Michael Kiwanuka on Tour

Michael Kiwanuka first graced the stage as a solo artist in London at just 22 years old. His smooth, soulful voice quickly won over crowds. Next, with just two EPs under his belt, he found himself supporting Adele on her 2011 world tour and landing slots at festivals around the UK. After releasing his 2012 debut album, Home Again, the singer-songwriter headed off on an extensive world tour that would include performances at Lollapalooza, Glastonbury and other major festivals around the world. Since, he released his second album, Love & Hate, and has spent much of his time on the road. With only a brief break in 2018, Kiwanuka returned to stages across Europe and the U.S. in 2019.

Michael Kiwanuka in Concert

Michael Kiwanuka gives the warm, comforting sound of classic folk, rock and soul a melancholic modern twist — and makes it all feel timeless. The English singer-songwriter, born to Ugandan parents, grew up in London surrounded by music. He listened to Nirvana and Blur, but became most inspired by Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and Otis Redding. He played in rock bands as a teenager, studied jazz at the Royal Academy of Music and pop at Westminster University. He started making connections in the local music scene, and eventually worked as a session guitarist for English rapper Chipmunk and former Bill Withers drummer James Gadson. Behind the scenes he was working on his own material, writing songs with just an acoustic guitar and recording a few demos. He began playing some small shows, and got the attention of Paul Butler, the frontman of indie rock group The Bees, who offered to produce his first EP. Soon enough, Kiwanuka got signed to independent label Communion Records, which released his debut EP, Tell Me a Tale, and follow-up I'm Getting Ready EP in 2011. From there, Kiwanuka's career went into overdrive. He signed to Polydor Records, toured alongside Adele and was named BBC's Sound of 2012 winner, all as he prepared for the release of his 2012 debut album, Home Again. The album peaked at No. 4 in the UK and No. 86 in the U.S. After a whirlwind world tour, Kiwanuka finally released his 2016 follow-up, Love & Hate, coproduced by Butler and Danger Mouse. The album debuted at No. 1 in the UK and featured hit singles "Cold Little Heart" (which eventually became the opening theme for the HBO series Big Little Lies) and the title track. After another few years, he returned with the disco-infused single "Money," a collaboration with Tom Misch.

Wanted to love this show, but alas I did not.

by Anonymous on 7/5/17The Fillmore - San Francisco

Michael Kiwanuka is a mesmerizing performer - without his band. If this was a solo performance, just him and his guitar, I think I would have loved it. The two songs he performed solo were incredible. However, the majority of the songs, playing with the band, just didn't quite come together for me.

More than just a theme song

by ressap on 6/10/17Deluxe at Old National Centre - Indianapolis

I "discovered" Michael Kiwanuka while surfing around on YouTube & was instantly hooked. When I saw that he was coming to Indy, I immediately bought a ticket, wanting the experience of hearing his voice & guitar playing up close & he did not disappoint! The show was fabulous, his set just long enough to give you your money's worth but leave you wanting more. Most in the crowd knew him only from his songs being used in a popular tv show & movie, but quickly learned this dude has so much more. Venue was perfect for this type of artist.

    Amazing

by Chriskat3 on 4/7/16Bowery Ballroom - New York

Michael Kiwanuka is an old soul with a beautiful voice. It's unbelievable how he's not more popular here in the states. He's a genuine and down to earth kind of guy, constantly thanking the crowd for their support. I would definitely see him again and cannot wait for his new album to drop next month.

wonderful experience...great crowd...black, white, yellow, brown...all hungering for a great musical experience...no drunken chicks pushing their way to the front...no loud inane "right, ya know, like" conversations...New York loved Michael and he loved us right back...a night I will never forget...live music is my the only religion...want to join my church?

    Infectious, driving grooves

by Leadguitar on 4/6/16Rough Trade NYC - Brooklyn

I always think that it is very considerate of artists when trying out new material that they also treat us to some of the songs who have made them from their past. Especially when it is an artist who doesn't come around that often. Kiwanuka didn't disappoint at all. His new material was really great and I can't wait to hear the new album when it comes out (soon, I hope). I really loved hearing Tell Me A Tale and I'm Getting Ready, and there was no denying the power in his delivery of Black Man! But with all that said, his new song The Final Frame was the highlight of the show, which (I hope) means he is far from done with writing great music!!! Just an overall great performer who has really come into his own. Don't miss him if you get the chance to see him live, because to me, he's one of those performers who brings something to a live show that his albums aren't able to capture. Stellar show, stellar performance.

Wow. So effortlessly charismatic, soulful and powerful voice. Mellow yet so moving. And the outdoor, intimate setting at the Ford Amphitheater was absolutely perfect. Beautiful Southern California evening. And a big shout out to my man Jeremy Sole for bringing this wonderful crooner to the venue. Yay KCRW!

    Privileged

by Yets on 9/28/12Webster Hall - New York

I knew I was in store for a good show when Foy Vance was the opener. I've been waiting five years to see him and felt nothing but privileged to be at this whole show. Foy's voice is so rich and deep that it gave me goose bumps. He was a perfect fit to open for Michael. Marcus Foster was the second opener but I will be honest, I did not like him at all. Michael Kiwanuka has a sweet way about him. His voice, his manner and his music. He played straight through without talking too much, but I think he was nervous. His bad was also quite incredible. They meshed well together and played as if they were one musician. It was a pleasure to watch. It was amazing to be so close to see all their musicianship. It was a great show, filled with great music. I just can't wait until he has another album out so it could be a longer show.

    Lovely Night

by HugoHam on 9/25/12Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Michael Kiwanuka sings straight from the heart. So much soul , warmth and honesty. I've always regretted not being alive when the great soul legends were in their prime, but Michael may be our Otis or Marvin.

    What I've been waiting for!!

by Puregem23 on 9/23/12Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

I've been waiting for a good show for months and the tip off for Michael K and his band came out of nowhere! This guy put on a great show and seeing him play at an intimate venue like the Williamsburg Hall of Music was perfect. I was almost moved to tears by the expression of rock and roll soul, and it was a joy to watch him and his fantastic band enjoy themselves on stage. Best $23 I've spent in a while - can't wait until Michael and his band come back!!

    Superstar in the making

by JGhostC on 9/20/12Webster Hall - New York

I don't think I have ever been as excited for a young artists career as I am for Michael's. His voice is even better live than it is on the album. I am looking forward to years of unique, innovative, soulful and funky music from Michael.

    Just Magical!

by theunderstudy on 6/20/12Brighton Music Hall - Boston

Michael Kiwanuka totally blew me away. His album is good. Really Solid. But LIVE he is truly a phenomenon. He is not so much a showman, but the purity of his voice and the rawness and tenderness of his presence was quite something to behold. Also the band, and in particular the rhythm section was tight and grooving and overflowing with great energy.

Michael Kiwanuka at Brighton Music Hall

by bostonirishgal on 6/20/12Brighton Music Hall - Boston

This was hands down, the best show that I've been to in years. I was completely blown away by how truly talented this young man is. His voice is incredible, what a sound. All I could think of was, "A young Otis Redding"...soulful, bluesy tunes... Coupled with his band, who also rocks...just an awesome night of music. Perfect. I've been raving to all of my friends and family. This morning I played his album for a friend and his 3 day old baby...we all loved it...including the baby! :)
