    Madeleine Peyroux ...better every time

by swansailor on 7/16/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

This is the third time we have seen Madeleine Peyroux at Berklee. Each concert has been better than the previous one. She seems more relaxed each time. She has a great voice and a great band to back her. Sang songs from the new album and from her earlier ones (all of our favorites including Careless Love and Dance me to the End of Love). Also performed a couple of songs in French. A really super concert.

    Sometimes charming, sometimes not

by VinceP on 7/16/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

I've had the fortune to see Madeleine Peyroux at a few different occasions, once at the Newport Folk Festival and another time as an opening act, so going into her concert I knew that she had a very idiosyncratic singing style that some people would find charming and jazzy while others to be just plain annoying. At times, I felt that I straddled the line as there were times when I wish she would just sing the song like it was meant to and other times felt that her singing style added to the feel. Overall, I would recommend her but just be aware that if you're looking to hear more or less live renditions close to the recordings then be warned!

the biggest surprise was the opening act

by marzolina on 7/16/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

madeleine peyroux and her band put on a great show; rollicking, fun, and nuanced. but the biggest surprise was kelly jo phelps. i had never heard of him (and, frankly, expected him to be a her). but he walked onstage, sat down, and proceeded to give me chills for half an hour solid. the duet he did later in the show with madeleine was another unexpected delight, and between the pair of them it was one of the most solid musical experiences i've had so far in boston. i was hoping she'd play between the bars, but other than that i have absolutely no complaints.

    Extremely solid/entertaining rock/blues performanc

by JackieS on 7/16/09Lisner Auditorium - Washington

Peyroux has an excellent delivery and her compositions are an eclectic amalgem of rock, blues, zydeco and New Orleans creole/French that is distinctive and I find very appealing. That's why I went to see her and she didn't disappoint. The backup group was accomplished and contributed to an entertaining show that was well worth the effort and the ticket price .

    Madeleine Mag-ni-fic!

    by Teds1Girl on 7/16/09Lisner Auditorium - Washington

I first learned of Madeleine Peyroux simply by accident...my husband bought me her debut CD as a Christmas Stocking stuffer (he just thought the name was interesting!). I fell in like with her Billy Holiday, Diana Krall-esque sound. The concert was no less enchanting. Madeleine did not disappoint. She threaded a colorful écharpe of folk, blues and jazz that culminated into a live performance worth recording! I'm anxiously awaiting the next opportunity to see and hear Madeleine live!. In the interim I've become a collector of Madeleine recorded sounds. On my way to pick up Bare Bones (2009)!

    boring

    by makamae71 on 7/16/09Lisner Auditorium - Washington

I have all of her CD's. I think her voice is amazing and i was really looking forward to this show. I was terrible and disappointing. At one point i actually nodded off. It was slow and lacked soul. I will stick to the CD's. :-(

    Walk out

    by yankee71 on 7/16/09Lisner Auditorium - Washington

I had never seen people get up and leave a performance before this one. She began to sing, but it wasn't immediately obvious whether she was just having a rough start or if it was a 'new style'. Well, song after song it remained the same- off beat and rough- while more people got up to leave. It was as if she was doing a really bad karaoke. We sat and endured it, I think hoping that a few of our favorite songs would come through, but it never got better. We had seen her before, and it was great, but I would never pay to risk it again.

    Love You Madeleine. . .but

by Smik on 7/16/09Lisner Auditorium - Washington

I came to know Madeleine Peyroux's music by chance and fell in love with her sultry, Billy Holiday type sound and the lyrics to her songs are genius. I purchased my tickets real early because I was so excited to see that she was coming to town and at the Lisner. My son and I attended and we were both a bit dissappointed. Show was somewhat dry. Perhaps it was the venue. The soulfulness and flow of Madeleine's music would probably fair better in a more intimate setting (e.g. The Birchmere or Blues Alley).

    very talented but sacrificed clarity

by iCAD on 7/16/09Town Hall - New York

I enjoyed the creativity and range that she displayed. However, not being familiar with the words already, I often had a difficult time understanding the words. She sacrificed too much clarity. Since I wanted to catch the words, which were often very amusing, I had to sacrifice attention to her musical talent. I must add that I came primarily to see Bruce Cockburn, who performed well, though he didn't have a back up band. Peyroux's back up band was very good, by the way. I was also a bit annoyed by the rudeness of some of the Peyroux fans when they came in late for Cockburn.

Madeleine put politics infront of performance

by TheUniqueSolution on 7/16/09Lisner Auditorium - Washington

We have been to all three performances at Lisner. We have enjoyed MP now she puts her poitics out front and that's not right. The audience pays for entertainment not for polemics. We don't intend to go to the 4th show

    Disappointing All Round

by SteveNJ on 7/15/09Town Hall - New York

Bruce Cockburn as an opening act was a very poor choice. This monochromatic, lackluster folk rocker just wasn't up to much of anything. His repetitive tunes (hardly memorable) and the overlong length of the set set my teeth on edge. His genre is too remote from Peyroux's, and many waited in the lobby for Madeleine's set. Madeleine, too, was a big disappointment, though hardly a total disaster like Cockburn. She sang (with perhaps one or two exceptions) only her own songs, largely taken from her latest album. She is a songwriter of medium merit, and it was a vanity set, for sure. Peyroux gained her reputation as an American Songbook ballad singer, and she would have stirred me more had she included some standards. The saddest feature of the evening was her poor diction. I could not hear the lyrics of her songs. Nor could my four companions. A song falls flat when you can't hear what is being sung. She comes across clearer in the studio. On stage, she could use some enunciation and projection lessons. All and all, Peyroux was a big disappointment that evening!

    Madeline Peyroux always great

by Jerrythec on 7/15/09Lisner Auditorium - Washington

Great voice, great range. Very enjoyable. Not as much political commentary as before. Always a great show. A bit too long between her set and the opening act

She can do better than this...

by Jeffski on 7/15/09Lisner Auditorium - Washington

Madeleine performed well but her choice of music left a lot to be desired. Her new album is by far her weakest to date and too much of the evening was spent on this material (Our Lady of Pigalle seemed to go on for ever). It was unfortunate because she can be much much more entertaining.

    Sweet Madeleine Peyroux

    by Jazz1111 on 7/15/09Lisner Auditorium - Washington

Madeline is one of the best contemporary jazz singers alive. I think last years concert was better however; this one was just as good. I can’t wait till next year.

MADELEINE PEYROUX RETURNS TO THE LISNER, JUNE 20

by lemond on 7/15/09Lisner Auditorium - Washington

French-American chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux – she of the striking Billie Holiday voice – played again to a packed house at the Lisner. And it was grand. With a capable quartet of guitar/mandolin, keyboards/accordion, bass and drums, she added her guitar musings and an array of songs that pleased her audience. The first few bars of several songs drew immediate applause as she embarked on recognizable offerings from her earlier recordings. Ms. Holiday was less in evidence this night, but there were subtle aspects of Peggy Lee and Bessie Smith. Standard Peyroux fare such as “I’m Alright”, “Don’t Cry Baby”, “Lovesick Blues” and “Dance Me To The End Of Love” sparked the evening’s offerings. She also gave us tunes- all penned by her – from her latest CD Bare Bones. These included “Love and Treason”, “River of Tears,” Homeless Happiness” and her personal Odetta anthem “I Must Be Saved” Songs with a Parisian flare used an accordion, mandolin and subdued bass lines, including “If You Love Me”,”Don’t Wait Too Long”, Bare Bones’ “Our Lady of Pigalle” and “J’ai Deux Amours”. She closed out a very entertaining evening with a delightful surprising Holiday-esque ”I Hear Music” followed by a catchy Obama celebratory "Something Grand" as encored to an appreciative audience. Madeline was great, the guy on the mixer--not!

by TrickyRicky on 7/15/09Lisner Auditorium - Washington

Kelly Joe Phelps started things off by playing what seemed to be the identical song about seven times. A guitarist myself, I was duly impressed with his considerable technique but hardly by his playlist for the evening. Madeline was miked poorly, and mixed worse. It was as if the guy at the board put on a blindfold and earplugs and started pulling levers and twisting knobs, and then went to sleep. The microphone pattern was too narrow, and the EQ was boomy at its best. Despite all this, Madeline was a trooper, the band was amazing--true musicians each with multiple talents. Her new music is not as easy on the ear as her prior CDs, but I'm going to buy it and spend more time listening.

    Not a great showing

by MarkiePoux on 7/15/09Lisner Auditorium - Washington

Peyroux has such a fabulous voice, but the combination of apparently bad miking, and letting her voice get away from her made for a disappointing performance in general. Of course, there were several staggeringly beautiful pieces, but mostly not so good. I still love her albums, which are produced such that her voice and music are in perfect form. Not so live though.

Main act great, but not warm-up singer or politics

by ConcertBird on 7/15/09Lisner Auditorium - Washington

I really like Madeleine Peyroux, and I very much so enjoyed the concert she put on. I thought the warm-up singer was dreadful (he seemed to be fighting his guitar). I also think Madeleine could have skipped the background on why she wrote "Something Grand" (to celebrate Obama). I'm not a Republican but I don't like politics at concerts. Also, as a keen amateur photographer, I don't understand why they did not allow photographs to be taken. It's not like the concert was some sort of incredible sound and light show that had to be kept secret.
