About Marty Stuart

Marty Stuart in Concert

There's not an ounce of artificiality in Marty Stuart's stage act, but you'd better believe he puts on a show. He's a natural-born entertainer who started learning about live performance by backing country music legends. As a bandleader he exudes an effortless grace that makes the music live and breathe. Stuart's got guitar chops for miles and once he digs in he doesn't mess around, but he also knows how to get a crowd psyched up in a completely organic way to amp up the fun. When he travels with his band The Fabulous Superlatives, a true country music wrecking crew of top-tier players, Stuart loves to turn on a dime from hard-charging honky-tonk roof raisers to gentle acoustic ballads, keeping the crowd in the palm of his hand every step of the way.

Marty Stuart Background

With a rich, varied career that stretches back to the '70s, there's not much Marty Stuart hasn't done. He's been a blazing-hot bluegrass guitar picker, a country-rocking rebel, a roots-conscious neo-traditionalist, a Nashville hitmaker and Johnny Cash's right-hand man. First and foremost Stuart has emerged as a keeper of the country music flame, championing authenticity above all and forsaking trendiness in favor of a deep-down country spirit. He got his start playing with bluegrass legend Lester Flatt while just a teenager, and went on to work with Johnny Cash's band, but by the end of the '80s he was a country star in his own right. He lit up the charts with hits like "Tempted," "This One's Gonna Hurt You (For a Long, Long Time)" and "Hillbilly Rock." In later years he became a standard-bearer for classic country, mixing it with rock and folk influences as the muse demanded, achieving what amounts to the truest form of Americana.

The show was very good. I didn't expect it to be as long as it was, a good thing. The theater was comfortable and the volume was just right.

This is the second time I have seen Marty Stuart and the Superlatives. They are all excellent musicians and singers. This was the first time to see Connie Smith. I enjoyed her part of the show as well.

I bought tickets for my husband, son, and I for my husband's birthday present. He enjoys watching Marty Stuart every week on RFD. We all enjoyed the show very much. It was well worth the ticket price.

    Marty Rocks!!

by lann91 on 10/15/09RFD TV the Theatre - Branson

This was a great great show. You got your money's worth. No intermission. He's very good with the crowd. It was about a 2 hour show. They both sang songs we all know and love and new ones too. If I could, I'd see this one again.

    Such a great time!

by nshvle615 on 10/11/09RFD TV the Theatre - Branson

As always a great time with Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives! The music, the stories, the crowd interaction- makes you feel like you are a part of his family. As well was the performance of Connie Smith (his wife) and the Sundowners. I purchased early to ensure a front row seat but I am sure all seats in the house were good. The RFD theater in Branson is very nice, the sound system and the lighting were fantastic. Marty, Connie and the Superlatives even stayed after the show for a meet and greet with the crowd and did not leave til all were greeted. That shows you they appreciate the fans and know who put them where they are now in the spotlight.

    Fantastic Show

by Juggernut on 9/21/09Birchmere - Alexandria

This was my concert weekend, Marty on Friday night and Alan Jackson and Kelly Pickler Saturday at Merriweather Post and again at St Leonard VFD. As much as I like Alan Jackson, Marty’s concert was the best. Uncle Kenny, Apostle Paul, Handsome Harry and Marty Stuart come a cross as friends not just a singer and his backup group. Marty’s concerts are pure fun, you feel like you are part of the fun not just a ticket holder.

    Marty Stuart: The Great Storyteller

by MelyKay on 9/21/09Birchmere - Alexandria

I forgot how much I loved Stuart's music. He is an amazing performer and storyteller. Until his Birchmere performance, I didn't know he played mandolin which was incredible. I am a true bluegrass fan and was blown away by what I like to call the Bluegrass barbershop quartet. The injection of gospel was truly inspriring. Based on what I heard, I am looking forward to his upcoming CD.

    Lots of fun!

    by Judy22 on 9/21/09Birchmere - Alexandria

This is the second time we've seen Marty Stuart in concert. What a fun time ... our 13-year-old loved it as well. Marty and the Superlatives have incredible voices, and perfectly blended harmonies. I am touched by his personal stories, and LOVE the gospel songs! He did 3 songs for an encore - they appeared to be having as much fun as the audience was. Can't wait until they come back again. We'll be there.

This show was the best. The sound quality, The talent could be 10 stars or a 100 stars. Marty has done a fabulous job putting together this band of Super players. I would like to see him more often at the Birchmere. I would like to see meet and greet before the show.

    Fantastic show

by Harco on 9/19/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Marty Stuart is a remarkable showman, with a special talent for "connecting" to his audience, smiling all the time, making eye contact with those near the stage, and playing and singing his heart out. His two "back-up" performers were true to their name -- superlative. They were very versatile, playing a variety of instruments and also singing in several styles and tempos, to great applause. The drummer, too, was extraordinary. They put on a two-hour show that was "country" music" at its best, but also emotional at times, personal, spiritual, and fast moving in a way that allowed the artists, particularly Marty Stuart, to demonstate their musical skills. Their show entertained -- and amazed -- everyone!

A great night with Marty Stuart at the Birchmere

by NickAlexandria on 9/19/09Birchmere - Alexandria

This was the second time I had seen Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives at the Birchmere. They are terrific musicians, and Marty is a great showman. The selection of songs and styles was eclectic and the sound they got from the four-piece band was technically superb and fun to listen to. Kenny Vaughn on guitar is always awe-inspiring but everyone in the band is a player to remember. Don't miss them if you get the chance. You won't be disappointed.
