  • Amazing Queen of Fado

by Icelander on 11/9/09Lisner Auditorium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I discovered Fado in Lisbon few years ago, seeing Mariza now was the "highlight" after listen to her music for years. She is queen on stage, her voice is amazing and the accompanists probably the best of best and the emotion... I can't describe it, heard people crying and my eyes were full of tears - I will be back on her concert any time!

  • Mariza was simply amazing!

by azores on 11/9/09Lisner Auditorium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I saw her in Oakland earlier this year. Lisner auditorium was not nearly as nice of a venue but she outdid herself from her oakland performance! She captivated the audience, and left a mark, as I left I only heard people (non Portuguese) in awe of her brilliant performance.

It was an excellent concert. There were people in the audience from over 15 countries and Mariza received a standing ovation. One may have gotten more out of the concert if familiar with fado or a Portuguese speaker, but even those unfamiliar with fado (like a friend of mine who went) enjoyed the concert!!!

  • An evening in Lisboa!

    by Bliss7777 on 11/9/09Lisner Auditorium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I first saw Mariza featured with other young fado singers in a documentary. I became an instant fan. I thought about the film just a couple of days before seeing the Lisner ad in the paper. I knew I was meant to be there! What a night! Mariza commanded the stage as soon as she walked out. She engaged the audience with her charm, wit, grace, and beauty. But it is her extraordinary voice that left me spellbound. I can't wait for the next time.

  • Fantastic

    by Dan1008 on 11/9/09Lisner Auditorium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Mariza is a real star and her performance in the Lisner proved it. Her enchanting voice filled the hall. We were captivated by it... the music still rings in my ears. The instrumentalists were also excellent. Mariza has a stage presence which fills your hearts and it touches your soul. You can feel the spirit running though her. No wonder the hall was filled with fans from far and wide. Anyone who lives in or near New York definitely should go to her performance on Nov 21st in Carnegie Hall.

  • Voice is a powerful instrument

by Polymer on 11/9/09Lisner Auditorium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This lady can sing. Any emotion is within her range. Surely i would have enjoyed it more if I understood Portuguese. But I was not the only one there who didn't know the language, and we all seemed to love the show. Now, I start looking for CDs.

  • She and her band know how to put up a show

    by seb14 on 11/9/09Lisner Auditorium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Mariza not only has an impressive voice, she is also an exquisite artist who knows how to engage the public, and has a wonderful band. She provides what some people would call I think an "eclectic experience", as her show is far and above the usual commercial. Slightly on the negative side I found the venue (Lisner Auditorium): most bothersome it was that at least for part of the show the instruments were amplified too much, and her voice had a lower volume. Then I think the venue was a bit too big for Fado, and it looked kind of cheap and poor. The ticket price was low however, so I can not complain in the end. What the venue had right it has been a very clear and crisp sound for the acoustic instruments, and quite nice lightning of the stage (this might have been Mariza's though).

  • Mariza is magical

by MPBoston on 11/9/09Berklee Performance Center - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

First time seeing this fantastically talented singer. She has such a grace and easy-going demeanor with the audience. Her voice is nothing short of amazing. The musicians are some of the most talented I've ever heard. The Portuguese guitar was simply beautiful. All-in-all a wonderful performance. Looking forward to her next visit to the area - I wouldn't miss it!

The concert was good but very similar (identical?) to the one she did in VA just a few months ago...

  • Mariza is the queen!

by greendc on 11/9/09Lisner Auditorium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Not only does she have an AMAZING voice, but she is also an incredibly charismatic entertainer. The musicians where exceptional, particularly the percussionist. Her rendition of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" was a dream.

  • Mariza was electric

    by Bethesda69 on 11/9/09Lisner Auditorium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I went to this concert more out of curiosity and because I knew very little about Portuguese music. What I got was far more than an introduction to this genre. Her voice was powerful and true, her stage presence and audience interaction at a high level, and the overall performance just superb. I'd go to see her again without a minute's hesitation. .

  • Mariza simplesmente de surpresa

by TangoCharlie on 11/9/09Lisner Auditorium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The quality of the performance, the range of her voice, the interaction with the audience, and the fine talents of the musicians that surround her made this a show I totally enjoyed and hope to see again.

Mariza is a fantastic performer. Her voice is amazing. We had a lot of fun.

  • The best concert that I have been to in years

by Orry on 11/9/09Lisner Auditorium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Mariza is amazing. Her presentation of Fado music is lively and emotional. She involved the audience in the upbeat pieces and grabbed them with the sadder ones. The musicians who back her up are masters of their instruments and the Fado drum solo is one of the most energetic that I have ever seen. The audience, comprised of all ages and nationalities, gave her several well deserved standing ovations and kept her on stage for an extra half hour.

  • A Diva for our Time

by planetmike on 11/9/09Lisner Auditorium - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Where are those divas who bring drama and presence to their beautiful voice? Why do so many contemporary solo singers need to be an acrobat to garner the attention of the audience? Look no further, Mariza may be the queen of fado but she is also the diva for our time. In addition to her musical yet explosive voice, she is an enchantress. You will not be disappointed.

What a fabulous show. Amazing voice, and great personality. I absolutely loved it.

  • Music That Lifts Your Spirit:

by DJJJR on 11/9/09Berklee Performance Center - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Being the son of a Portuguese born mother, I had an advantage of being able to understand the words that Mariza sung in our native language. But by no means would this be an obstacle to my fellow concert attendees. Mariza's performance was so full of passion, life and vitality that a knowledge of Portuguese would not be needed. Her music transcends cultural boundaries, I've had the pleasure of seeing Mariza twice at the Berklee Performance Center and at this concert she was so comfortable that the music flowed from her body and soul onto the audience. I could go on and on, but this review could not do this performance justice, not only her, but her fellow musicians were at the top of their game. Mariza makes Portuguese people proud, for through her, our music has once again become world recognized, not since the great Amalia Rodrigues stunned the world with her performance of "Barco Negro" has "Fado" become appreciated and understood. I thank Mariza for her continued efforts to fuse our traditional music with new and innovative beats and rhythms and thank you for a performance that I will never forget.
