About

Minnesota Timberwolves History

The Timberwolves joined the NBA in the 1989 expansion that also brought the Orlando Magic into the league. The Wolves struggled during their first seven seasons, but the arrivals of first-round draft pick Kevin Garnett, general manager Kevin McHale and head coach Flip Saunders signaled a turnaround. The franchise earned its first playoff berth in the 1996–97 season — the first of eight straight years in the postseason — and its first winning record a year later.

In the 1999–00 season, led by Garnett and rookie Wally Szczerbiak, the Timberwolves posted their first 50-win season, the first of three straight years they reached that milestone. But it was not until the last year in that streak that they advanced past the first round of the playoffs.

With guards Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell joining the Timberwolves for the 2003–04 season, the team won their first division title and first two postseason series, eliminating the Denver Nuggets and the Sacramento Kings. They ultimately fell to the Los Angeles Lakers in the conference finals.

After Garnett was traded away in 2007, the team rebuilt around all-star Kevin Love, but failed to make the playoffs during his tenure in Minnesota. They ended a 13-year drought without a playoff appearance by finishing 47-35 in the 2017–18 season, good for second place in the Northwest Division.

The last round of upgrades were unveiled at the outset of the 2017–18 season, with a newer exterior and a three-story atrium over a new entrance, home to the iconic statue of George Mikan.

    Kobe set another milestone!

by KB08 on 12/17/14Target Center Minneapolis - Minneapolis

The game was between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Los Angelos Lakers. I have been a Laker fan forever but I am now Timberwolve season ticket holder. I had to go to this game to watch my two favorite teams. Both teams are having some rebulding issues but the game was still fun to watch. The Lakers ended up winning but the youth of the Timberwolves shows some promise. They kept it close until the very end and it was exciting. My kids love the venue and they always have a great time at the Target Center.

It was an amazing game. I witness a part of NBA history as Kobe passed MJ on the all time scoring list. This will rank as one of the greatest event of my life. I am a big Kobe/Lakers fan and it was great to witness first hand.

    GREAT EXPERIENCE!!

by mt1percenter on 12/8/14Target Center Minneapolis - Minneapolis

being from Montana we dont get to many professional events, my 13 yr old son and i went together and he has told me it was one of the funnest times he has ever had....PRICELESS!!, I really liked the fact that the venue filled all time, with dancers, half time show, and all the antics during time-outs, the only thing that sucked was the T-WOLVES lost. GREAT EXPERIENCE!!

    Youth Movement Excitement

by Glassk1tchen on 11/30/14Target Center Minneapolis - Minneapolis

Great game pitting the No. 1 and No. 2 overall picks from the 2014 Draft against each other. Overall, four teenagers saw significant game action and five first round picks from the past two seasons participated. The Wolves gave a good effort but lacked the personnel to contend in the end.

It was a great game and the seats were just great. I have never sat that close to the court. I only disappointing thing about the event was did not get to see the cheerleaders as much as I thought they would be out there.

Twolves Bulls great game bad ending

by JimTy on 11/6/14Target Center Minneapolis - Minneapolis

Good game, but they lost. Obstructed view seats, which would have been ok as it was just the stair railing, but the problem was people stopping on the landing to watch the game, blocking the view. The ushers need to do a better job of keeping people from standing there.

The game was fun. Ticket prices were expensive, as the food, which is expected. The entertainment was less than par, but I really enjoyed the game.

Game as good - Vanilla Ice was fun and entertaining, The girl dancers are annoying and do not provide any source of entertainment or help with getting the crowd fired up. The men basketball ball shooters/jumpers were amazing and it is always fun to watch. Crunch is always fun too and a good crowd pleaser.

T-wolves and Bucks rock the US Cellular Center!!!

by Iowateach on 10/21/14U.S. Cellular Center - Cedar Rapids

What a great experience! We had such a fantastic time! Wish the NBA would come to Cedar Rapids more often! It was nice to see a sell out crowd too. The entertainment just kept coming in between quarters and during time-outs. It was an exciting game that came down to the last few seconds! We're sooooooo glad that we decided to go! Loved everything about it! :)
