French-American chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux – she of the striking Billie Holiday voice – played again to a packed house at the Lisner. And it was grand. With a capable quartet of guitar/mandolin, keyboards/accordion, bass and drums, she added her guitar musings and an array of songs that pleased her audience. The first few bars of several songs drew immediate applause as she embarked on recognizable offerings from her earlier recordings. Ms. Holiday was less in evidence this night, but there were subtle aspects of Peggy Lee and Bessie Smith.
Standard Peyroux fare such as “I’m Alright”, “Don’t Cry Baby”, “Lovesick Blues” and “Dance Me To The End Of Love” sparked the evening’s offerings. She also gave us tunes- all penned by her – from her latest CD Bare Bones. These included “Love and Treason”, “River of Tears,” Homeless Happiness” and her personal Odetta anthem “I Must Be Saved”
Songs with a Parisian flare used an accordion, mandolin and subdued bass lines, including “If You Love Me”,”Don’t Wait Too Long”, Bare Bones’ “Our Lady of Pigalle” and “J’ai Deux Amours”.
She closed out a very entertaining evening with a delightful surprising Holiday-esque ”I Hear Music” followed by a catchy Obama celebratory "Something Grand" as encored to an appreciative audience.
