Minnesota Wild History

The state of Minnesota was without an NHL franchise for seven years after the 1993 departure of the North Stars. That void was filled when the city of Saint Paul landed the Wild as an expansion team in 2000. Hall of Famer Jacques Lemaire took over as the franchise's first head coach.

The Wild advanced to the Western Conference Final in 2003 behind the play of right wing Marián Gáborík, and has gone on to post a winning record in almost every season since. Starting with the 2012-2013 season, Minnesota reached the postseason six consecutive times.

Center Mikko Koivu spent his entire NHL career with the Wild and is the franchise's all-time leader in games played, points and assists. In 2022, the Wild retired Koivu's jersey, the first player in franchise history to have a jersey retired.

Several friends and I went to this game and it was fantastic game. It started out a little slow for both teams, but the wild really picked up! It was one persons first time to a wild game and they did not disappoint

There is not a bad seats in the Xcel Energy. The seats were in the back row of the section but you can see all the action clearly. It was a great game to watch!

  • My two favorite teams

by ajoesq on 2/23/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

This was my second Wild game (the first was a couple days earlier, against Anaheim), and with my two favorite teams facing off against each other, I knew I was in for a good time. My seat was great, and the action was suspenseful. The fan energy was amazing. I look forward to attending many Wild games in the future!

The Excel Center is a great place to watch a game even if you are cheering for the visitors.

  • Awesome - game went into a shoot out!

by WIhockeyFans on 2/23/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

We are a family of 4; we have 2 boys, ages 8 & 12, one Minnesota Wild fan, one Detroit Red Wing fan. Awesome first NHL game to attend - especially for their birthdays! The atmosphere was awesome; way better than watching from your living room! Easy parking and getting back out on the road.

Although they lost, it was the best game that I have watched at Excel Energy.

  • Red Wings don't disappoint

by swatsp0p on 2/22/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Although low scoring, this was an exciting contest, with great play on both sides. OT and shootouts are always exciting and this was no exception.

It was a great time. Bertuzzi rocked the house and won the game in a shootout.

Great view of the game from our area. It was a great time watching Red Wing Todd Bertuzzi get his 1,000 NHL game!

  • Hockey at the Xcel Center is a good time, but not

by TMG84 on 2/22/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 3 out of 5

Hockey at the Xcel Center is a good time, but not economical. The Wild are not a good team, the Xcel Center is a nice venue, but someone has to pay for it and that someone is the ticket holders & tax payers of MN.

by WINGSFAN23 on 2/22/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed the Wild vs Wings game on Sunday. We were in the club level seating area. There was plenty of room as far as concessions and restroom facilities. The lines were very short.

  • Wild vs. Redwings

by Anonymous on 2/22/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

The good ole hockey game was fantastic again. It would be even better if they Wild would show up and play as well, but as a Red Wings fan, I always love to see a win. Everything about this experience (venue, parking, food, etc.) is top notch.
