Melanie Martinez on Tour

Melanie Martinez's first major performance was no small gig. As a teenager, she sang, played guitar and tapped a tambourine with her feet to a crowd of over 12 million on national television, where she impressed three of four judges on NBC's The Voice. Since that momentous day in 2012, the singer-songwriter with the two-toned hair has quickly grown into a full-fledged pop star with a quirky alter ego (Cry Baby) to boot. Onstage, Martinez plays with a colorful, childlike whimsy with striking visuals to match. She first took her show on the road in 2014 for the Dollhouse tour, followed by the Cry Baby world tour to support her 2015 debut album. In between, she landed support slots alongside Lindsey Stirling and Adam Lambert. In 2019, to coincide with her sophomore album and first feature film, K-12, Martinez announced her next world tour.

Melanie Martinez in Concert

Melanie Martinez's surreal alt-pop draws from an array of influences, from The Beatles to 2Pac to Britney Spears, the latter who would help bring the young singer-songwriter to TV screens across the U.S. The Queens-born, Long Island–raised Martinez started writing poetry in kindergarten and taught herself how to play guitar by the time she reached high school. In 2012, during her junior year, she landed a televised audition on NBC's The Voice, where she sang Spears' "Toxic." The performance earned her a spot on Adam Levine's team. She made it to the top six before being eliminated. Keeping up the momentum of her newfound fame, Martinez started working on original music. In 2014, she released her debut single "Dollhouse." Soon after, she signed to Atlantic Records and unveiled her debut EP, also called Dollhouse. The following year, she began teasing music from her debut album, including lead single "Pity Party," a dark, dance-y spin on Lesley Gore's classic 1963 track "It's My Party." In August 2015, she released Cry Baby — a reference to her being called "cry baby" as a kid. The album debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart. To support the album, Martinez took on the role of filmmaker, directing some of her own music videos. She'd continue pursuing those ambitions for her second album, 2019's K-12, which is accompanied by its own fanciful full-length feature film, written and directed by Martinez herself.

Everything is well organized. The venue was small but it worked. The opening act was absolutely terrible but Melanie more than made up for it. Everything was great. I would go see her again and I would for sure go to the basement again.

    Melanie was awesome!!!

by Alovespell on 2/8/15The Basement - Columbus

The venue was terrible, too many young kids recording the show. Couldn't see the stage past every other person that crowded the stage.

by lickluster on 2/1/15Bowery Ballroom - New York

So enjoyed the show. She was dressed for the show, could sing and has a personality that comes through her music. One of the few Voice contestants that have become successful and I can see why. She has style!

Childhood theme comes off as weird

by Kaydot on 2/1/15Bowery Ballroom - New York

I decided to buy tickets to Melanie's show as I was really drawn to Melanie's two singles Dollhouse and Carousel. Their moods are creepy and haunting and not unlike the recent spat of Lana Del Rey clones. While I did think it unusual that the two songs were similar with the nursery-chimes and childhood themes, I didn't pay any more attention than a passing thought. The concert, on the other hand, dials this theme up to pretty much the maximum. Whether or not you enjoy the show will largely be determined by your ability to resolve the theme to the show. Her band performs in Furry costumes, almost all the songs are themed after a 4 year-old (e.g. a song called Pacifier), with childish lyrics to match. Melanie herself is decked out in a baby-doll costume on a nursery stage. Rather than being creepy, the theme was better described as weird and out-of-context. Singing was average - probably more the soundboard's fault than Melanie's. All said, her two hit songs came off ok, but weren't really able to overcome the same-ness of her material, nor the odd choices of baby-girl theme. The crowd was on the young side with quite a few bordering on the teens, and heavily weighted towards females.

by Multinightmarish on 1/26/15Brighton Music Hall - Boston

She was amazing, the opening act AJR was so energetic and Melanie was awesome. The songs were strange in a great way and the sound was dark, circusy, and very powerful. It was one of my favorite concerts so far.

Paid for meet and greet but didn't get

by BVBsuperfan on 6/23/14Port City Music Hall - Portland

I loved the concert. Melanie was great. There was some confusion on when the meet and greet was that we had paid for. Apparently we weren't the only ones that were confused. We thought it was after. When we got there we found out that we had missed it. We talked to the guy that checked our tickets and he said that others were confused as well so they were doing one after for those who missed. He instructed us to stay for it. Well, at the end of the concert the security guys kicked us out anyways even though we were telling him that we were told to stay after. I am extremely disappointed that we did not get all that we paid for. We had even bought "dollhouse" shirts for Melanie to sign for us. Not sure if we would pay the extra again. Lesson learned!!!

    Melanie is paying her dues...

by ITDave on 6/21/14Port City Music Hall - Portland

The show was largely geared toward teenage girls. I understand the need to build a following by having a consistent "theme", so I will be keeping an eye on her as she matures and develops as an artist in that hope that we'll see more if the stuff like her rendition of White Stripes "Seven Nation Army" from her time on NBC's "The Voice". Her singing was stellar. She has really improved tremendously, but lyrically, again... really geared toward 16-18 year old girls in my opinion. I'd recommend her concerts to this age group in an effort to support her as she "pays her dues" (under 100 people at this particular show).

    Amazing!

by Motpot on 6/21/14Port City Music Hall - Portland

Melanie was so cool and poised! Her singing was just INCREDIBLE and even though there were technical difficulties out of her control, she remained calm and never broke her character as a performer! I was literally mesmerized through the whole thing
