Minnesota Wild History

The state of Minnesota was without an NHL franchise for seven years after the 1993 departure of the North Stars. That void was filled when the city of Saint Paul landed the Wild as an expansion team in 2000. Hall of Famer Jacques Lemaire took over as the franchise's first head coach.

The Wild advanced to the Western Conference Final in 2003 behind the play of right wing Marián Gáborík, and has gone on to post a winning record in almost every season since. Starting with the 2012-2013 season, Minnesota reached the postseason six consecutive times.

Center Mikko Koivu spent his entire NHL career with the Wild and is the franchise's all-time leader in games played, points and assists. In 2022, the Wild retired Koivu's jersey, the first player in franchise history to have a jersey retired.

  • Minnesota 3 play

by Rdwd01 on 10/8/09Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

What a time to be in St. Paul MN on October 5th and 6th. First, the Vikings play Green Bay on Monday Night football, second, the Twins play Detroit in a tie breaker for a post season play off berth, and third, the Minnesota Wild play the Ducks in the home opener for the Wild. The Minneosta ENERGY started with the Vikings defeating the Packers, continuing to the Twins in a 12 inning win over Detroit and then to the Wild for a gritty never give up come from being down 0-3 to winning in OVERTIME 4-3!!

AMAZING opening night game! Incredible comeback in the third period. We beat the ducks in OT 4-3 :) GO WILD!!!!!!!!

  • Wild amazing comeback

by Viper198217 on 10/8/09Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Kind of a slow start by the Wild. They weren't playing well at all through two periods but three goals in the third followed by an OT game winner by Bruno made this a game to remember....especially if you were like me and had come straight from the dome after watching the twins win the division.

  • greatest comeback I've ever seen!

by wildfan78 on 10/7/09Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

While going into the third period and the Wild were down 3-0, I was almost ready to call it a loss. Then they come out in the third period and play some of the most aggresive Wild hockey I've ever witnessed, tie it up 3-3 and then take the win in OT. By far one of the best games yet for them.

  • Wild vs Anaheim-Home Opener 2009

by Ezma on 10/7/09Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Would have been much better if Twins were not playing for division champs. At least half of the fans were not in their seats, they were watching the baseball game instead. I was really disappointed in the behavior of those fans. I have been contemplating whether or not this affected the Wild as the 18,000 fans were not there for two periods to watch and cheer. The fans started to get into the game after the Wild scored their first goal, by the second goal the fans were the Team of 18,000 plus; this seemed to aide the Wild Players as well. Overall I thought it was a great experience and was so ecstatic that the Wild turned it completely around in the Third Period.

  • Wild Opener

Overpriced alcohol, smaller beer for a higher price, stop with the calendars. Poor opening to the start of the game, boring.

It was a slow first 2 periods. The Wild did not play well. The 3rd period was great. They came alive and started to play well !

The game was fun. I love to see the new guys play. The X ws amazing, as always. We were in the top row of the upper level and had no trouble seeing. Great venue! Great people! Great team! Great time! Can't wait to go back on Oct 30th!!!! The autograph session was well organized and went smoothly...posed pics would be nice tho! In sone cases I would rather have a pic than an autograph! No need for duplicate autographs! :)

  • PreSeason Family Pack

by KRJH on 9/25/09Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 3 out of 5

The PreSeason family pack of tickets which included a ticket to the game, hot dog, soda and chips was a good deal. The seats were NOSE BLEED!!! The entire arena had an enourmous amount of open seats. If you want to get people at the games.. do this ticket offer with LOWER LEVEL SEATING. Also the voucher for the food had specifc concessions to go to.. when we got to the one closest to our seats.. they knew NOTHING about it and we had to turn around and walk elsewhere. Wild games are really fun especially for kids.. more cheaper offers should be given throughout the year. The chamaraderie was way less.. not a lot of cheering, etc just very different than a regular season game. We may not choose a preseason game again.

  • Bud Valu Pak

by Shep019 on 9/24/09Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Being able to go to the game for as little as I paid was awesome. What made it even better was getting the tickets, 2 beers, 2 bags of peanuts, and passes to the autograph signing was great. With it being a preseason game, we were even able to sit at the Club Level. I will definitely recommend this to others and be looking for future deals!!

  • Wild vs. Blackhawks on 9/20 - best pre-season game

by wildfanman on 9/24/09Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

The new coach says the playing style is going to change - we noticed it right away at this pre-season game! Faster pace, more player enthusiasm(including the gloves coming off several times, with the Wild looking great in the fighting dept.), and our investment in the two new "BIG" names, Havlat and Sykora . looking to pay off big-time this year! Our team looks serious, and we are looking forward to the regular season with much enthusiasm(and some HOPE) this year!!

  • MN Wild Bud Pack and Autograph session

by cn7hockey on 9/23/09Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

The package was a great deal and an awesome experience. I took my son to a fabulous game and pregame party where he was able to meet and receive autographs from Wilds players. I felt like the best hockey mom in the world! Thanks to Craig Weller and Shane Hnidy for representing the MN Wild team and sharing your time with the fans.

  • The WILD Rock !

by Steinman on 9/22/09Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

It was a great pre-season game ! The new format for their play being implemented by their new Head Coach Richards is starting to take shape. The game was very fast paced. Wish I could get to more games !
