    The SMOOTHEST Man In Jazz!!!

by Julie on 11/8/22Fisher Theatre - Detroit

Michael Franks sounded the same as he did 40 years ago! He put on an amazing show and the audience sang along to all of our favorites. He could have performed all night. The band was wonderful too. This was the perfect CHILL night!

    Disruptive crowd

by Routy Detroit on 11/8/22Fisher Theatre - Detroit

Too many outbursts from crowd. Interruptions with shouts to sing St. Elmos Fire, One Bad Habit, etc. while he tried to share his thoughts was annoying. He was fantastic. Probably fare better in a smaller intimate venue. His band FANTASTIC!

Fabulous concert at Fisher Theatre in Detroit

by Rhonda S on 11/8/22Fisher Theatre - Detroit

I love seeing Michael Franks whenever I hear he is going to do a concert. He does not perform very often but when he does I make sure I get on a plane to hear him soothe the audience with his wonderful melodies. I recommend anyone who loves smooth jazz and to be swept away for an evening of enchantment to catch one of his shows.

    Amazing Concert

    by LPerry9649 on 11/8/22Fisher Theatre - Detroit

This was my first time seeing Michael Franks and Najee, let me say this was an amazing concert. Najee and his band were playing like I’ve never heard before. Then Michael Franks and his band came out. This was his first tour since pre-Covid. He didn’t miss a beat. I was brought back to memory lane as I sang, clapped and just enjoyed the tunes of Michael Franks. If you haven’t seen him, make sure you do!

    Incredible Voice

by Icewoz on 11/8/22Fisher Theatre - Detroit

Michael's voice was in top-notch shape, however, the flow and line-up of the songs left a lot to be desired. I believe Detroit was there first date on this tour, however, there didn't seem to be a playlist or leader of what was going to happen next. I felt there were too many solo parts by the band. I paid money to see Michael Franks, his band is secondary. He has so many songs that were left out because there were too many solos. Also, Michael didn't seem to have control of the show or know what was going to happen next which made it confusing to watch. Overall, the band and Michael were excellent, but at these ticket prices, the artist should have a game plan before they step on the stage.

I truly enjoyed the Michael Franks concert. It has been years since I’ve since him… The Fisher Theater was the best place to enjoy the show.

    Everything must change..

    by M1 on 11/8/22Fisher Theatre - Detroit

Fisher upper balcony seats suck! had two larger than usual patrons on either side of me, the seats are too small!, the acoustics were good. Both bands were fantastic just like the record and better. Najee was great, Michael Franks singer was ok , she was off key while singing Tell me all about it, she was interesting.... Mr. Franks was maybe singing along with his songs? This was my first time seeing him, I knew I wasn't going to hear everything I wanted to due to the enormity of his catalogue. It was enjoyable overall.

Windy night! Jazz blew in the D

by GINGER on 11/8/22Fisher Theatre - Detroit

Fabulous from the start to finish. Najee and his band and lead singer were superb. Michael Franks took us all down memory lane with all his classic song when sly calls. The beautiful fisher theater just a awesome time.

    Michael Franks was outstanding.

    by E. H. on 11/6/22

Detroiters showed their appreciation for a great performance at the Fisher Theater. It was MF’s 1st performance since the pandemic and you could feel the joy as he once again shared his music. The Najee opening was a great warm up..

He was terrific! Best seat I've had in a long time!! Easy in

by A. on 11/21/19New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

Had great seat and acoustics for Franks/Spyro Gyra were excellent! The groups have certainly mellowed with age, like a fine wine! Want more shows like this PLEASE!!!!!

    Michael Franks

by JW56 on 11/19/19New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

Great performance by Michael Franks. Unfortunately each of the 3 main acts that evening (besides MF, Spyro Gyra and Steps Ahead) only got 40 minutes on stage, which is too short. The audience, including us, was expecting a much longer performance. We came all the way from The Netherlands to Newark to see MF perform and then 40 minutes is a real disappointment. Otherwise, great venue, great show.

    A great night overall

by Radman on 11/18/19New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

The performances of Spyro Gyra and Steps Ahead were both totally moving. They were virtuoso performances. Both of those groups brought back so many memories of music past. To think of all of the years that they have been working together making amazing music. However, Michael Franks was an unfortunate letdown. There were constant issues with his sound and the words were routinely drowned out or unintelligible. I knew the least about him and left unimpressed. I would go back and hear Spyro Gyra or Steps Ahead any day.

    Good Show

by MF Superfan on 11/18/19New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

I've seen Michael Franks many, many times - he's been my favorite musical artist since the first time I heard 'The Art of Tea' (1976). This short show (45 minutes) was good, not great. Headset problems seemed to throw him off his game at the start of the show and affected his vocals. Twenty minutes in he regained his footing. His voice is still remarkable. Solid setlist, capable band although not having his usual band leader Charles Blenzig on keyboards was a disappointment. Veronica Nunn was in fine form (after dealing with her own headset issues). Wished he played one song ("To Spend the Day With You") from his incredible 2018 album 'The Music in My Head' - if you don't own it, buy it. All that said, I never miss him live within a 5-hour drive from my home in the DC suburbs (shoutout to his always great shows at the Birchmere!). As gifted a musical artist there is, glad he is still out there bringing joy to his fans at 75 years young.

    Michael Franks - Eh!

by Balloon Guy on 11/18/19New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

I had never seen Michael Franks live but have been a fan for almost 40 years. I have to say I was disappointed by the performance. Harmonies and voice doublings with female vocalist seemed off-key at times. Sax/woodwind player did a nice job. Certainly a very good band. Vocals did not stand out (perhaps a sound tech's problem) so it was hard to hear Mr. Franks, who's style has alwasy been very soft and mellow. But just overall not impressed. Yes, Michael Franks is a low key guy and low key in his singing style but just way too laid back as an overall performance. Spyro Gyra did well enough. Best band of the night BY FAR was Steps Ahead. All great playing, unusual tunes and some familiar ones. An extra treat was seeing Steve Smith playing drums. BUT - this seemed like a Michael Franks event. His band (though again, I was not impressed) should have gone on last. So many people left after his set it was almost embarrassing to see and not great for Steps Ahead to come out to with almost half the audience having left before they played a single note. I even heard a few people behind us arguing whether the concert was over after the Franks set. Did they read their program? Did they actually pay attention to the tickets when they purchased them?? Mike Manieri - 8 stars, Spyro Gyra - 4 stars, Michael Franks - 2 stars, sorry to say. Also, every band mentioned the time constraints (40 minutes) as a real hindrance to what they would and were playing. Could have and should have been a better night overall.

The sound system did not seem to working correctly

by S. L. on 11/18/19New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

The following items seemed to be at issue during this concert: The sound system did not seeming to be working The many latecomers were seated during the concert which was a distraction as were the many people that were using their cell phones to record the concert. The ushers began telling people to stop, but it was too little and too late.

    Odd Evening

by Scott on 11/18/19New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

Staff seated the five of us in the wrong area, even after I questioned her. After fifteen minutes we were asked to go to the correct seats (when the other people arrived). Spirogyra played five or six songs, I was surprised I recognized most of them, very entertaining. Next to perform was Michael Franks, microphone was not functioning properly and we could not hear about one third of the words he sang. Otherwise the crowd seemed to be very pleased with the performance thus far. Oddly, the people seated behind us were talking and laughing loudly throughout the concert. The final band to perform was Steps Ahead, I assumed they were the main attraction. Steps Ahead is one of my favorite bands and me and my family were very much looking forward to seeing one of the best vibraphone players in the world, Mike Mainieri perform live for the first time. As soon as Steps Ahead started to perform about one quarter of the crowd left the building. After they played the first song, there was less than half the crowd. Similar problems with sound equipment by the way, I noticed no sound or muted sound coming from two band members on numerous occasions. Steps Ahead only played about four songs and I gather was told to stop performing. After the show, I heard one of the Steps Ahead members say they were supposed to play at least two more songs. Needless to say me and my group of five were not happy! Very disappointed with sound quality and Steps Ahead shortened session.

    Everyone was old

by DrB on 11/18/19New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

Franks voice was weak, Beckenstein was the first act and the other band members drowned out his sax on many riffs, Steps Ahead was a shell of its original members
