Monty Python's Spamalot on Tour
Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this adaptation of Monty Python's classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail returns with its gleefully absurdist spin on the legend of King Arthur. Featuring hilarious songs written by original Python member Eric Idle (along with music by composer John du Prez), Spamalot is a riotous display of medieval costumery, bumbling swordplay, silly dances, gloriously over-the-top sing-alongs and, of course, killer rabbits. A surefire, laugh-out-loud crowd-pleaser from start to finish, Spamalot is a reminder to — as its famous closing number goes — always look on the bright side of life.
Monty Python's Spamalot Background
Released just after their sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus completed its legendary five-year run on the BBC, the 1975 film Monty Python and The Holy Grail proved the British comedy troupe could successfully adapt its wacky sensibility to feature-length narratives. Their ridiculous, proudly blasphemous retelling of King Arthur's quest for the titular religious touchstone became an instant cult classic and, 30 years after its release, provided the inspiration for Python's maiden voyage onto Broadway. Conceived by founding member Eric Idle, Spamalot adapted The Holy Grail into a musical featuring new songs and a few reworked tunes from the Python canon (including a revision of the Life of Brian classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"). Spamalot's original Broadway production was directed by veteran filmmaker Mike Nichols and starred Rocky Horror Picture Show alum Tim Curry in the lead role of King Arthur; it would go on to be nominated for a whopping 14 Tony Awards, winning three of them (including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical). A massive box office success that grossed over $175 million in its first run, Spamalot has effectively toured the world in perpetuity since its debut, spawning countless community-theater productions in the process.
Really enjoyed the show funny, crass, great actors. Everyone Monty Python should be.
Great show worth every penny. We laughed so hard we almost cried
Got to stick with it to get all the jokes. not for the light hearted and easily offendable. Glad I went.
Spamalot was incredible! I laughed so hard I cried. All of the characters were perfect, just as good as when I saw it on Broadway in 2005. The Lady of the Lake, Lancelot, and Patsy were particularly outstanding.
Amazing performance and the cast took time to meet with everybody after the show. The theater was in a convenient area and very close to a parking deck. Would go again for sure!
A touring company presentation was never better. Fun, silly, and a touch of yiddish (hey - err, hay)! A great evening at a beautiful venue. Python heaven even for those who may not be old enough to remember the comedy of Chapman, Cleese, Gilliam, Jones, Palin (not Sarah) and, of course, Idle (at least his voice).
I had never seen Spamalot before, so other than a few things, it was all new. I think that made it even more fun. I loved the absurdity of the story. The performances were terrific. You could tell the actors had a great time performing. It was a wonderful production. I wish I had tickets to go again!
If you love Monty Python, this is a must see! Terrific music and humor!! #2, The Larch!
This show is a riot. It's fun if you are a Monty Python enthusiast and it is a hoot for those of us who love musical theater. Thanks for bringing this gem to SA.
The production was delightful in all aspects. Wonderful energy from the performers lit up the theatre. I would see the play again in a heart-beat. Thanks to all responsible for such great entertainment.
I've always been a fan of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, it was great seeing the stage adaptation. Music, staging and acting were top notch. I liked the attempt to keep it current by referencing today's culture, although I think the older audience would have enjoyed it either way. We laughed the whole way through. The diva song was by far my favorite.
The English Monty Python/Benny Hill style of humor never gets old. The cast made sure we enjoyed ourselves.
Wonderful! A lot of fun! Good voices and acting from the cast. Enjoyed costumes and sets were appropriate.
Old show doing re-run tour. Many empty seats. Had three extra tickets that I couldn't give away for free.
good number of laugh-out-loud moments, mixed with some sly "quick hits" of wit ... to complete left-turns in plot & structure. Really good time, audience seemed transfixed. There were a couple times (esp. chorus numbers) where the sound/lyrics seemed a bit muddy and indistinguishable ..but not an overall distraction. Enjoyed Abigail Raye as Lady of the Lake; powerful voice that they playfully acknowledge, and weave her part throughout the plot. Some other really fun parts as well played by Glenn Giron and Joe Beuerlein. Recommend it.
True to the movie. Makes fun of everyone so it can't offend anyone. Kids from 10-110 enjoyed it!
Spamalot was hysterical. The cast was absolutely amazing! Great energy from the cast and crowd. If you love Monty Python, then you must see Spamalot.
It's very funny and entertaining. the show is highly recommended.
The play was excellent. The cast very much enjoyed what they were doing. BUT waiting outside in the wind and cool temperatures in a long line was not expected. Seems the theater doors didn't open until about 1:45 for a 2:00 performance.
We had the greatest time laughing at all the characters and all the skits. The players seemed to be enjoying it as much as the audience. Wonderful!!
