First of all, mariachis are incredible musicians! We're talking 6 violins, 4 guitars, trumpets, cello, the works. Opening the show was a medley of Christmas favorites. Featured soloist was also incredible. We have been to see Jeff Nevin and Mariachi Champana Nevin several times over the last few years. The group never fails to entertain!!
The program opened with traditional Christmas music which sounded fabulous. The Mariachis did a beautiful job. The program then moved to classic current hits. They finished with classic Mariachi music. At the end audience participation in song. It was an inspiration to hear and see the number of musicians the Foundation has supported.
Loved all the mariachi music. Gave one star less because there was a long segment where I assume they were honoring a historic mariachi figure but it was all in Spanish with no translation and went on for 10+ min. Boring. Also there were performers that were not properly introduced so we didn't see the connection to any historic figures. Only getting home and reviewing the program that we learned many were sons/daughters of these pioneer mariachi, Otherwise, a most enjoyable evening.
The choreography, singing, costumes were excellent. The only thing our group thought should have been done was to introduce each of the singers so we knew which relative of the greats they were representing. Not all were introduced by name or otherwise.
I loved that I learned so much about the history of Marachi's and the added benefit of listening to those beautiful voices of the grand kids of these Marachi greats! I will be there next year as well! Gracias por la musica de mis padres!!
Location was very nice and performance wad 5 stars.
What a wonderful evening. It exceeded my expectations. The performances were wonderful!
Just loved the color, voices, dances, instruments. Especially loved the harp. Since I have little Spanish, did not enjoy story teller. But all else was wonderful. Ticketmaster experience was horrible...
Dr. Nevin had given a brief background on the Star over Bethlehem. Which i never new in the Mexican culture. The Mariachi and Symphony were spot on with Christmas music to Opera by Mónica Ábrego. Mariachi Champaña Nevin’s delightful and inspiring Mexican Christmas concert returns to San Diego! Featuring a reinactment of Las posadas — Mary and Joseph’s arrival in Bethlehem. With familiar American holiday classics plus traditional Mexican carols, people of all ages and backgrounds will revel in the joy of a traditional Mexican Christmas Eve. Mariachi Champaña Nevin and Mónica Ábrego have performed versions of this program with the San Diego Symphony over the years, now bring the whole family to enjoy the full program for the first time at the Balboa Theater! Program will include: La fiesta de la nochebuena 1. Feliz Navidad 2. Santa la noche (O Holy Night) 3. Las posadas 4. Cucurrucucú paloma 5. Ave María 6. Bendicción 7. Navidad, Navidad Vecinos navideños 1. Duerme y no llores (Sleep, Don’t Cry) 2. El niño del tambor (The Little Drummer Boy) 3. Los peces en el rio (The Fish in the River) 4. Noche de paz (Silent Night) El cascanueces (The Nutcracker Suite)
Had a very pleasant night with my family. The music was spectacular , reminds me of my parents when they used to listen to that music all the time. The rain made the atmosphere more cozy.
Balboa Theatre staff did a good job on Covid-19 protocol checking, reminding folks of the mask mandate. Excellent musical performance! The crowd was invited to sing along and they were singing since the event began! The complexity and technical delivery was flawless and the variety of Holiday music was unparalleled! Highly recommend this program!
It was such a beautiful experience. The mariachi was amazing, the soprano singer was amazing and all this lead by no other than the truly amazing director Jeff Nevin! Thank for making this possible for all of us to enjoy. Merry Christmas!
Extremely informative regarding life of José Alfredo Jimenez
The Music was great and the Mariachi and orchestra together sounded really good! I also loved the folkloric dancers and the Mariachi from Chula Vista that sang El Triste was excellent! This is my second time attending and I highly recommend it!
10 stars!! Excellent oerformance!! Definitely recommend it, its a must see!!
This annual event is quickly becoming a favorite tradition for me! I’ve now been twice, and both times the show was well timed and nicely balanced, featuring both lesser-known acts and a legendary headliner. Even as a non-Spanish speaker, the performers’ passion and the crowd’s enthusiasm made for a super fun night. Already looking forward to next year!
Energetic, well defined, culturally respectful, lots of talent, excellent!
the sound, the choreography, and the visuals were awesome
If you like Mariachi, this would have blown you away
