Minnesota Wild History

The state of Minnesota was without an NHL franchise for seven years after the 1993 departure of the North Stars. That void was filled when the city of Saint Paul landed the Wild as an expansion team in 2000. Hall of Famer Jacques Lemaire took over as the franchise's first head coach.

The Wild advanced to the Western Conference Final in 2003 behind the play of right wing Marián Gáborík, and has gone on to post a winning record in almost every season since. Starting with the 2012-2013 season, Minnesota reached the postseason six consecutive times.

Center Mikko Koivu spent his entire NHL career with the Wild and is the franchise's all-time leader in games played, points and assists. In 2022, the Wild retired Koivu's jersey, the first player in franchise history to have a jersey retired.

Almost got up and left in the thrid period, my wife convinced me to stay, and I'm glad I did. First period MN was up 3-1, second period we were tied, third they went up, we manage dto tie it up and scored with like 46 seconds left.

The game was amazing! It was a great game to be at and the Wild were behind and then took the lead in a power play!

  • Wild played crappy

The building and hockey atmosphere is great at the Excel Energy Center, but the team played horrible.

Went to the New Years Eve game. I go once a year and bring several friends. We saw about two minutes of decent play out of he 60 min played.

  • Hockey is Great

by Goalie2828 on 1/1/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

I had a great time at the game. It was really easy to get into the arena and was easy to get out of the arena as well. I did not have to pay for parking like I normally have to at other arenas which can be about 20 dollars or more. I have been to all but NHL hockey arenas. I would recommend that you get your tickets early so that you can get seats that you really want. I would have to say that it is a great atmosphere unless you are wearing the other teams jersey as they the drunk fans will harass you.

Our seats were in Section 213 but we didn't feel like we were missing anything. We had a great time and the crowd was awesome!

  • Wild were lame

by musky50 on 12/29/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 2 out of 5

Our annually family get togther, I spent a bundle on 4 tickets for a very poor performace by the Wild. It was so poor, that during the 2nd period someone vomited 4 seats down my row.

  • Wings WIN!!!

by BigCory on 12/29/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

This is the only time I get to see the Red Wings live, being a Wings fan in Wisconsin. Unlike the 2 games last season, I think the Wings/Wild fan ratio was pretty even this time. I have to ask one question. What is it about MN sports fans that think because their team is losing, that they have to leave early? Stick around and support your team, win or lose! The Wild's crowd had thined out considerably at the start of the 3rd, and by mid period, it was all wings fans in the house! I'll be back in Feb. to support my Wings.

  • Red Wings were great!

by Cince on 12/28/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

The game was great, we went to watch the Red Wings and were not disappointed. The Xcel Center is a great venue - it was easy to get in and out of - we would go again.

  • Hockey at it's best!

by Mackishop on 12/28/10Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

It was a very entertaining game by the Red Wings. A class of it's own. The Wilds were outplayed, but they are normally not this bad. But the Wings started hard and the Wilds could not keep up.
