MARCUS MILLER IN CONCERT:
Bass guitar legend Marcus Miller has lent his fast-fingered session skills to everyone from Miles Davis to Michael Jackson, but lately it's his solo work that's been bringing the heat. Taking the stage with an unparalleled group of jazz musicians, Miller holds down the groove for the duration of his marathon sets, soloing in turn with his bandmates at shows that often top two hours. Just to give you an idea of how committed these guys are, their encores often extend for up to 45 minutes — a perk fans can expect as the band hits the road for their 2014 tour.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Brooklyn-born Marcus Miller was raised by a musical family that included his church organist father and jazz pianist cousin. By 13, he had mastered multiple instruments and begun penning his own tunes, becoming a sought-after session musician just a few years later. As a session player, he worked with a veritable laundry list of legendary artists, including Herbie Hancock, Mariah Carey, and Frank Sinatra, concurrently playing bass for Luther Vandross between 1981-2007. He formed his own band in the early '80s, making his solo debut with 1983's funk-inspired Suddenly and releasing a score of albums over the ensuing decades. Ever the multi-talent, Miller also acted as a producer on numerous Grammy-winning recordings for artists including Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, and Miles Davis. Back on the road in 2014, Miller and co. are sharper than ever, setting high expectations for their upcoming tour dates.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"Funky and tight, Marcus' band tore through 2 sets that had everyone in the audience smilin', clappin', and rockin' in their seats."
"Marcus Miller and his band were awesome! The drummer, keyboardist, horn section, and guitar all were amazing. Loved the solos."
"Great show and a great band accompanying him. A three hour show, even the encore was 45 minutes. Not a disappointing minute from beginning to end."

never miss their show ... just made me a believer!
The man is the boss of the electric bass and any instrument he plays. We saw him recently on SJC 16.2. He is really a nice down to earth guy given his talent. I immediately became a fan and am in the process of collecting all of his music. Glad to be able to purchase his recent CD on site. I got his autograph and several photographs with me and him.
Marcus Miller is the best at what he does. He is entertaining, fun and the concert was fantastic. However, there were sound problems with crew members walking out to adjust and the length of time we waited between the Yellowjackets and Marcus was way way way too long.
Me and the wife had a blast can't wait until you come back will be there
i've seen mm five times over the years. not only is he a remarkable talent, but he never fails to surround himself with top of the field musicians. he is entertaining and even if playing an older song, he always has a unique approach to it. he also allows much room for his fellow artists to display their talents.
If you are a bass player or learning to play the bass go see Marcus and company to be amazed and inspired. If you don't play an instrument see Marcus to be entertained by his interaction with the audience. Marcus plays songs from albums in extended and remix mode. A good time was had by all especially during the recall after the first standing ovation.
Marcus Miller and his band were INCREDIBLE!!!! Great show from beginning to end, he also played a couple songs from the new album "Afrodeezia". "Gorée" and "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" were my favorite performances of the night.
Marcus Miller was the bomb. Great show. The band was out standing
enjoyed the collaborative melding of African and Brazilian sounds
Music from shows you grew up watching and singing along with. The orchestra was absolutely amazing reviving old hits and catchy theme songs. I was surprised, amazed and excited all at the same time. I haven't interacted so much with a show like this in a long time. It was simply fun! I hope this program will continue in the future.
We were 1000 percent impressed with Black Movie Soundtrack night. It was an amazing night! Had a blast and will definitely go each and every year! The collaboration was perfect, the performers were top notch. Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!
I just enjoyed all aspect of this night at the Bowl. The film clips selection (116) were right on (perfect). The film clips quality were the best that I have seen (and that included films that were several decades old). Music of the orchestra and band were superb. The songs delivered were very good. And, even the host or MC was fabulous. Everything was just fantastic making for a perfect night for my wife and I.
This event was so much fun! I really hope they decide to make this an annual event. It was amazing how they got the LA Philharmonic, big name singers, and The Academy to come together an celebrate great music over the years in black cinema.
This event was amazing the music was awesome! Can't wait until next year! What a great idea to celebrate Black movies!
Fantastic event. Movie clips and music were perfect and brought back great memories. Hope they do this again!
We had a blast. The display of the movies on screen were fantastic. What a great touch! All of the performers were great...Anthony Hamilton was especially my favorite. Overall it was a great night!
Please compile DVDs of the event. They will make great holiday gifts!!
Great show! The only disappointment was that there were a few songs without accompanying video. Possibly technical difficulties? I would have loved to have seen some Prince clips while Princess was performing. Btw, I heart Maya Rudolph. And Craig Robinson was hilarious as the host. They said they're doing it again next year. I'll definitely be there.
I paid $12 for the ticket and that's about what this show was worth. Great concept. Craig Robinson was a great host -- funny and entertaining. I was excited when I heard about the performers and while Public Enemy was the hilghlight bringing tons of energy, the other performers were somewhat dull. I love Lalah Hathaway but the songs she sang were not her style.
