard Theatre - Washington

It was supposed to be a Gil Scott Heron tribute. Mos is good, the band was good. There was way too much chatter in the audience. I also think Mos should have played more of Gil's songs and mixed in more familiar songs like Winter In America, Spirits, The Bottle, Angel Dust. I think most people were expecting to or wanted to hear MD songs.

    Disappointed

by TriniNJ on 4/16/12Howard Theatre - Washington

My review of this event was lackluster due to two main reasons. First, the event was suppose to start at 11pm but unfortunately began at 12:40 am. I am not sure what the circumstances were but I felt that someone at the Howard Theater could have informed patrons about the tardiness to allay the situation. Also, if you have a international star like Mos why wouldn't you play his music while patrons wait? I heard every other artists except for him-that blew me away!! Second, after waiting I anticipated some classics like: Sunshine, Ms. Fat Booty, Danger, Got, Brooklyn, Katrina Clap, or anything that would be well known by his fans but that wasn't the case. As a result, I was disappointed.

    Loved every minute!

by CB62 on 4/16/12The Howard Theater - Washington

The show started late. Most likely because there was another performer before the Yasiin Show. It was a great performance. He came out and got right to business. He grooved to his own music the way each person in the venue would have done. The 3 piece band was fantasic. When Yasiin got on the keys....it was an absolute delight. I would definately see him again. Some seemed upset that he didn't do Ms. Fat Booty, but that song in particular did not fit with the set. It was very much a tribute to Gil Scott Heron...he did a fabolous job and I would definately pay to see him again. The venue was perfect for the set he performed. You could see the stage with a clear view from every seat. Very comfortable and not over crowded.

Definitely love Mos yet what a let down.

    by Sunny45s on 4/16/12Howard Theatre - Washington

Dude was an hour late. Thank if for spending our money. Then spent 49 minutes singing before peacing out. That's right. 49 minute show, no opening act. The Howard is amazing yet I was they had opened more standing room. Kinda hard thinging of a sit down hip hop show. Yet then Mos only reall sang.

Peace Yasiin Bey.....Yo he had a hot show at The Howard Theater. Big up to his band. I could feel that he truly loved the great Gil Scot Heron. He rocked " Home is where the hatred is". The song is one of my personal favorite and Yasiin put his heart into that rendition, so I appreciate that one.

Great show but intermission was too long

by BilWithOneL on 12/14/11Wilbur Theatre - Boston

We just moved to Boston and this was our first time to Wilbur Theatre. We will definitely go back. We went to the show for the Bad Rabbits and they were fantastic. Mos Def and the opening act were also great. Was Most Def worth the hour long intermission? I guess... he is pretty amazing, but... come on, show a little respect for the fans.

    Good except for timing

by Daddynbaby on 12/12/11Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Opening acts were great!! Very entertaining local bands which was awesome. After the second one was done, waited almost an hour looking at an empty stage and decided to leave. I'm older (40), my wife is younger (32). If I were in my 20's I probably wouldn't care. We have been following him since his early days, so were excited to see the show. I'm sure those who stayed enjoyed the show, he is a phenomenal artist. I didn't peg him for a diva, don't have that kind of patience anymore

    Mos always does his thing

    by hallewud23 on 12/12/11Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Mos loves to perform and that always shines through. Plus, he did traveling man, which was dope. I only take off one star because he came out a little late and there was no dj or anything keeping the crowd going in between performers.

    Ecstatic

by sigpone on 12/12/11Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Mos is 100% in the moment and his show was an intimate experience with a nearly sold out crowd of true Mos Def fans. Love that he chooses venues where you can engage with him and his music no matter where you sit. His DJ's are exceptional and it was worth the 2 hour drive to attend. Great ambiance, music, flow, and who knew Mos could step and dance like he did.

    Mos Def was SUPER LATE!

    by Ladyday1920 on 12/12/11Wilbur Theatre - Boston

I took my boyfriend to the show for his birthday. The opening acts were awesome! Especially Bad Rabbits. It was however quite annoying that for an 8 p.m. start time, Mos Def didn't hit the stage until 10:45. After the 2 opening acts there was almost an hour of waiting in the theater for him to hit the stage. During this time the lights came on and the there was some Afro Beat music playing in the background. By the time he hit the stage, neither one of us felt that his performance was worth the wait. Honestly we left feeling like we would have rather just seen a whole show by Bad Rabbits, which is sad because we are both HUGE Mos Def fans.

First time I walked out of a show early

    by BE79 on 12/12/11Wilbur Theatre - Boston

This was the first time I left a show. I love Mos Def and I saw him a few years ago in SF and loved the show. That was not the case this time. The opening acts, Moe Pope and Bad Rabbits were great. Then we had to wait an hour for Mos Def to come on. When he finally came on, you could barely make out a word he said and he spent a bunch of time dancing around to other peoples' music. He seemed wasted or something. There was definitely something wrong with the sound so I can't blame him for that but his performance was pretty bad and we left after the fourth or fifth song. My other friends left before he came on because they got sick of waiting. I saw a number of folks leave during the show. What a disappointment

Bad Rabbits(the opening act) was amazing. They got the crowd excited and dancing. The concert was going amazingly UNTIL Mos Def made us wait like an hour and a half for him

Concert was great.. wait time left me wanting

by ohso on 12/11/11Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Mos Def was so good and the opening acts were very enjoyable, but it took over 1.5 hours for him to come on stage after the opening acts had removed their set. Also a lot of time was spent on 2 new songs whereas I would have just wanted to hear more.

A true artist and performer! I tried to send just that comment but it was returned siting my comment was too short. Maybe this will be enough. Mos Def impressed me in more ways that I had expected.
