In concert Staples is a force of nature, delivering her world-wise lyrics with plenty of passion and attitude while her backing band kicks out red-hot grooves. Itís a sultry, sassy, and majorly soulful concert experience that leaves no doubt Staples remains at the height of her powers.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Chicago-born Mavis Staples grew up performing in her familyís gospel band The Staples, singing at local churches and appearing on regional radio programs. The family scored a hit in 1956 with ìUncloudy Dayî, and when Mavis graduated high school the following year they went on tour. Thanks to Mavisí powerful voice and her fatherís sharp songwriting, the group enjoyed widespread success in the mid-ë60s, becoming one of the primary musical voices of the civil rights movement. Around that time Mavis struck up a relationship with Bob Dylan, who even proposed to her before she married Spencer Leak in 1964. Mavis made her solo debut in 1969 with a self-titled release on Stax Records then went on to collaborate with Curtis Mayfield in the ë70s, and in the ë80s she joined forces with Prince, who produced 1989ís funky Time Waits for No One and 1993ís critically acclaimed The Voice. In addition to her spiritual gospel output Mavis has remained musically adventurous over the years, collaborating with Bob Dylan on the GRAMMY-nominated 2003 song ìGotta Change My Way of Thinkingî and even making a foray into Americana with Jeff Tweedy, who produced her GRAMMY Award-winning 2010 album You Are Not Alone.
Extraordinary performance. Mavis can still pull the house down.
Thank you so much for bringing this legend to London. I love the Music Hall. Great venue for seeing music. Love all the levels and the new premium seating. It was a great evening of fabulous music!!
The amazing Mavis is one of the best evenings of my life. She gives one of the best shows that anyone will ever see. The band is top notch amazing songs from her 71 year career. She is hilarious. She is genuinely a great person who obviously is having fun. Would go to see her again and again.
Mavis is legendary, and the concert was everything I hoped for--great music, a voice that seems as fresh and relevant as ever, and a mix of Staples Family and contemporary greats.
I will never pass up an opportunity to see Mavis Staples. She is a living legend and I hope she lives for a very very long time and is able to keep touring as well!
Easy convenient parking, friendly staff, great seats. and MAVIS - a legend.
Mavis Staples has an amazing voice. I have admired her and her family's talent for decades. It was a honor to be able to attend her performance in Durham, NC. I do wish her political views on our current President had not been mentioned during the show.
Love the small theater for a personalized experience!
The whole event went smoothly from beginning to end. Mavis Staples was inspiring and her energy was amazing as a performer. Her band was magnificent and our seats were great.
Even fighting a cold, Mavis was great. She is a national treasure.
The show and the venue were more fantastic than I had anticipated. Mavis did an excellent job of engaging the crowd. I will definitely be back for another show at the The Carolina Theatre. And to see Mavis
It's a pleasure to still be able to see Mavis Staples on stage. She just oozes class and character. Her voice seamlessly works between a sexual growl and melodic gospel. She loves to perform and her band and singers love her. The ensemble played a tight set of new and old favorites as she promotes her latest CD. The adoration of the crowd propelled her into a little happy dance on stage - there is no stopping this 80 year old dynamo.
Mavis Staples is a force. Incredible voice, stage prescience, and message. Really grateful to have the opportunity to see her at the Cabot.
It was a wonderful experience overall. I do love the Ryman, but the seating at the edges is very disappointing. They should not sell seats that don't allow you to see the drummer, the bass player, and anyone except for the frontmost performers.
Fabulous, adorable, powerhouse Mavis celebrated her 80th at the Ryman with a host of magical musicians. It was a celestial evening!
Amazing show. Awesome venue. Couldn't ask for more.
Despite all the wonderful guest artists it was Mavis who stole the show. Still has a great voice and is so charismatic.
It was a once in a lifetime event. The guest stars were amazing and Marvis is an American treasure. And boy can she sing.
This show was amazing! Mavis shines light and positive vibes the moment she steps on stage. The special guests were wonderful and all seemed genuinely honored to sing for or with the legend that Mavis is!
Mavis Staples is nothing short of amazing and to have all of the other musicians join her was just over the top! Thank you Mavis!
