Minnesota Wild History

The state of Minnesota was without an NHL franchise for seven years after the 1993 departure of the North Stars. That void was filled when the city of Saint Paul landed the Wild as an expansion team in 2000. Hall of Famer Jacques Lemaire took over as the franchise's first head coach.

The Wild advanced to the Western Conference Final in 2003 behind the play of right wing Marián Gáborík, and has gone on to post a winning record in almost every season since. Starting with the 2012-2013 season, Minnesota reached the postseason six consecutive times.

Center Mikko Koivu spent his entire NHL career with the Wild and is the franchise's all-time leader in games played, points and assists. In 2022, the Wild retired Koivu's jersey, the first player in franchise history to have a jersey retired.

  • Great cheap seats!

For some of the cheapest seats at Excel, I thought they were great! We could see all the action. It was a little harder when they were at the other end, but very exciting when they were right below us!

It was the bomb first game for my 5 year old! He was so excited, he kept waving at the players!

That was my very first hockey game that I've ever been to and I loved it! I was at the edge of my seat the entire time during the game. I loved the fighting and how almost half of both teams where in the penatly box. That part was crazy. I never really like sports or watch them. But I think I'm a big wild fan now.

  • Great Game, Great Start, Go Wild!

by granarygear on 11/7/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Up until this year I have been a season ticket holder, but had to drop-out based on some economic conditions. The Wild look as good or better than they have since their arrival in St. Paul. My own story is a sign of the times, but I was disappointed to see that there were less than 17,000 people at the event. This is the land of 18,000! If you get a chance to support the Wild take it! They are looking great!

  • The Wild killed!!! Better seats available though.

by Puffmeister on 11/6/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

The Xcel NRG Center was very accommodating. Our seats (Sec. 101) were an aisle's walk up the stairs and out of the building... very convenient. On Row 9, however, there is an obstructed view of the play down ice, especially when it was close to the boards. This was due to the fact that we were down so low to the glass that it distorted the view. You could see the goal alright I suppose, but I always looked forward to those moments when all the crowd would rise, just so I could see farther down the ice. Don't get me wrong, it was amazing to see the Sedins and Kessler and company up close and personal for two periods... it almost felt like you were on the ice with them. But personally, I preferred the view of our tickets last time (Row 17) to these close-to-the-glass seats.

  • Game lacked offense, but Excel is great

by Hankx4211 on 10/31/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Recently attended the Wings-Wild game at the Excel Center. We sat in section 222 Row 2. The thing I really like about the Excel center, is that even though we were in the upper section, you can still hear the action on the ice and the sight lines are terrific. I've been to hockey arenas all over the country and Canada, and the Excel Center really is one of the best there is.

  • Excellent Wild Game - Down Go the Wings!

We had a great time at the game. After coming up from Rochester and spending a day at the MOA for my wife's birthday, the Wild game was a great way to cap off a special day!

I am a big Pittsburgh Penguins fan and I was able to purchase tickets in the 2nd row just 2 days before the game. I was so happy. The seats were unbelievable and the game was fun. It was kind of a close game.

  • Nothing like live NHL hockey

by Heinz37chevy on 10/20/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Great facility and great game night atmosphere. Great use of video and sound in the arena. Knowledgable fans.

  • Low quality product for an expensive price

by Anonymous on 10/20/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 1 out of 5

As a huge Penguins fan since the age of 8, I expected to see my favorite players at The X. They only play in Minnesota once every two years so I shelled out for $200 tickets even though I'm currently unemployed. Five of their top 6 players didn't play. There needs to be some sort of policy about this so that consumers aren't stuck with low quality products like what I endured Tuesday night.

  • First Wild Game

by Randy2011 on 10/20/11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

This was a father and son wild game. It was out first pro sport live events and we lived here in Minnesota for more than ten years. It is worth everything and I think the wild have one of the best fans and arena in the league. I love every moment of the game even though the wild can not get a "W' it was a good game.
