I think I saw Mazzy Star

    by M. M. on 2/27/19Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I think I saw Mazzy Star, it's hard to tell when the band on stage performed in almost total darkness. I get Hope Sandoval's shyness issues, but you can provide some subtle lighting for the audience to see you, without turning on the bright spotlights. Just pointing out the obvious, but when I go to see a band live, I would actually want to SEE them. They sounded great, but there were people in the audience questioning whether Hope was actually singing, or if it was pre-recorded. Turning up the lighting by 15% could have made this a 5 Star show, instead of a disappointing 2 Star :-(

Super good but way too many people

by pepperoniboi on 2/27/19Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I loved the show and it was great but her music isn’t really for bigger venues like the fox, it would be much better in a smaller more intimate setting where you can feel it a bit more because the music is more acoustic and doesn’t have a lot of bass. But I get it, y’all wanna make money

    Magical

by Baerie on 2/27/19Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Mazzy🌟 shines on. A well selected mix of heavy and weird with some of the more lovely and dreamy. I could not have asked for much but more.

    Mazzy Star... Still has it!

by Bonta on 2/27/19Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I've been a longtime fan & wanted to see Mazzy Star live for years. They did not disappoint! Goldstar opening for them was impressive, really like those guys. Mazzy was as cool, subtle, moody & as awesome as I could have hoped for. The sound quality was so nice, super dreamy stage, lighting & background images added to the perfect vibe... highly recommend seeing these guys live! One of a kind show!

    Into the Dark

by Christina on 2/27/19Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I have loved Hope Sandoval and Mazzy Star since I discovered them (which was not in the 90's). I was thrilled to see they were playing at the Fox Theater in Oakland. The concert was wonderful, the acoustics clear and aside from having to stand for several hours, it was a tremendous evening. The band played in silhouette which I thought would change at some point but hey, artist preference, her show. That just made us listen more carefully and get lost in the music. TIP- got to the Den bar early and you get right into theater and don't have to wait outside in line - good for GA concerts. They have a few food items like pot stickers and egg rolls. Super nice and accommodating staff.

    Beautiful and amazing

by chaz on 2/27/19Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Her show was dark and thats who she is. You don't need to see her.. Just listen amd close your eyes. Her voice is beautiful. Love her style in music.

    Great show

    by M. S. on 2/27/19Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The band in general and Hope Sandoval in particular performed excellently. The sound was crisp, songs were note perfect. The only quibbles I had is that videos and even photos were not allowed.

by PanamaViejo on 11/26/13The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

All 3 acts of this line-up spoke little, if at all, leaving the combination of music and mystery to stand on its own. Fantastic show, and a great crowd at the Fillmore.

    Mazzy Star was unseeable

by crayonberry on 11/26/13The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Musicians were absolutely amazing! Thank god The audience could hear because you certainly couldn't see them with the stage lighting...unbelievably ridiculous. Rip off

    They were in the dark!

by AreciboGirl on 11/25/13Terminal 5 - New York

Mazzy Star was great, even though they only played for about an hour. The lighting was a very dark purple. You couldn't make out anyone's face! They sounded excellent & clear. I wish there was a little more light & they played a little longer. It started to hurt my eyes after a while. Sorry to say, the worst part was the TWO opening acts! They both took about 2 hours in total & it got a little painful after the first hour of standing & listening to them. One act would've sufficed. Next time, I'll show up late. It was a cool venue. Three floors & lots of places to get a drink. They even had free water! I would see an event there again.

This was one of the worst shows I've ever been to.

by Diadelasmuertes on 11/24/13The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

People go watch live music to see the musicians. The stage lights were so low you could barely see anyone on stage and Hope had a music stand up in covering the front of her face the entire show. And she was reading the lyrics!!! So unbelievably unprofessional. They didn't have a cohesive set and played campy music in between songs. Awful. Save your money.

    Typical delay

    by Pace2013 on 11/23/13Terminal 5 - New York

Went to see her a couple yrs back in bowery and she barely performed due to a techinical difficulty. This time she actually performed her set but we had to wait almost 3 hrs. Show was supposed to start at 7 but the cover bands didnt come on till 8. Terminal 5 is prob the worst venue to go listen to live music. Going to see mazzy star tests your patience every time... Definately not worth the frustration.

She stood in back of her mounted ipad for the ENTIRE show. Said nothing, just walked off stage..what a bore... Great music from her..but her attitude and stand offish mentality sucked

    Mazzy Snooze

    by ConcertGuy455 on 11/23/13Terminal 5 - New York

I waited almost 20 years to see Mazzy Star. And well, they sounded exactly their records. So at lest they did not sound bad. They played their songs so quietly, exactly like their albums, and almost in complete darkness that I did not feel like I watching a live band. Hope displayed no personality and did everything possible not to engage the audience. She barely moved at all. I was distracted by how someone could be that still for that long. Her big interaction was to ask the audience to stop taking photos with flashes. So disappointed! To reiterate, print up a picture of Hope and the band, play one of their album over your stereo, and light a couple candles and you will have the same experience as being at a Mazzy Star show.

    Pretentious Nonsense

by Windsore on 11/23/13Terminal 5 - New York

They played in dim light with candles on stage. I left after 3 songs, i came to see the band, I was watching shadows on stage looking at iPads from 30 feet away.

I coulda stayed home and ate a boloney sandwich.

    by shash223 on 11/23/13Terminal 5 - New York

OK, yes, the sound was great and it was a special thing to HEAR the band live. But when I go to a live music show, I want to SEE the band. They played in virtual darkness the whole set. Part of the experience of going to a show is to SEE the musicians make the music that you know so well from recordings. So Hope Sandoval has stage fright, or whatever. Wah, wah, wah. Then don't play live. Or at least stand in the dark yourself, don't dim-out the rest of the band. When 10,000 Manics was a very young band and played at the club I worked at in upstate NY many times, Natalie Merchant used to sing with her back to the audience. Fine. A little weird and annoying, but fine. The band held the stage, and the shows, despite the singer's stage fright, were awesome. Then she got over herself. After all, she was then part of a band, not just a solo singer who could perform any way she chose, to hell with the back-up. The "Hope Show," on the other hand, was all about the singer's fragile ego, not the music of Mazzy Star.

    Finally

    by Darin1967 on 11/23/13Terminal 5 - New York

I had to wait over 20 years, and go to NYC to see them, but well worth it. Met all my expectations, they played most of the songs I wanted to hear, thoroughly enjoyed it.
