Minnesota Wild History

The state of Minnesota was without an NHL franchise for seven years after the 1993 departure of the North Stars. That void was filled when the city of Saint Paul landed the Wild as an expansion team in 2000. Hall of Famer Jacques Lemaire took over as the franchise's first head coach.

The Wild advanced to the Western Conference Final in 2003 behind the play of right wing Marián Gáborík, and has gone on to post a winning record in almost every season since. Starting with the 2012-2013 season, Minnesota reached the postseason six consecutive times.

Center Mikko Koivu spent his entire NHL career with the Wild and is the franchise's all-time leader in games played, points and assists. In 2022, the Wild retired Koivu's jersey, the first player in franchise history to have a jersey retired.

Another great event -- includes seats, food, and site. Too bad the team played well enough to win -- but didn't. Have a couple of more of these coming up -- will look forward to them.

The venue was great, the view was awesome from our vantage point.

  • Huge win!!

Anytime you can beat the capitals it's huge. They still remain win less at the Xcel Energy Center, AWSOME! Good to see Chuck get a goal, the wild kept most of the play in the capitals zone and that's what it takes to beat them and keep winning. My son was happy to see his favorite team (the WILD) and his favorite player (Ovechkin) in the same night. Glad to see the wild players keep on Ovechkin and held him to one goal. GO WILD!!!

  • Excel Center Enjoyable

by TrueHockeyFan on 10/30/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Great seats, reasonably priced. Found reasonably priced food by walking around comparing prices. All center staff incredibly pleasant and helpful while not being "plastic". Game was slower than expected but still good. Sort of game where one team won 'cause the other team lost. Ovechkin stood off to the side too much and didn't bring his normal excitement with him.

  • SUPER FANTASTIC GAME!!!!

Backstrom is my favorite player for the Wild. It was great to watch him against the Capitals. Are team did a great job! Backstrom was the star player. Love to watch the Wild kick butt on Eastern teams. We had good seats and a good crowd around us. All in all it was a great night.!

Great atmosphere. Even if the Capitals didn't come out to play, it was a fun game.

The game was boring after the first ten minutes. The Wild looked very slow. It could be another long season !

  • Wild games - always a good time!

by WildFan2020 on 10/25/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

There's not a bad seat in the house. Wild games are my favorite!! We were up in section 211 and still had an excellent view. And, of course, it's always fun to watch MN crush the Canucks. :) The Koivu bobblehead was a little cheesy, but hey, it was free and my son loves it. All in all, a wonderful time, as usual.

  • one of the best wild games ever!

by HumanoidTyphoon on 10/22/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

6 different wild players scored in the first 2 peroids and in the 3rd when a vancouver player 'ripeen' got thrown out for fighting, he grabbed the ref then a fan from the stands. not very professional, but alot of fun to watch. if this is any indication of how the rest of the season is going to be like, it is going to be one exciting, punch in the face, adrenoline ride towards the stanley cup.

  • Great game

The game was great, the Wild rocked Vancouver like no one's buisness! Xcel is always a fun place to be. Besides the drunk patron trying to scream at the players through the glass a few sections over (he was THAT loud) the game was awesome. If you've never been to a Wild game...GO! You will enjoy it.

  • Wild were rockin!!

by motten on 10/21/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Good seats, GREAT Hockey by the MN Wild! And as an added bonus, got to see Rypien's last game for a while as he fought with a fan and got suspended. What a class act!

  • by Andrew1287 on 10/21/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

The game was better than I expected and we thoroughly enjoyed the seats we had. There isn't a bad seat at the Xcel Energy Center. We were at the end of the arena and could see the entire rink and were able to see all the action.

  • Wild were on fire

by slvrgrl on 10/18/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

What a home opener! It couldn't have been any better - the Wild players were hungry, skated hard - had beautiful plays and often make Edmonton look like they were standing still. 18,449 fans - great commentating, (though poor officiating). Wild got the short end of the stick, so to speak, on several calls. But a great game nonetheless. GO WILD!
