About

Metallica was formed by drummer Lars Ulrich and singer/guitarist James Hetfield in Los Angeles in 1981; since then, their astonishing career milestones include winning eight Grammys and selling over 125 million albums worldwide, including the critically-acclaimed Master of Puppets (1986), often cited as one of the most important metal albums in history. They are also one of the most popular and commercially successful touring acts in history — according to Pollstar, as of 2019 Metallica had sold over 22 million tickets and grossed $1.4 billion in touring since 1982. Metallica’s fifth studio album, Metallica (1991), famously known as The Black Album, has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and features some of the band’s biggest hits: “Nothing Else Matters,” “The Unforgiven” and “Enter Sandman.” On six consecutive genre-defining studio albums (from 1991’s Metallica through 2016’s Hardwired… to Self-Destruct), Metallica has consistently debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. In support of their 2023 album 72 Seasons, Metallica’s M72 World Tour will see the band playing two nights in every city they visit throughout 2023-24.

    Deafening for Charity!!

by Schnise on 9/14/09Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium At Marin Center - San Rafael

What a great venue to see the Boys in Black perform. The music was superbly performed and the sound was loud and ass kicking. It took a while to regain my clear hearing after the show. What a great way to support Marin Rocks. Thanks, Metallica!

    Benefit Rocked the house!!

by her63 on 9/14/09Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium At Marin Center - San Rafael

A Metallica typical fashion, these guys blew the house away with their love for the fans and the Marin center. They rocked out as they always do. I flew from Houston, TX to San Rafael, CA to see these guys and they did not dissapoint me. The venue was about 1000 packed house and it was great since it felt like a smaller intimiate metallica fan concert which helped raise money for the Marin Veteran center. Highly recommend seeing these guys in which ever city you live in. This was Metallica's backyard and they really appreciated being called upon to raise money for the venue, which I am certain they accomplished their mission... Rock on Metallica fans \m/

    Marin 9-11-09 show was SPECTACULAR!

by BibbleEye on 9/14/09Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium At Marin Center - San Rafael

This was the most fantastic show I've ever seen by Metallica. In fact, the best concert I've ever been to. The theatre was built for acoustics and Metallica sounded flawless, no distortion or echo either. They came out swinging with Creeping Death as their opener, and it never stopped. Thanks for such a great intimate show. Being so up close and personal was the way to really enjoy Metallica. This was once in a lifetime experience, was worth every penny of it, especially since all the proceeds are going to the local museum! I really really hope they make a video of this concert available on DVD like they did for S&M.

    16th Birthday Suprise!

by snyd on 9/14/09Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium At Marin Center - San Rafael

I bought tickets for my husband, Nephew and my 16 year old son. They could not stop talking about the concert. They will be talking about this past weekend for years to come. I hope you will let the guys in the band know how much they appreciate the time and effort that went into making that show amazing. Thanks Metallica!

    Metallica ROCKS!

by Zeus4 on 9/14/09Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium At Marin Center - San Rafael

AWESOME!!!! More proof positive that Metallica is one of the best bands EVER! Great tiny venue to see them at. Great to see them support a local effort to get kids involved in music. I've always been a big fan since back in the day, but I have even more love and respect for them now. See them whenever you get a chance!

All I can say is WOW!

by Bpatter49 on 9/14/09Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium At Marin Center - San Rafael

This concert was amazing. Metallica was having a blast, and the small crowd was really into it. The sound and lighting were spot on, and I don't think it could get any better than it was. They played for two hours, and I think they could've played for two more hours. The only negative I had was the opening band. Not that they were bad, but they just didn't really do a good job of leading into Metallica. The band would have been more appropriate for someone like the Grateful Dead.

    Once in a lifetime experience!

by Metfan1969 on 9/14/09Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium At Marin Center - San Rafael

I have seen Metallica three times in the last 13 months. Been a fan for many years. The outdoor concert at Marlay Park in Dublin, Ireland was definitely a great venue, but seeing them perform in their hometown in a 2,000 seat arena is unforgettable! It was the equivalent of seeing a band in a high school auditorium only the band was Metallica!! The greatest band and greatest concert venue I have ever seen.

by CJTutu on 9/13/09Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium At Marin Center - San Rafael

What a great night for Marin County, the Marin History Museum and the fans in the house! It was a great concert and it was wonderful to see them in their home county. We are not sure who was happier - the fans or the band. Metallica rocked the house - great concert. Thank you James, Kirk, Lars and Robert.

    Metallica are "Gods of Rock"

by MetalMick69 on 9/12/09Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium At Marin Center - San Rafael

I've been a fan of these "Gods" for years and this was the first time to see them in a full concert. I did see them a couple of years ago at the Shoreline where they played acoustic and, of course, sounded fantastic. But what can I say to justify the experience of listening and watching "Gods" play their guitars and drum kit? True, it was awesome, fantastic, incredible, brilliant, breathtaking, mind-blowing, heart-pounding, ear drum-shattering, captivating, and really the most unforgettable experience that I have ever had at a live concert. Only true "Gods" could play so amazing and be so precise with their guitars and drums. I took lots of photos and I have many memories of this great event that will stay with me forever. Thank you Metallica for all your music and energy you put into your concerts. I look forward to seeing you again in San Jose in December. Until then, continue to inspire and amaze your fans like you have for the past 28 years. My only wish now is to stop my ear drums ringing!

    Best Metallica Concert Ever!

by SharkKQ on 9/12/09Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium At Marin Center - San Rafael

Combine a small venue (~2000 people) with Metallica, one of the best rock band of all time, finally playing in their own backyard (Marin) and what do you get? Best Metallica Concert.... Ever! The band was high energy and they really looked like they were enjoying themselves. Add to that the fact that this was a benefit concert for Marin Rocks, giving back to the rock community. I hope that they are able to come back and play more small venues like this own.

    Let's party like it's 1991

by DB4561 on 9/12/09Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium At Marin Center - San Rafael

"Hats off" to the boys in Metallica. Thanks for a great show. We local guys like myself were really glad to see them play such a smaller local venue and for a good cause. I title my review this way because I was wearing my black tee (which is still in almost pristine condition) from the 1991 Black album tour. Some of the songs (e.g. "Enter Sandman") were suprisingly smoking versions on songs you wouldn't necessarily expect. Also they played a VERY hot version of "Battery" which was awesome. Hottest songs of the night: The aforementioned "Enter Sandman" and "Battery", also "One" and "Seek and Destroy" and "Nothing Else Matters". Downside: Wish there had been more songs from Load and Reload, especially "Bleeding Me". Also, overall sound just plain TOO loud, especially in this smaller indoor venue. At times could barely hear Hetfield sing and everything was becoming feedback screech. For this reason only, I would rate four stars instead of five (recommend earplugs) but overall show, FIVE stars.
