Minnesota Wild History

The state of Minnesota was without an NHL franchise for seven years after the 1993 departure of the North Stars. That void was filled when the city of Saint Paul landed the Wild as an expansion team in 2000. Hall of Famer Jacques Lemaire took over as the franchise's first head coach.

The Wild advanced to the Western Conference Final in 2003 behind the play of right wing Marián Gáborík, and has gone on to post a winning record in almost every season since. Starting with the 2012-2013 season, Minnesota reached the postseason six consecutive times.

Center Mikko Koivu spent his entire NHL career with the Wild and is the franchise's all-time leader in games played, points and assists. In 2022, the Wild retired Koivu's jersey, the first player in franchise history to have a jersey retired.

  • Wild a no show

by unimpressedbythis on 3/28/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 1 out of 5

I have never been to a sporting event where a full refund was more appropriate than this one. The Wild played the most uninspired and lazy game of hockey imagineable. They were outshot, (47-16), out hit, and out hustled the entire game. Keep the game checks, call up the minor league club to finish out the season, and give me back my money! If you want to see some good hockey, get tickets to the frozen four and watch some kids play like they want to be there. Thank you for the opportunity to vent.

  • The Wild were awful

by Jess328 on 3/28/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 2 out of 5

I could not believe how the Wild played. They weren't playing as a team and they weren't really even playing. It was a very depressing game. I went for my birthday and I have to say that I was very disappointed with the team. I feel as though they gave up on themselves. I think the coach either needs to be replaced or he needs to go to a motivational speaking class because he isn't motivating the team to play better. I think even a fight would have rallied the team to get more than 16 shots on goal. It was really disappointing and disheartening to sit and watch them lose like they did.

  • WIld tamed

by mologic on 3/28/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 2 out of 5

A first wild game. The excitement was high. But after spending over $500.00 on tickets the professionalism of the players was lackluster and a downright boring sporting event. I like the Wild but I think they were thinking golf instead of fans.

SUCKED!!!! 16 shots on goal for an ENTIRE game? Come on! How are we sposed to win anything with a performance like that!!!! Total waste of good money!

  • Leafs shutout Wild

by PeteM on 3/25/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

It was a good game, although it appears that Minnesota has thrown in the towel for this season. There were a lot of scoring chances both ways, but the Leafs had better goaltending, which led to their 3-0 shutout of the Wild. Quite a few Leaf fans made the trip down from Canada to see the game.

The atmosphere, meeting up with friends and getting out during the week was great. It would have been even better if the Wild could have pulled off a win.

  • Red Energy

by VelvetDove on 3/24/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

When I heard the Canadiens were coming, I had to get tickets. They are my second favorite team. When we got the arena, it was amazing the amount of people who were wearing Canadiens jerseys. I think there were more people who came down to see the game than there were Wild fans. It definitely put an exciting feel to everything. They easily drown out any chant or yell from the Wild supporters. Which all in all the Canadiens are playing much better hockey than the Wild have been of late, but it still was an exciting game, regardless of the final score on the boards. The Wild were playing hard and so was Montreal. The whole arena was loud and insane with energy. It was great!

  • Excitement Until the End

by VelvetDove on 3/24/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

I took my cousins to see their first Wild game. Besides the general overall excitement of the arena, watching the game just left them literally at the edge of their seats. Since it was a close game the whole time, and ending in a sudden death over time, there was no way to not get caught up in the frenzy of energy that was going around the whole arena. It didnt even matter that we eventually ended up losing because it was such a great game. They definitely are going to come again. It's the perfect spot to take friends or family for an enjoyable evening.

  • Worst game I have ever attended

by MESShelby on 3/24/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 1 out of 5

Losing this game is not what made the evening so horrible. Perhaps it was just our section but it was embarrassing and frustrating to be sitting at "OUR POND" listening to "Maple Leaf" chants. We felt like outsiders in our own arena. There was little if any respect shown to our home town and although I consider myself an avid fan, I may not go back to a game again. I do not need that kind of anger in my life. It has been 2 days since the event and I am still livid.

  • Worst Wild defeat ever.

by PeteM on 3/24/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Montreal simply embarrassed Minnesota, winning 8-1. PK Subban also scored his first career hat trick. By the end of the game, there were more Habs jerseys than anything else in the arena.

  • Xcel and the Wild game stars

by HockeyGoalieDad on 3/22/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

The Wild and the Xcel Center know how to put on an event. We had a GREAT time

  • Wild were horrible but seats were GREAT!

by TinaBeaner on 3/22/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

The game was exciting and fun to watch - I loved the last row seats we had, we were on the barstools and could see everything and were only a few steps away from the beer concession (bonus!). Unfortunately the Wild sucked it up when it came to gameplay, but what can ya do?

  • Terrible Effort by the team

by MikeD24 on 3/22/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 2 out of 5

Venue was great as always. The defense played poorly and had no sense of urgency. It appears many of the players have given up on this season.

  • by Anonymous on 3/22/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 1 out of 5

The effort form the players was abysmal, we have been season ticket holders for 3 years now and have only left one game early, WE LEFT THIS GAME EARLY!!

  • Worst game EVER!

by MinnesotaSuperFan on 3/22/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 1 out of 5

I can't believe I wasted my time and money on that so called hockey game. They should've called skunk after the 7-0 drubbing. What happened to this team, I was embarrassed to be there. I did enjoy all of the Canadians' fans though, TRUE hockey fans.

This game was an absolute blast! It was the first NHL game I had ever been to, and it was a wonderful and exciting experience. Even though the Wild lost in overtime, I would highly recommend going to these games and following this team. Great Experience!!!!

It was an awesome game, even though the Wild lost!
