Memphis Grizzlies History

As the Vancouver Grizzlies, the team joined the NBA in 1995 along with the Toronto Raptors as the league expanded to Canada. The Grizzlies’ early struggles — six consecutive seasons with no more than 23 victories — hurt attendance. Ownership found open arms in Memphis, and moved the franchise there in 2001.

The first year in Memphis, they drafted forward Pau Gasol, who would go on to win NBA Rookie of the Year, become the franchise's first All-Star and, eventually, the Grizzlies' all-time leading scorer and rebounder. In 2002, the Grizzlies brought on Jerry West as general manager, and the franchise reversed course. In the 2003–04 season, they posted a winning record, making the playoffs for the first of three consecutive seasons.

A four-year absence followed, but sparked by Zach Randolph, Rudy Gay, and Mike Conley, and helmed by coach Lionel Hollins, the Grizzlies returned to the playoffs in the 2010–11 season, upsetting the San Antonio Spurs in the first round before losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games in the conference semifinals. It was the first of seven consecutive playoff appearances for the “Grit and Grind” Grizzlies.

The 2020–21 season saw the Grizzlies finish the season with a winning record (38-34) and win two play-in games to clinch the eighth seed in the Western Conference.

Memphis Grizzlies at FedExForum

The Grizzlies have called FedExForum home since 2004, three years after the franchise relocated to Memphis from Vancouver. Those first three seasons, the Grizzlies played in the Pyramid, but the landmark venue needed costly upgrades to meet NBA standards. Construction of a $250 million arena was found to be more feasible.

The dome-shaped venue on Memphis' historic Beale Street pays homage to the city's rich music history, boasting murals, photographs and themed restaurants and clubs throughout. FedExForum has undergone several renovations since its initial construction, including a state-of-the-art, high-definition scoreboard and video screen installed in 2017. The arena was also the first in the NBA to have "see-through" shot clocks, so fans’ views of the court were not obstructed.

Grizzlies Granny's and Grandpa's- Gotta Love it!

by McNeil on 12/9/09FedExForum - Memphis

Wow, I thought the overall event was better than I witnessed in the past. I live in St. Louis, it was my wife's first NBA game and she, as well as I enjoyed it immensely. I can easily say that the both of us were equally satisfied with the- in between play- activities, and the Grizzlies Granny's and Grandpa's- GOTTA LOVE IT!!!! Forget the Grizzlies, let me know when they will be performing again- NO- just kidding. You're on to something. Keep me informed and I hope to see you again in FEB 2010.

    Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by PammyWammy on 12/9/09FedExForum - Memphis

I drove from Nashville in the pouring rain to see the Grizzlies and the Cavs. It was so worth it. I was so proud of how our guys took on LeBraun and Shaq. Even though the refs didn't make a couple of calls on the Cavs, the Grizzlies still prevailed. I'm glad to see such young talent within the Grizzlies take on the challenge of a team like the Cavaliers. The Grizzlies should continue to play hard, build their confidence, watch out for small errors and capitalize on the mistakes made by the other team. Go Grizzlies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grizz beat the Cavs in OT

    by Chuck647 on 12/9/09FedExForum - Memphis

I have attended Grizzlies games on a regular basis since they arrived in Memphis, this game was the best one yet. Great crowd involvement (Grizz crowds are usually not very active), great atmosphere in the Forum, just a tremendous event to be a part of. I am so gald I was there. Super effort by a very young Grizzlies team over a good Lebron led Cavaliers team.

    The Grizzlies were Great!

by DBernard on 12/9/09FedExForum - Memphis

It was a very exciting game from start to finish. The team played defense and made plays when they had to. I can see a 35 - 40 win season for the Grizzlies.

My second Grizzlie game ever! What an experience.....from the dinner at Opus, to the entertainment during the game. My mom wanted to see "the stars" of the Cavaliers, but booed King James in hopes of a Grizzlie win! What a game...what a show....what a win! Well done team!

    by TheOutsider66 on 12/9/09FedExForum - Memphis

The Grizzlies beat the Cleveland Cavaliers with Lebron James scoring 43 points in the losing effort. The game went into overtime with Mike Conley hitting a layup with 3 seconds left in overtime to win it for the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies did really well! I honestly thought the Mavericks would win this one. Dirk was having an off shooting night. OJ Mayo was rolling.

Excellent execution of team ball and defense.

    by wanted1986 on 12/5/09FedExForum - Memphis

Go Grizz! The Grizz are most dangerous when they have practice and prep time between games. My family was in the Forum but we need a 72 hour sale for Jan - April games so everyone can support the team. When Conley doesn't get rattled by physical play, he can use his speed to defend. Thabeet can change interior defense and player switching and help can make the Grizz hard to handle. If they work inside (Z-Bo/Gasol) out, they can close out a lot of teams with our offensive weapons. Cleveland is favored Tuesday but on any given night in Memphis...

    Amazing experience

by Grizzdoc on 12/5/09FedExForum - Memphis

The view was incomparable. Simply outstanding. We could hear the players talking to each other as well, it was like we were part of the huddle. Very expensive otherwise, but getting the 50% off deal certainly made this worht it.

Go Grizzlies: a new fan's perspective

by HankCarter on 11/22/09FedExForum - Memphis

OK, here's the deal...I just moved to Memphis three months ago, and I had always wanted to see a show at the Forum. I knew the Grizzlies have always had trouble, but I wanted to see them anyway. When I got to the Forum until I left after the game, I was treated to what I would call a family-friendly block party. A live pre-game band, a halftime drumline, Neely's barbecue, and giveaways? I was very impressed and enjoyed myself thoroughly. I highly recommend seeing a Grizzlies game at the Forum to any Memphian who wants a relatively inexpensive way to enjoy a break from Beale Street partying!

    Very Impressive

by Ecass on 11/15/09FedExForum - Memphis

The Grizzlies performed better than I expected, I was so poud of them. I bought tickets because I wanted to see Allen Iverson play, I am very disappointed. I will not purchase anymore tickets since he is not on the team, I'll wait to see them on TV. When and if Iverson returns, I'll purchase tickets.
