    Diction Poor

by JQINW on 5/30/15Shubert Theatre - New Haven

If only the diction was as good as the energy in the show. The producers should have sited the show in the USA and forget about trying to duplicate the king's English. It's far more important to hear the dialogue. Unless you know the whole story forget about the story line and concentrate on listening to the music. Later in the show the adults do give a clue as to what is happening.

    Child Actors were beyond Amazing

by Innkeeper670 on 5/27/15Shubert Theatre - New Haven

I took my 14 year old granddaughter to see Matilda. It has been our Christmas gift from my daughter. Beyond creating grandmother/granddaughter memories the quality of the performers especially the children was outstanding. It is a bit of a sad story but luckily it has a happy ending. My granddaughter and I can't say enough about this musical and would highly recommend everyone seeing it especially if there is a child or children you can bring.

OK if you haven't read the book or seen movie!

by Jewels1103 on 5/27/15Shubert Theatre - New Haven

Too much creative liberty was taken to make the musical entertaining. Male actor for head mistress and Matilda in this production was annoying. - Sorry - spent big $$ for a bit disappointment. The person at TIME magazine who called it the play of the year is confusing to me. Very misleading.

    A Great Musical Experience!

by TheRealTrunchbull on 5/26/15Shubert Theatre - New Haven

Saw the last showing of Matilda at the Shubert Theatre. We were up in the balcony, high up in the balcony. The stage seemed far away, but once the show started, the distance melted away. The story line stayed true to the book, but had enough twists and turns to make it interesting. The acting, singing, and stage were simply amazing. Every character was perfect. This was great entertainment for my son (10 years old), my wife, and me. A word of caution, smaller sensitive kids might get upset with how Matilda is treated. Like many of Dahl's tales, it has its dark side. Other than that, I would recommend this show to anyone and the Shubert is a great venue.

    Incredible musical!

by drimeth on 5/26/15Shubert Theatre - New Haven

I somehow managed to grow up never having read or seen Matilda before, so when we heard it was coming to New Haven, my friend and I jumped at the chance! I LOVED it! A great show with great songs, actors, and everything!

Amazing show with an awesome soundtrack! The talent of the kid actors is off the charts, though to be fair it can sometimes be difficult to understand high-pitched British accents when singing :) The set design was very well done by the Royal Shakespeare Company, and fit the "feeling" of a Roald Dahl story perfectly. This book was one of my favorites of Dahl's when I was younger, and the translation to stage definitely did not disappoint. I brought my daughter and her friend, two 4th-grade girls, with me - neither of them had read the book yet, and both of them LOVED it. My daughter has not stopped watching and re-watching YouTube videos at home with scenes and songs from the show, and it's been almost a week since we went. Far and away her two favorite songs were "When I Grow Up" and "School Song". The finale's reprise of "Naughty Children" will definitely have you singing it on the way out of the theater, though. I felt like the ending of the show wrapped up a bit quickly for people who had never read the story, but a minor complaint for an overall EXCELLENT production!

    Great Night of entertainment

by mybestmim on 5/26/15Shubert Theatre - New Haven

Went with my four adult granddaughters and one great granddaughter! A terrific night out, I'm sure lasting memories. A tad long for the 5 year old, but she didn't take her eyes off the stage. The actress playing Matilda had a lot to do, and did so admirably. Ms. Trunchbull was outstanding.

    Matilda was Marvelous!

by marjoe66 on 5/26/15Shubert Theatre - New Haven

We took our grandchildren to see Matilda the Musical at the Schubert in New Haven on Saturday. Everyone loved everything about it. We thought the story was wonderful. The acting was great. We loved the music. I thought the words were a little hard to understand in some of the songs, but this did not take away from our enjoyment of the show. Please read my comments about the seats below.

    Matilda

by Gypsy216 on 5/26/15Shubert Theatre - New Haven

I don't know if it's because I sat in the balcony but, I had a very hard time understanding the cast say their words and sing their songs. I'm not sure if it was because of the sound system or the cast's heavy English accents. Otherwise, it would have been great.

    OK but not great

by TinyJimmy on 5/26/15Shubert Theatre - New Haven

I saw Matilda at the Shubert last week and was disappointed. The show did not live up to my expectations. Although there were a few good musical numbers, the plot was weak and the acting was mediocre. I also believe that my dissatisfaction was greatly enhanced by a poor sound system at the Shubert in New Haven. Despite a very expensive renovation, the sound system still is poor.

by serenity2 on 5/25/15Shubert Theatre - New Haven

This is the best show I have seen in a long time. It was a nice mixture of music and comedy. The children were very professional and i enjoyed watching them throughout the whole performance. The adults were cast well too. all in all I had the best time on Sunday afternoon seeing Matilda at the Shubert in New Haven.

    Not good for children

by LuckyThree on 5/24/15Shubert Theatre - New Haven

With a focus on negative behavior for children and by their main caretaker (the headmistress), this is not a play most children would enjoy or should even see. Some youngsters left the play in disgust and that was totally understandable.

    Matilda

by Tedygirl on 5/23/15Shubert Theatre - New Haven

This was one of the worst plays my daughter and I have ever attended. I would not advise anyone going to bring children under 15 years old. I'm afraid children younger than that will become afraid to attend school . This play I believed showed parental abuse, educational abuse and total emotional abuse.
