The two-person-band was very up-close, intimate and outstanding. No hype or animations…just music. I don't believe anyone else could have pulled off such a performance…simplicity, style and grace.
She was good, the two hour standing around and waiting for her to come out- wasn't.
I waited a few days before posting my review because I wanted to see if Meshell's performance would be one that lingers, days after the curtains close. The kind you wake up with, reliving every song. Every minute. And it was. What an amazing night! What an amazing set!! With pallet-pleasing appetizers of the very best of aged Ndegeocello (Outside Your Door, Grace), with her latest release Weather (Dirty World, Chance, Oysters), served up as the main course. Meshell's voice has never been sweeter, nor more vulnerable. The band: Beautiful and brilliant. I left feeling completely satisfied, but always want more. For those of you who haven't seen this show yet, you're in for a real treat.
This was the eighth time I've seen Meshell live. I guess that certifies me as a fan. She opened with "Lady Cab Driver" and the show gained ground from there. She blended songs from her recent album "Weather" seamlessly with songs from previous albums. The show was lively and entertaining throughout. This was a five star effort and evening for sure.
Great set, nice energy in the (as ever) eclectic and attractive crowd. I am so grateful Meshell continues to play intimate, personal venues where the full range of her magic is palpable for everyone.
I have to admit that I was very disappointed in the concert. I flew from the West coast to catch Me'shell and expected her to play her classic tunes as well as her new music. From the outset she appeared to be in a funk. Her music is still brilliant but it was like she was just going thru the motions and wanted to get thru with the show as quickly as possible. She played a little more than an hour and only played a couple tunes from her earlier albums. When the lights came on me like most of the fans couldn't believe the show was over so quick. I'm still a big fan and from some of the clips you can find on YouTube from her concerts this one in Virginia was definitely not one of her best performances.
The Birchmere is my favorite venue!!! MeShell is awesome, but I was a bit disappointed in the show. I was expecting to hear more of a variety of old and new music.
Lets start. Can i please have my money back!! She came on stage with no interaction with the crowd. She was to me HIGH AS A KITE. She played only one of her hit songs. She played her new album the whole night. Thank you but no thank you. Never again.
Meshell's performance made my first visit to the Birchmere. I love small intimate venues like the Birchmere, the setting is classic how you enter. Me and my guest really enjoyed the performance. I will definitely visit the birchmere again in addition to recommending this venue to others. Meshell gave a fantastic performance!
MeShell is incredible. I took my teenaged son and he enjoyed her also. I would love to see her perform again and again.
What can I say, she can do no wrong! Her voice, her band, her bass guitar skills. She was great, very relaxed. I personally got annoyed at people yelling out song titles for her to play as if she's a juke box or like she's a slave there to tap dance on cue. Anyway she was great I love her and she's so sexy.....
This was both my boyfriend's and my first time seeing Meshell in person and both of us were very disappointed. We (as well as many in the audience) wanted to hear more "old" songs of hers. She only performed one. I realize this was The Weather Tour - her latest album, but I think she really should have performed more of what the audience wanted. Also, being from Oxon Hill, Maryland, she should have really let go, being as the venue was "her back yard". Her songs were short - no extensions or long versions. The audience was giving her much love, but she really didn't give it back. I really wanted her to "let loose" on that bass, but it never happened.
She never fails to disappoint her fans and she is so REAL and one of the best bassist out there in the music genre...Can't wait until she comes again to the DMV area.
This is how grown folks do it up the right way. The show was cool laid back knee deep in funk nuff said. Thanks Meshell Ndegeocello.
Love love Me'Shell. Other then Prince very few artist give the kind of performance, just wish she would do more bass solos.
This was my first time seeing Meshell live, and I was completely blown away... I just sat there, sipping my glass of wine, and enjoying the mix of sweet and sultry sounds. I have to admit, I do miss the smooth beats from her Comfort Woman album, but I love her versatility and her talent. It was truly amazing to see this woman sing live! I hope she comes back to DC again soon.
I have been a devoted fan since and have longed for years to see at the band. I was extremely disappointed w/a performance of mostly new songs, each approximately five minutes each. I wanted/expected to see significantly more of the songs on previous albums. Besides, these are MUSICIANS! I expect to see musicians perform. This show displayed absolutely no soul, no grit; obviously done to pay bills without regard for fan expectations. I was heartbroken. No more Me'shell concerts for me.
I liked the venue but thought the sound quality could have been better. The snares on the snare drum vibrated with the guitar so that the music sound quality was not clean. He needed a glass cage or something to prevent the guitar from bleeding into the snare drum. Meshelle is very cool and I love her but I was disappointed by the fact that she only did two or possibly three fan favorites. It seemed as though she was more about making her fans discover some of her lesser known songs or 'new music'. I would have loved to hear a better mix of the old and some new music, especially if it would have extended the length of the concert. I'm still a fan of Meshelle and will recommend her concert to other fans because the price is right and some people might love it, I just didn't love it.
The venue was great and the food and wine selection isn't bad. Great for a date or hanging with a group of friends. The actual performance was a bit short.
