About

MARTIN SIMPSON IN CONCERT:

Hailed as one of the world's most influential acoustic guitar players, Martin Simpson plays with a natural ease that's simply spellbinding. Simpson has been a staple on the folk music circuit for more than four decades, earning a reputation as a warm and personable live performer as beloved for his animated on-stage anecdotes as he is for his authentic tunes. Simpson shines brightest when he's alone with just a guitar or banjo, delivering intensely emotional renditions of traditional folk classics and his own original songs. With more than a dozen albums and a host of other compilations and collaborations to draw from, Simpson's career-spanning live shows give ticket buyers a rare experience that can't be missed.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Singer/songwriter and guitarist Martin Simpson is a true musical virtuoso whose stellar work pays homage to traditional folk artists while adding to their ranks with his own catalog of original material. Born and raised in North Lincolnshire, England, Simpson snagged his first paid gig at just 14 years old and turned professional three years later. He became a staple of London's folk club circuit during the '70s and released his first solo album, Golden Vanity, in 1976. That year, he toured with folk musician June Tabor, whom he would go on to record three albums with. During the '80s Simpson recorded several albums, most of which were entirely instrumental. He also relocated to America, where he would spend the next 15 years immersing himself in blues culture. The move proved to be deeply impactful on his music --  2003's Righteousness and Humanity and 2007's Prodigal Son borrowed heavily from the Deep South, infusing a healthy dose of southern flavor into his guitar playing. The latter album went on to win Best Album at the BBC 2 Folk Awards, and its standout track "Never Any Good" was awarded Best Original Song of the Year. Overall, Simpson has been nominated an astounding 26 times at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, including nine consecutive times for Artist of the Year -- an honor he's won twice. His latest studio album, 2013's Vagrant Stanzas, was critically praised for its understated concept -- the album was recorded live and mostly in one take, copying the intimate feel of a live gig. With an impressive career spanning more than 40 years, Simpson continues to prove himself one of modern folk music's most decorated living artists.
