Minnesota Wild History

The state of Minnesota was without an NHL franchise for seven years after the 1993 departure of the North Stars. That void was filled when the city of Saint Paul landed the Wild as an expansion team in 2000. Hall of Famer Jacques Lemaire took over as the franchise's first head coach.

The Wild advanced to the Western Conference Final in 2003 behind the play of right wing Marián Gáborík, and has gone on to post a winning record in almost every season since. Starting with the 2012-2013 season, Minnesota reached the postseason six consecutive times.

Center Mikko Koivu spent his entire NHL career with the Wild and is the franchise's all-time leader in games played, points and assists. In 2022, the Wild retired Koivu's jersey, the first player in franchise history to have a jersey retired.

  • My first Wild game

by Aliyah62 on 12/27/09Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

I went to my first Wild game ever. I loved it. We sat at the Club level sec 29 row 2/ Great seats. I was a little nervous walking down the steps to my seat because I'm afraid of heights.. But once I was sitting I was fine.I loved the Club level.Very short or no lines to get a drink. Same with the bathroom. NOne of the other levels are allowed on our level so that made for the short lines.I love the atmospere of the club level. Its not crowded and a lot nicer then the lower level. With comfortable sitting areas and bar areas and a nice restaurant. The game was soooo fun. I love how they played great rock music through out the whole game.It was as loud as a concert.I liked how they always had something interesting going on. With the trivia games and contests and the videos on the score board.Crowd was enthusiastic and fun! Had a great time!

This is the second year that my grandson and I have gone to the game just before Christmas. The greatest thing to see is how he responds when we score Ipick him up and hold him while he claps and and yells. Liam is now 5 and we look forward to many more games. The game just before Christmas is now a tradition.

It pretty much doesn't matter what seats I get, I have never been dissapointed at a Wild game. I think the total price of a single game needs to come down a bit.

by Montanans on 12/6/09Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

This was our first time going to a pro hockey game. We were skeptical about our section 209 seats, but they were great! It was an experience we hope to try again someday.

by Sportslady612 on 12/5/09Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

We had a great night at the game. The Wild played very well and it was our first time watching a professional shoot out! Our seats were almost perfect. My husband had a little trouble seeing around the landing protection pole/glass, but otherwise it was a great night!

  • Awesomeness

by Buuba on 12/5/09Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Watching the Wild score 2 goals in the last 10 minutes of the 3rd period to come back and win was by far the best game I've been too. I got to see my first hockey fight, my first overtime period and first shootout all in the same game. Not only that, I was 3 rows behind the Minnesota Wild players bench! oh man was that a good time.

  • Great Game

by SRWild on 12/5/09Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

The best place to watch a hockey game! You can't beat the energy of a sold out Wild game.

  • Wild Beat Ducks in Shootout

by mortwild on 12/5/09Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Mikko Koivu, Antti Mietinen and Andrew Brunetter were absolutely awesome as the Wild rallied twice from 2 goal deficits, the second time with less than 5 minutes left in regulation, to beat the Ducks in a Shootout. Throw in a Paros-Boogaard punchfest, and the home crowd went home very pleased.
