MARCUS MILLER IN CONCERT:

Bass guitar legend Marcus Miller has lent his fast-fingered session skills to everyone from Miles Davis to Michael Jackson, but lately it's his solo work that's been bringing the heat. Taking the stage with an unparalleled group of jazz musicians, Miller holds down the groove for the duration of his marathon sets, soloing in turn with his bandmates at shows that often top two hours. Just to give you an idea of how committed these guys are, their encores often extend for up to 45 minutes — a perk fans can expect as the band hits the road for their 2014 tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Brooklyn-born Marcus Miller was raised by a musical family that included his church organist father and jazz pianist cousin. By 13, he had mastered multiple instruments and begun penning his own tunes, becoming a sought-after session musician just a few years later. As a session player, he worked with a veritable laundry list of legendary artists, including Herbie Hancock, Mariah Carey, and Frank Sinatra, concurrently playing bass for Luther Vandross between 1981-2007. He formed his own band in the early '80s, making his solo debut with 1983's funk-inspired Suddenly and releasing a score of albums over the ensuing decades. Ever the multi-talent, Miller also acted as a producer on numerous Grammy-winning recordings for artists including Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, and Miles Davis. Back on the road in 2014, Miller and co. are sharper than ever, setting high expectations for their upcoming tour dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Funky and tight, Marcus' band tore through 2 sets that had everyone in the audience smilin', clappin', and rockin' in their seats."

"Marcus Miller and his band were awesome! The drummer, keyboardist, horn section, and guitar all were amazing. Loved the solos."

"Great show and a great band accompanying him. A three hour show, even the encore was 45 minutes. Not a disappointing minute from beginning to end."

what an amazing night of memories and great music. Reggie Hudlin and Marcus Miller put a tremendous show together. Craig Robinson was effortless in his role as MC. The show flowed like fine wine, moving thru the decades with wonderful shots on the big screens and the music we all loved playing. Can't wait for next year's version.

  • Another Wonderful Event at the Bowl . . .

by frankiealma on 9/7/14Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The Hollywood Bowl has outdone itself this summer with the excellence in entertainment it has presented and "The Academy Celebrates the Black Movie Soundtrack" is at the top of my list. The music and memories made me laugh, cry and dance. Craig Robinson was a very entertaining host who kept the show moving. The guest vocalists were great and the film clips - edited to match the music - were a sight to behold. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! This event was one of the highlights of my season at the Bowl this year.

  • The Academy Celebrates The Black Movie Soundtrack!

by BootsyBaby on 9/6/14Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

This was an amazing event. I learned so much about the music of movies I grew up watching and about movies I haven't ever seen but will now go and watch. I really enjoyed how the musicians played along with the movie clips which made the film really reach out and touch me. Marcus said that this may become an annual event. That would be amazing! The only complaint I had was that the large screen above the stage wasn't used for the band performances like the smaller side screens were. It was used for the movie clips, which was great, but I would've liked to see the band on the large screen as well.

  • Wonderful Celebration!!

by soulgood on 9/6/14Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

I didn't know what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised! Craig Robinson was a perfect Host for the evening..He was Very Funny, Gracious, & a good Musician. I enjoyed the Clips of Black Film from the Past to the Present! The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra accompanied a few Clips especially the scene from "Stormy Weather" featuring the Nicholas Brothers, Whitney Houston in "The Bodyguard" , & Jennifer Hudson in "Dream Girls"! Th live performances by Public Enemy (FANTASTIC), En Vogue, La La Hathaway, Anthony Hamilton , & Bilao...Great!! I did ..singing Purple ain ...I didnot care for the performance by Maya Rudolph & (I cant & won't even try to remember her name) I did not "Get" Why they were included! It was if they were doing a Parody of Purple Rain!! Hollywood Bowl Orchestra Fantastic & featuring Marcus Miller 7 Other wonderful musicians! I hope this is will be a Yearly Event!! Fun and appreciation of Black Film and Music...Wonderful Evening!

  • First time at the Bowl

by Jsfoxylady on 9/6/14Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Hello, my husband and I had a great time at this event. We used the shuttle and it was so easy and convenient. Everyone looked like they were having such a great time. I really enjoyed how nice and dark the theater got . It was truly cool. I would have liked to see more of the orchestra on the big screen so I can see them playing. It was fun, even in the cheap seats ;)

  • Could have been a couple hours longer...

by Karikanari on 9/6/14Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Loved the show, the venue, the audience was great, our seats great, the show was wonderful. Look forward to a continued annual show of this kind. Too much material couldn't be covered. Could have enjoyed it for a couple more hours. The selections they chose were great, loved the fact they played the whole songs in their entirty. The movie clips were classic! Makes me want to see all the movies again. The entertainers were great choice. The host hysterical. It was funny, emotional at times, fun, entertaining. I'd go back to this show every year if they continue it with different movies and soundtrack song selection at every yearly show. That sounds fun. Thanks!

  • "Let do it Again"

    by Clippers12 on 9/6/14Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Very simple, AWESOME! I'd buy tickets today for the next show. The orchestra was sync perfectly with the crystal clear visuals. Showing the amazing footage of the Nicholas Brothers was a lesson of true talent. I'd love to have my children share the experience. The films of th70's took me back to a place when we saw our first 'on screen' heroes. We had a great time.

  • So fun!

by Travelert on 9/6/14Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

The evening was great! I didn't realize how impactful the movie scores were in my life. Loved all of it but felt there should have been someone more dynamic singing Prince.

  • Loved Jose James

by ECBell on 8/18/14Chene Park - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

I loved attending this show, and bought my ticket mostly because Jose James was the opener. There was definitely a generation gap at this show. My friend and I who went to see Jose James, and everyone else who went to see Marcus Miller. My friend and I are also familiar with Marcus Miller so we just danced and sang and had a great time throughout the entire concert!
