Minnesota Wild History

The state of Minnesota was without an NHL franchise for seven years after the 1993 departure of the North Stars. That void was filled when the city of Saint Paul landed the Wild as an expansion team in 2000. Hall of Famer Jacques Lemaire took over as the franchise's first head coach.

The Wild advanced to the Western Conference Final in 2003 behind the play of right wing Marián Gáborík, and has gone on to post a winning record in almost every season since. Starting with the 2012-2013 season, Minnesota reached the postseason six consecutive times.

Center Mikko Koivu spent his entire NHL career with the Wild and is the franchise's all-time leader in games played, points and assists. In 2022, the Wild retired Koivu's jersey, the first player in franchise history to have a jersey retired.

Minnesota fans were very polite and friendly. Although I am a Pittsburgh fan and native to Western Pennsylvania, everybody around my seats were friendly and willing to hold conversation with me. I'm not sure how old the arena is but it seems brand new.

The seats were in the 2nd deck and were great seats. We could see the puck 95% of the time and had a great time. Its a shame they lost to the redwings with only 48 seconds to go as I wanted to see my first shoutout.

I was seated in the lower level in section 121. I used to have season tickets in this section when the glass was seamless without stantions. The new glass is horrendous. after spending 2 and a half hours of watching the game through the new glass i left feeling nautious and a migrane headache. i don't know if the glass was warped or what but it felt like i was watching the game with a really bad pair of prescription glasses. and i don't wear glasses by the way. I friend that still has season tickets said that all the corner glass is like that and worse than in section 121. one of the ushers that i know well from my time as a season ticket holder told me that they've had many complaints about it and have actually had to relocate people from that area because it's so bad. so if you know there is a problem, maybe you should fix it,

I went to Xcel to see the Wings play the Wild on 10/15/11. I've been to Columbus, Detroit, and St. Louis to see the Wings play, and this arena is the nicest one I've been to so far. Everyone was very friendly and leaving at the end of the night was easy. My only complaint is how quiet everyone was.

  • Minnesota Has Some Terrible Hockey Fans

by Anonymous on 10/17/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 3 out of 5

The arena is great, parking plentiful, but unless you're cheering for the Wild (why would you, they're terrible) I'd skip seeing any hockey game here. The fans know little to nothing about hockey - they barely cheer on their own team! It is like watching hockey in a library. The musical cues are usually off or choppy, the majority of fans are loud, obnoxious, and uninformed. I couldn't wait for the game to end to get away from the screeching drunk fans of a team nobody but them cares about.

  • Wild season opener

by Sherkan on 10/11/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

It was our first hockey game in Minneapolis/NHL and we just loved it. The arena is great, the crowd was good and the game was awesome. Hope the Wild will be offensive as they were in this first game. Definitely not a cheap evening out if you add the tickets, the drinks, the food ! Would be expensive to do that every week and sometimes twice a week !

  • Wild opener delivered as promised!

by MNlady4WILD on 10/10/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

The game was great! The top line is living up to the hype, the second line is right behind them, young Dmen are for real, and Backstrom is back! A few glitches, but give them a few games to polish this diamond-in-the-rough. Memorial ceremony was moving. Only hitch was AT&T wifi: love that it's finally freely available, but I'm an AT&T customer and I couldn't stay connected and I could never reconnect on first try.

  • Great Wild game.
