Miss Saigon on Tour

The latest touring production of Miss Saigon evolved out of West End and Broadway revivals celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Tony Award–winning musical's 1989 London debut. Arriving amid fevered conversations around the topic of immigration, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg's translation of Puccini's 1904 opera Madama Butterfly to the Vietnam War is timelier than ever. The French playwrights' extravagant "popera," conceived between their celebrated Les Misérables and Martin Guerre, has aged equally well on an artistic level. Director Laurence Connor brings realism and immediacy — and, of course, a scene-stealing helicopter — to this tense and tender tale of a Vietnamese mother who chooses to make the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of her son.

About Miss Saigon

Miss Saigon begins on April 29, 1975, the night before the United States essentially ends the Vietnam War by surrendering South Vietnam's capital city. The colorfully amoral pimp, fixer and survivor known as the Engineer (Red Concepción) sells the poor yet virtuous country girl Kim (Emily Bautista) to an American soldier (Anthony Festa), who is forced to abandon her after a night of passion. Three years later, Chris, now married, reunites with Kim and their child in Bangkok.

Reviewing the show's 1991 Broadway debut, New York Times critic Frank Rich lauded Miss Saigon's lush melodies and praised it as "a gripping entertainment of the old school (specifically, the Rodgers and Hammerstein East-meets-West school of South Pacific and The King and I)." With its revival, audiences can again swoon to gorgeous ballads like "You Will Not Touch Him" and "If You Want to Die in Bed," which reflect Kim's transformation from a naive victim of circumstance into a steely conduit of fearless maternal resolve. The musical's contemporary relevance later reaches its apex in "The American Dream," in which the Engineer fantasizes about the supersized life he will lead when he finally moves to America, where the Vietnam War's lessons are still being learned.

    Disappointed in this modernized version...

    by A. on 11/5/19Paramount Theatre - Seattle

I saw the original 20 years ago and loved it! This updated version didn't meet my expectations. To me, it seemed as if the focus of the show was on the Engineer, not on the love story that should have been developing. It was my wife's first time watching the show and she agreed. She was lost during the first act and couldn't figure out how the couple fell in love? It didn't add up to her. In the end, we decided that the the songs felt rushed, Sun and Moon, Solo Saxaphone... felt rushed and didn't allow for better development of the feelings through the music. Again, it felt as if the Engineer's songs were the focus. In fact, it seemed a lot trashier than the original, which again put more focus on the Engineer and his antics, not the tragic love story. In the end, I was disappointed, as well as my wife. We do love the music, but feel that the director really missed the point of the show and the timing was off.

    Disappointed

by Mig on 11/5/19Paramount Theatre - Seattle

I was looking forward to watching this musical as I had watched back in 1997. I noticed that most songs were shortened which was really disappointing. Performance by the cast was okay but nothing special. It was sad how they altered it from the original... they took a good thing and made it worse. Not worth it for the money I paid. I wish there was an option for 0 Star.

    Say what???

by Disappointed on 11/5/19Paramount Theatre - Seattle

We had seen Miss Saigon when it came to Seattle a couple of decades ago and loved it. This experience of Miss Saigon was so disappointing that we left at intermission. The primary issue was that neither we, nor anyone sitting around us, could understand what the cast was singing. The acoustics, or the mixing, or both were very bad; the lyrics were unintelligible. It wasn't until intermission when we heard other people around us buzzing about this that we realized it wasn't just us.

    Darn. I was disappointed

by JC on 11/4/19Paramount Theatre - Seattle

I was really looking forward this show. But … I wish they had spoken a few lines. They sang and shouted in sing-song with little inflection and I could hardly understand. And even with the singing, I didn't leave the theater thinking of even one song … nothing was really catchy. (maybe the Heat is On, but it was so early on). They tried, but didn't deliver. Was it this troupe? the direction? I don't know, It was okay, but I expected so much more, so it was disappointing. Well, at least the helicopter was cool, and the little kid was just amazing - the best part!

    Really disappointed

by Gabrielle on 11/4/19Paramount Theatre - Seattle

We have seen this show five times and have seen over 30 shows at the Paramount and were very excited to see this one come back to Seattle. The character, Chris, was a shaky singer who illicit no emotion from the audience. This is a show that is heart wrenching and emotional from the beginning. No one in our group and no one that we saw got emotional or felt the extreme sadness of the songs. Chris was removed and disconnected. There were a number of people who left at intermission. The entire ensemble was hard to understand throughout and if we had not been very familiar and known all of the words, we would not have been able to follow the plot. The people around us were lost and commented how hard it was to understand. The engineer was a strong singer but was again very hard to understand. Kim did a nice job but was really just okay. The new additions to the songs and story were not improvements. We were really unhappy that we took so much time and money to see this. Since we have seen so many, I guess we were due to have one that was not good. It was just sad because we love this musical so much. I am really glad my daughter didn't drive up from Oregon to see it with us after all.

Wonderful show. I did not like the fundraising at the end. Have signs and people in lobby area but don't put a downer on the show experience.

    What a dream come true

by Yehlilly on 11/1/19Paramount Theatre - Seattle

One of the best performances I’ve experienced. The theatre was small, but classic and cozy. Miss Saigon will always be my favorite musical of all. The casts are amazing in both singing and acting.

    Not the Best

    by J. on 10/2/19ASU Gammage - Tempe

Four of us saw the Sunday performance and sat in balcony row 6. All agreed that the lyrics were difficult to understand because the music was overpowering. We had to guess at the story line since there is no dialog other than the lyrics. The stage lighting was too dark. We could barely make out the set and the actor's faces. We were tempted to leave early. I had seen this play several years ago and remember enjoying it very much.

    I’ve seen better

    by S. on 10/2/19ASU Gammage - Tempe

I’m just not a fan of musicals that are way too much .. well, music! I really don’t recall any spoken scenes - the whole play was one long song. Unfortunately, it makes it hard to follow the story line (acoustic issues) and stay engaged in my opinion. There were some cool special effects and an unexpectedly sad ending that were noteworthy but otherwise, I’ll keep searching for my next fav.
