About Marty Stuart

Marty Stuart in Concert

There's not an ounce of artificiality in Marty Stuart's stage act, but you'd better believe he puts on a show. He's a natural-born entertainer who started learning about live performance by backing country music legends. As a bandleader he exudes an effortless grace that makes the music live and breathe. Stuart's got guitar chops for miles and once he digs in he doesn't mess around, but he also knows how to get a crowd psyched up in a completely organic way to amp up the fun. When he travels with his band The Fabulous Superlatives, a true country music wrecking crew of top-tier players, Stuart loves to turn on a dime from hard-charging honky-tonk roof raisers to gentle acoustic ballads, keeping the crowd in the palm of his hand every step of the way.

Marty Stuart Background

With a rich, varied career that stretches back to the '70s, there's not much Marty Stuart hasn't done. He's been a blazing-hot bluegrass guitar picker, a country-rocking rebel, a roots-conscious neo-traditionalist, a Nashville hitmaker and Johnny Cash's right-hand man. First and foremost Stuart has emerged as a keeper of the country music flame, championing authenticity above all and forsaking trendiness in favor of a deep-down country spirit. He got his start playing with bluegrass legend Lester Flatt while just a teenager, and went on to work with Johnny Cash's band, but by the end of the '80s he was a country star in his own right. He lit up the charts with hits like "Tempted," "This One's Gonna Hurt You (For a Long, Long Time)" and "Hillbilly Rock." In later years he became a standard-bearer for classic country, mixing it with rock and folk influences as the muse demanded, achieving what amounts to the truest form of Americana.

    Phenomenal

    by ks37 on 11/22/23The Wilbur - Boston

Marty and the Fabulous Superlatives are aptly named. Four virtuosos playing music spanning 80 years from Bob Wills to their latest album. The show was one big highlight but if forced to pick, highlights were: Kenny's ridiculous guitar work on "Hot Like that', the new "Sitting Alone"Byrds-like tune, Marty on "Six White Horses", Harry's "ballad of Easy Rider' , Chris leading them through a bluegrass take on "Wipeout", and everyone on "El Paso". Wilbur is a great venue for them.

"Awesome"has limited applications but this was

by Echodude on 11/22/23The Wilbur - Boston

This was my 7th time seeing Marty and the Superlatives and I've been following Marty since I first saw him on the Johnny Cash Kennedy Center Special on HBO years ago. I've also gone to a guitar workshop (also at the Kennedy Center) with him. In my opinion, this concert was the best yet. The music was energized and diverse with nods to the Byrds (Roger, Chris and, presumably, Clarence White, previous owner of "Clarence", Marty's tele) and surf music. The latter really tied in nicely with the country and country rock stuff. Handsome Harry's version of Roll River Roll (from Easy Rider), Wipe Out drumming on his cheeks, the phenomenal upright bass playing of Professor Scruggs with the consistently virtuostic picking of that wildman, Cousin Kenny all added on to the usual "blow your socks off"Marty Stuart work on mandolin and his beloved "Clarence". I am even a bigger fan now than ever.

    Inspiring !

by MIke on 11/22/23The Wilbur - Boston

Fantastic show featuring expert craftsmen playing at the highest level. They were comfortable and tight as a unit at the same time. Great song selection covering a range of genre from country to surf. Sat in one of the boxes above the stage... excellent view of the entire show. (Chair could have been more comfortable) Sound crew did an excellent job balancing the band providing the icing on the cake. One of the best shows I've EVER seen.

    Door times/Start times

by Kiki on 11/22/23The Wilbur - Boston

Information on door and start times varies from ticket seller to venue and media outlets. Time for Marty Stuart was 7pm...is that start or door? I thought it was door and got there at 8pm and missed 1 hour of the show. The Wang has door and start... as do most venues. That was a bummer. But, what I did see from Marty was amazing.

    Pure fun.

by Phil on 11/22/23The Wilbur - Boston

Marty Stuart is a great American music treasure and the Fabulous Superlatives are brilliant musicians. This band is so amazingly tight regardless of the style of music they are playing. And they have so much fun together, I just sat there with a smile on my face the entire concert. I've seen the band a couple of times before - once with Steve Miller and twice on the Sweetheart of the Rodeo tour - and it was a pleasure to listen to them solo. If you have a chance to see them, don't pass it up.

Marty Stewart & his band rock Napa's Uptown Theatre

by Kathie F. from Napa on 10/30/23Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

First of all, the Uptown Theatre is a wonderful venue -- small, great acoustics, and good views of the stage from every seat. The concert itself was flawless. I don't know how the musical and vocal talents of these musicians, or their shomanship, could possibly be improved. It was a privilege to hear them and be in their presence. Marty Stewart is a national treasure. When I walked into the theatre I thought using the word "superlative"to describe this band was questionable, at best, but now I know it didn't go far enough. The only down side to this concert was the warm-up singer, who was okay, but went on for 45 minutes which was WAY too long. I assume this was at the behest of the band, but a concert billed as starting at 8, with no warm-up band mentioned at any point, and then not starting til 9:00, was misleading and disrespectful.

Marty Stuart and The Fabulous Superlatives

by Yaco on 10/30/23Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

From the moment they stepped onstage, til wrapping up a two song encore, this group not only lived up to their moniker, they far exceeded. By far one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, for superior sound quality, variety of selections & just plain showmanship, and I’ve been around the block a time or two being almost 70 years. Stuart is as very generous in allowing each of the Superlatives to showcase their talents, Kenny Vaughn doing two numbers, Chris Scruggs showing how it’s done, and Harry Stinson coming out from behind his drum set to just knock it out of park with an incredible slow ballad that brought down the house. Stuart is as soulful onstage as it gets, bringing a plethora of talent and reverence for the historic trail he has traveled and now blazes. If you have a chance to see them and you don’t take it, even if it means driving a couple hundred miles, that will be your loss folks. They left the Napa audience with all smiles and tears of laughter. Go see them!!
