MELVIN SEALS & JGB IN CONCERT:
Electric organ master Melvin Seals rose to prominence in the '80s as a member of the Jerry Garcia Band, and today he keeps Garcia's hallowed legacy alive and kicking with his offshoot band the JGB. Taking the stage amid trippy '70s-inspired visuals, the group improvises their way through groove-heavy sets of jazz and blues-infused rock jams, wowing audiences with their intuitive playing and world-class chops. Seals' virtuosic keyboard riffing remains as sharp as ever -- whether he's lending his nimble fingers to Grateful Dead classics like "Sugaree" or performing covers of Motown favorites like "How Sweet it Is (To Be Loved by You)". Ticket buyers to looking for a good time can expect a wildly diverse, high-energy concert experience every time.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
San Francisco-born Melvin Seals took up the piano at age eight and by his teens he was playing with his church's gospel choir. He went on to record and perform with luminaries like Charlie Daniels and Chuck Berry before joining the Jerry Garcia Band in 1980. Seals recorded and performed with the band throughout the '80s and '90s, appearing on revered albums like 1982's Run for the Roses and 1991's Jerry Garcia Band LP. Following Garcia's death in 1995 Seals launched JGB, a continuation of the project dedicated to honoring the late great guitarist's beloved musical legacy. Since then the group has released several studio albums, dropped a series of live albums titled Pure Jerry, and headlined the Grateful Garcia Gathering in Mauston, WI. Seals & JGB continue to impress Deadheads and jam band lovers around the country with marathon sets of solo-filled tunes every time they hit the road on tour.
Honestly JGB is one of the best GD cover bands out there! We Really enjoyed this show!
Melvin and his band were on a level of sound and musicianship that I have not seen live since the Jerry Band in the early 90’s. Sensational evening in a beautiful room with 5 unselfish musicians who filled our souls with pure joy. Thank you Melvin! You’re a latter day apostle who inspires me to be a better person in this crazy world. Forever Grateful, Stush (Pgh, Pa)
Fun night rocked the house great sound in a great venue
The show was phenomenal. A great selection of songs including Beatles (“ I saw her standing there” ) , stones (“ let’s spend the night together”) , van Morrison, Dead & Jerry tunes . They even did a Bobby tune ( let it grow) . Always enjoy hearing favorites “ Cats under the stars “ , “song for Gomorrah” & “midnight moonlight “ . I was also blown away at the vocals from Melivin on Dylan’s “ Knocking on Heaven’s Door” …please go and see this band that’s keeping the sound of Jerry alive and well . Two long sets that had a little something for everyone & a real good time had by all ⚡️
This is a talented group of musicians with obvious experience in jamming. Really slick, really jammy, and do JGB / Dead tunes a great honor. If you’re a fan of Jerry, seeing this group is borderline essential. I would see them again anytime they’re around. It’s a better show than you expect.
Wonderful performance. So much fun to be part of the music again. Great crowd. New venue for me - The Chevalier Theatre in Medford. Staff very receptive. The selections were marvelous!
Different iteration of the JGB band nonetheless Melvin is sick!!!!! The sax player is special and the way they lead each other....... better with age
Great show! Venue moved us in and out okay. The being all crammed together roped in outside I could’ve done without for set break considering Covid / colds & flus.
This was as close to a Dead concert as you can get. I wished Melvin sang a few songs or at least introduced the band or talked to the audience. The band was super and the lead singer/guitar carried the whole show. What a great evening.
Exceptional show with a great groove and vibe all night long! Staff at the Cabot were friendly and accommodating. Truly a gem on the North shore!
I was brought back to The mid 80’s!!!!! JGB was always my favorite…The vibe and the music felt like it was yesterday… Thank you Melvin for keeping the music alive!!!!☮️❤️🎼🎶
Melvin Seals & JGB played a fantastic tight and well crafted 2 set show at the Wilbur Theater in Boston on Tues 4/19/2022. After a brief onstage technical delay, by 8:15 PM they started out with a warm up jam and never looked back! With Ron Holloway on board as a guest saxophonist, the band was hot, tight, and set sail for an awesome weekday night musical journey! These cats are on top of their game and explore and exposed each others musical expertise! I love and highly recommend this band! With Melvin Seals, Jeremy Hoenig, John-Paul McLean & John Kadlecik, they make the world a brighter place!
The band was incredible, Ron Holloway was beyond impressive. What a way to spend time with family and friends. HAPPY BICYCLE DAY!
We had a great time at the 930 club with Mr. Seal and JGB….. sax player rocked!!….. loved the crowd……. Thanks
AHHHHH! That’s how you put on a show! Great time! Band was Incredible, crowd was friendly, and respectful. Great job 9:30!!!!!
Johnny K. Killed it!!! All you had to do was close your eyes and you would think it was Jerry. Can’t wait to see them again🥰🥰
Great show best we have seen all year!! The Capitol Theater was rocking 😎
Opted to not go due to COVID. I hope Kadlecik does a tour with Seals/JGB again, maybe next Fall.
The band started on time and the music was perfection from the first note to the last. The audience was having so much fun, and everyone was really happy. The only thing that sucked was the venue itself. The staff was really uptight, and something was weird, because the show ended abruptly at 10 o'clock, the lights came on immediately, and they were chasing people out of the building. We didn't even have time to finish our $15 beers. I went to Pawtucket to see the following show, and it was infinitely better. I will not be returning to the Wilbur, although their bathrooms are the nicest I've seen at any venue all summer.
My first concert was The JGB at the Orpheum in 1981 when I was 13. Melvin Seales JGB took me back to that time. The band was awesome and picked a perfect setlist for the evening. A good time was had by all.
