MARK KNOPFLER IN CONCERT:

From his days fronting iconic British rock group Dire Straits to his multi-platinum solo career, Mark Knopfler has remained a celebrated songwriter and guitar god beloved for his melodic sense and unique fingerpicking style. Knopfler has been touring regularly since the late ’70, and the decades of experience show – his concerts are dynamic, career-spanning affairs that take audiences on a hit-filled musical journey anchored by his world-wise voice and subtly executed riffs. Whether he’s performing Dire Straits favorites like “Money for Nothing” or singing solo cuts from 2015’s Tracker – several of which were inspired by a trip with Bob Dylan – Knopfler always brings the house down with his electric energy, virtuosic guitar playing, and time-honored showmanship.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, where he was inspired by his musician uncle to take up the guitar as a child. He formed several bands in his teens, and at age 16 he made his first TV appearance performing as a duo with a schoolmate. After receiving a degree in English from the University of Leeds he relocated to London, where he worked as a lecturer at a local college while moonlighting as a guitar player in various bands. In 1977 he formed Dire Straits with his brother David, and the following year the band released their self-titled debut album to a Top 5 spot on the UK Albums Chart. Their next two albums were equally popular, but it was their fifth album -- 1985's Brothers in Arms – that really established them as international superstars. The album topped charts around the world, selling more than 30 million copies and earning the band their first US No. 1 with “Money for Nothing”. After touring in support of the release the band went on hiatus while Knopfler pursued other projects. The band reunited in 1991 to release one final album On Every Street before breaking up again for good in 1995. Knopfler made his solo debut the following year with Golden Heart, a critically acclaimed collection that was followed by a string of well-received albums in the ‘90s and ‘00s. In addition to his rock output, Knoplfer is a respected film composer who has scored more than a half dozen films including The Princess Bride (1987) and Wag the Dog (1997). In 2015 he released his ninth solo album Tracker, drumming up excitement among fans for his next round on the road.

    Heavy Fuel!

by littlebeanda on 4/11/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

It's wonderful to be part of a live concert where the Performer and the Audience are so enjoying each other. Mark Knopfler and his 7 amazing bandmembers put on a show at Keller Auditorium in Portland, OR last night that was nothing short of awesome. A set list that spanned some 30+ years of early Dire Straits classics and Knopfler's top notch work of the past 15 years. And Portland fans let them know, in no uncertain terms, how much they appreciated it. 3 Encores! The man is 60+. Talk about a Ticket To Heaven!

    Knopfler brilliant, Keller Auditorium forgettable

by Urquhart on 4/11/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

Knopfler was brilliant, as well as his rockin' ceilidh band. Sadly, sound on the vocals was not adequate volume or balance - take your pick. Keller Auditorium lighting crew - whoever was on the spotlight - less espresso, dude - highly distracting and totally unnecessary to move that puppy around.

    Enunciate Mark Enunciate !

    by amazon1 on 4/11/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

Amazing guitar work of course, couldn't understand a word he said though, over bassed sound guy as usual, why concert sound engineers don't make the vocals the priority always ceases to amaze me. mark's guitar was articulated very well though, would have liked more oldies and the hard driving stuff, the Irish ballads were pretty but got old quick.

    WOW!

by Buildergal on 4/11/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

The eight musicians and countless instruments made for a wonderful sound -- much more robust than Dire Straits. Which may be why they didn't play very many of the old tunes -- much to my disappointment. The Keller needs to get better spotlight operators. The person who was in charge of the far right spot couldn't seem to hold still on Mark -- pretty distracting!

Really great to see Mark live! My only regret is waiting too long to get a ticket, so my seat was far away from the stage. Get up close if you can.

Once opening act was over, this was a great concert! Mark continues to deserve the title of "best guitar player in the world". His band was fantastic. Well worth the wait for him to come back to Portland.

Forget all the legends on guitar...Mark Knopfler is the GREATEST. He and his band rock. Every song is a joy to listen to. His opening act was wonderful, too.

Mark Knopfler is a class act. I loved that the opening act started early and was only 35 minutes long. I loved that Mark and band played for almost two hours and did two encores. The audience was well-behaved (as I imagine most of his audiences are) and the house rocked. Mark has such a great energy. His band members are multi-talented and the instrumental collaborations were awesome. We will definitely go to another of Mark's shows. We had tickets a year or so ago to see him and, can you believe it, forgot to go! This more than made up for it.

    Knopler just gets better

by Rocksea on 4/11/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

That was an incredible 2 hours of nonstop playing and gorgeous vocals. Knofler's voice cannot be mistaken for anyone else's and the rich sensuality of it still just knocks me out after all these years. To say nothing of the man's ability to play guitar. The finesse of his playing was stunning. Hard to believe his hands could still fly that quickly over those strings by the end of the performance. And his band!!!!!!!!! I could go on and on.......

    Mark Knopfler-the consummate artist!

by LBKB on 4/11/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

He is the most astounding musician--his talent is so natural and without limit as is also true of the excellent musicians that were with him. His voice just adds to the experience. You could tell how much they all enjoyed playing together and there was no pretense, just pleasure, love and the joy of listening to beautiful, smooth sounds. They clearly love the audience without being pretentious--no American Idol attitudes going on here. It was simply, a wonderful evening!

Knofler and company good but needed more punch.

by Vanderhill on 4/11/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

If you're looking for a nice evening with a ton of great musicianship, you'll enjoy this concert. There was only 4 times that the group really got together and "turned it up" and the audience loved it. Needed to be a lot more of that, in my opinion.

Knopfler is a masterful musician. This was evening spent with the elite of the music world. HIs band mates definitely share his expertise and the evening was one of passion and movingly profound. And most importantly - he still ROCKS!

Mark and his entire band was unbelievable. They played for 2 hours straight and used so many different instruments. 2 encores. A great mix of new and old songs. I could not have requested anything better!

    Superb as ever

    by Neeley3 on 4/11/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

Mark is touring with his usual band of suspects plus some extras that really added to the performance. There were 8 in total (perhaps why ticket prices were so painful). I'm going to reseach Tim O'Brien - he was masterful but then so was everyone else. Great set list that covered all the highlights in his catalog with some extended instrumental jams. This is the beginning of the tour and I hope someone that reads this can make a few adjustments: guitar cam with artistic image made it hard to see his fingers, the bass was putting off an obnoxious hum and the center spot on Mark kept bobbling. But don't get me wrong - the show was a "don't miss" to anyone down the road on his tour schedule. I was thrilled to hear Romeo and Juliet (but he has never let me down before)... also Telegraph Road, What It Is, Brothers in Arms. How come no one else plays a National Guitar? LOVE THAT GUITAR! Highlight? .... the huddle at the end of the encore and then Piper to the End - lovely.

    Mark Knopfler

by Whovian on 4/11/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

Mark Knopfler put on a great show. A couple of encores kept the place buzzing, but I thought that the audience was disappointed that he didn't do "Money For Nothing".

Wonderful music, great crowd, focus was music and not polytechnics or other "fluff". Pure, delicious music.
