MOGWAI IN CONCERT:

Scotland-based post-rock band Mogwai have been enchanting audiences for nearly 20 years with their ambient instrumentals and guitar-driven sound. At their mesmerizing live performances they play their down-tempo hits with precision and ease, vibing off each other beneath tranquil projected images that perfectly compliment their experimental sonic environments. Whether they’re playing new tracks from their 2014 release Rave Tapes or treating fans to old classics like “Auto Rock,” Mogwai are sure to leave fans awestruck on their upcoming world tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

School friends Stuart Braithwaite, Dominic Aitchison, and Martin Bulloch got together to form Mogwai in 1995, naming their band after the furry characters in the film Gremlins. The Scotland natives released their debut album Mogwai Young Team two years later, introducing listeners to their signature instrumental sound. Since then, the post-rock band has released eight studio albums including 2014's Rave Tapes, which peaked on the Scottish charts at No. 2 -- their highest charting album yet. Mogwai are constantly expanding their repertoire with new projects -- whether they're collaborating with Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol) or composing soundtrack music for the film Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, they never fail to present their music in a unique way. Mogwai won't disappoint as they share their hit-filled sets with eager fans on a string of upcoming tour dates.

Always the loudest, most clear sounding show I attend... Never unhappy when I leave and the whole time I feel like I am transported to another world.

    It's Mogwai.

by Price on 7/11/09Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

Mogwai has got to have one of the greatest live sounds I have ever heard. The albums sound amazing, but they are nothing compared to hearing the actual band play in front of you.

    Dead Meadow & Mogwai

by Taya on 7/11/09Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

I recommend seeing Dead Meadow standing up, Mogwai outdoors, and both bands somewhere louder. Actually, I don't recommend anybody seeing any band at the Orpheum, unless you get really good seats. But the performance itself was still pretty amazing.

    Mogwai at the Orpheum...

by NettieSpriggs on 7/11/09Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

Mogwai played an amazing set.... but in contrast to the San Francisco show, the venue seemed empty. The crowed seemed more into what people were wearing then how epic and amazing this band was. Not a single complaint about the music- sound quality and levels were close to perfect. But over all the LA show just lacked something that can only be found in the fog of San Francisco.... a seemingly more appropriate city for their music.

I will never miss a Mogwai show!

by CaptMcDeath on 7/11/09Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

This concert was amazing. The band sounded incredible, aside from some feedback issues early on. The Orpheum is a beautiful theater and a wonderful place to see a show. The crowd was attentive and respectful. All and all the show was just about perfect.

    Everyone needs to experience Mogwai

I saw them at the Orpheum and that theatre with them playing was insane. I was transported to another dimension. They don't mess around; they know their stuff.

    Mogwai was Awesome!

by Confucian on 7/11/09Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

Having never seen Mogwai and not even being that familiar with their songs, I went into the concert with a little apprehension. Boy, was I wrong. They blew me away. Their songs were very well-crafted, even though a lot of them did not have lyrics. Their sound was so raw and powerful, it gave me goosebumps. And they had great stage presence. You could tell they enjoyed playing with each other and have been for a long time. Overall, a great concert!

Dead Meadow at the Orpheum–Is Undead

by Doctord on 7/11/09Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

The voyage into psychedelic rock induced trauma started with a dose of Dead Meadow at the Orpheum Theater in the heart of downtown Los Angeles amidst skid row and rotting penny arcades from the turn of the century. Dead Meadow, while unknown in popular circles, is a D.C. based band that is already wrapping up their fourth studio album and touring with obscure acts like the famed cult rock band from Glasgow, Mogwai. The stage was projected with tie dyed lights, a trippy semblance of colors covering the undulating rhythms of Dead Meadow’s guitar crazed rock. Dead Meadow is lead by Jason Simon’s guitar and vocals through the mystic levels of rock n’ roll psychosis. The addition of Cory Shane on guitar enables the band to develop the sound of the Meadow further into abstraction, producing instrumentation that is on the cusp of experimentation. Driving the tractor for the band through the waves of blues inspired guitar slaying in the likeness of old Hendrix solos, is Stephen McCarty on drums. McCarty is the band’s second drummer. The original beat thumper, Mark Laughlin, left the band in 2002 opening up the Meadow for the pulse of MCarty, who wanders in and out of consciousness with the color of the music, maintaining a mechanistic time on his kit like the Bonham days of Zeppelin. Only McCarty revels in more of rhythmic entropy rather than the overpowered playing of Bonham. Fortunately for the band, McCarty loaned out his grand pappy’s farmhouse for them to record one of their more celebrated albums Howls From The Hills (Tolotta Records). In the album Howls From The Hills, and in the grasp of the hand painted dirt encrusted frescoes of the Orpheum, the billowing expanse of air was a catechism of misanthropic guitar rhythms and saturated bass lines from loyal bassist Steve Kile. The prominence of the bass is understated in the studio recordings, but within the walls of this theater the low frequency vibration was reverberating through the walls of the foundation. The lines brought continuity to the sound that carried the crowd through the diabolical riffs, and sent people’s minds into a state like an opium bender coated in blotter acid. Guiding the ears of the audience was Simon’s voice directing their attention into the psychedelic patterns of orange and red light on stage. The Meadow was inviting their listeners to experience the madness of soft death, illustrated by the inundated lyrics and fertile melodies that Dead Meadow as a band uncovers. Signs of distraction toward this purpose were absent, focused on their own cornucopia of wild surreal dreams; exploring Southern fields burned by a desire to reach into the essence of life. The music spanned the devastation and creation of the harvest cycle. If you haven’t had the opportunity to wander through a burned field of celebrated melodies and dissonant guitar rhythms, then I recommend you diligently acquire the newest release, Feathers, from this cult-creating circle of sedated psych-rock musicians.
