MAVIS STAPLES IN CONCERT:

Gospel and R&B icon Mavis Staples gives fans a funky piece of her mind every time she takes the stage to perform her empowering and soulful songs. Staplesí commanding voice and confident showmanship is legendaryóin the early ë60s she caught the eye of folk hero Bob Dylan, and the two briefly dated before their paths diverged in the middle of the decade. Now theyíre embarking on a different kind of relationshipóas tour mates. Staples will accompany Dylan on his summer 2016 tour, treating ticket buyers to a powerhouse double billing that combines the best of folk and R&B. In concert Staples is a force of nature, delivering her world-wise lyrics with plenty of passion and attitude while her backing band kicks out red-hot grooves. Itís a sultry, sassy, and majorly soulful concert experience that leaves no doubt Staples remains at the height of her powers.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Chicago-born Mavis Staples grew up performing in her familyís gospel band The Staples, singing at local churches and appearing on regional radio programs. The family scored a hit in 1956 with ìUncloudy Dayî, and when Mavis graduated high school the following year they went on tour. Thanks to Mavisí powerful voice and her fatherís sharp songwriting, the group enjoyed widespread success in the mid-ë60s, becoming one of the primary musical voices of the civil rights movement. Around that time Mavis struck up a relationship with Bob Dylan, who even proposed to her before she married Spencer Leak in 1964. Mavis made her solo debut in 1969 with a self-titled release on Stax Records then went on to collaborate with Curtis Mayfield in the ë70s, and in the ë80s she joined forces with Prince, who produced 1989ís funky Time Waits for No One and 1993ís critically acclaimed The Voice. In addition to her spiritual gospel output Mavis has remained musically adventurous over the years, collaborating with Bob Dylan on the GRAMMY-nominated 2003 song ìGotta Change My Way of Thinkingî and even making a foray into Americana with Jeff Tweedy, who produced her GRAMMY Award-winning 2010 album You Are Not Alone.

    Phenomenal Evening

by OneMowerTime on 10/26/21Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club - Portsmouth

Every event at Jimmy’s in Portsmouth has been great. Mavis however elevated our experience to a new level … the word I’d use to describe it-community. We all were singing and dancing and enjoying ourselves - strangers became friends. Hope to see our table friends from Dover & Portsmouth again at another Jimmy’s event!

    D.C. Music and Justice

by TravelingShow on 10/23/21Lincoln Theatre - Washington

This event was completely inspirational. Amy Helm opened for Mavis Staples. Amy Helm is a great musician and her band is excellent. I would have loved it if she would have performed some movement songs due to the cause that the concert supported. However, she has her own successes and fans to address. Mavis Staples...who is a more inspirational performer and with a great, unique voice? This is Mavis Staples and she brings the whole of her life and experience into every song--it's blues, it's personal, it's political. Absolutely stunning, with a lot of emotional energy. Love her guitarists and singers!!

Sure may be 82 but she sure can sing. Even with a cold. Mavis Staples did not disappoint. A great show with a tight band. And because it wasn’t100% full we were allowed to move closer. Great night out!

    Mavis Staples

by Tommie on 2/19/20Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

In her late 70's, Mavis is still a great singer and every bit deserving of standing ovations. Her singing left me wanting more and I was sad the night was over. Even though she commanded the stage for 75 minutes, it seemed like only 5. Great show!

    Sound

    by J. S. on 2/18/20Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

I either the acoustics were mismatched or the sound balance was off. The instruments seemed to have a greater priority.

Every year is a gift from Mavis

by SkyKing52 on 2/18/20Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

I've been to hundreds of concerts, but this was one of the 10 best musical experiences in my life. Mavis Staples is simply a national treasure to be loved, respected and cherished. At age 79 she is still a fantastic entertainer, incredible energy and passion for her music. She is also just a gracious, loving person. I loved every minute of this concert and will go back in a heartbeat. Hard to say how long Mavis can keep this up, so if she is anywhere near you, rush out and buy a ticket and drag your unknowing friends. During the encore when she concluded with "I'll take you there" when the guitar opened with that unmistakable riff, and a smiling but melancholy look came across her face, I actually had tears in my eyes. 72 years the Staple Singers have been there for us. Mavis is the only one left but just on her own, she is quite enough.

    An incredibly joyful evening!

by LD on 2/16/20The Soraya (The Valley's Center for the Performing Arts) - Northridge

What a treat to see Mavis Staples in concert. She is a tireless and energized performer and brought what she said she would deliver. Joy and inspiration. She sounds amazing, and relates to her audience as though we were relatives hanging around in the family home. Her band is tight and I could have listened to her backup singers all night. The Soraya is a wonderful venue and for anyone who has not been to this gem in the San Fernando Valley, you are missing out. So happy that I had the good sense to buy tickets!

Mavis Staples Will Take You There

by badmans on 2/16/20The Soraya (The Valley's Center for the Performing Arts) - Northridge

Mavis Staples has been performing for over 70 years and she is still going strong. An American music icon, Staples crosses genres between Gospel, rhythm & blues, blues, rock, dance, and hip hop. With her family, the Staples Singers, Mavis was a force during the Civil Rights movement. That legacy for social justice and change continues today in her music. At 81 years of age, Mavis Staples is a force on stage. From her first note to the crowd raising encore, every song is a personal history of Staples music. Every note is sung with the rich depth of a lifetime of experience that few others have seen. From Staples standards like I'll Take You There to her latest releases, Mavis takes the audience on a journey through the struggles of cultural divide, spiritual enlightenment, and hope. Mavis Staples touring band, headed by guitarist Rick Holmstrom, is a tight, rhythmic machine of musicians who genuinely love performing together. If you have never seen Mavis Staples perform, you must do it. She will take you there and more.

    A mixed experience

by Bigfoot on 12/7/19SouthWest Florida Event Center - Bonita Springs

The SWFL Event Center is a fun venue where you share a table with others and make new friends. The food is actually good. The flight of creams I had for desert was very good. Mavis Staples sang well and was entertaining until the end and became political. Her expression of how much she wanted to slap our nation's President was totally uncalled for. I agree he gives swine a bad name, but you just don't go around saying you want to slap the President. I lot of people in the audience of both political persuasions were shocked and appalled. I wouldn't go see her again.
