About

The hip hop self-starters Macklemore & Ryan have gone far in a short time: they brought thrift stores to the masses with breakout No. 1 single “Thrift Shop,” released their debut album Heist to a No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200, and came out in support of same-sex marriage with gay rights anthem “Same Love.” Combining Macklemore’s thoughtful, funny verses and Lewis’ expertly crafted productions, their unique take on hip hop has struck a major chord with audiences, but what ultimately makes the duo a success has been their ability to write some of the year’s catchiest hooks. As a performer, Macklemore radiates positive energy and delivers his rapid-fire lyrics with crystal clear precision – Lewis takes a supporting role, cueing the beats, hyping the crowd, and engaging in the occasional crowd surf. The pair are on tour in 2013 in support of their debut album, and tickets are in high demand thanks to their reputation for dynamic, must-see live shows.

The Seattle-based duo first joined forces in 2006 when Lewis became Macklemore’s promo photographer, but the focus quickly shifted to music with the release of The VS. series, which included The VS. EP in 2009 and The VS. Redux in 2010. Their 2013 debut The Heist took three years to write and record, and it shows – from the extensive list of collaborators to the appearance of the Seattle Rock Orchestra, the record oozes originality and craftsmanship. In addition to producing, recording, and mixing all of their recordings, Lewis also directs their music videos, including the video for No. 1 single “Can’t Hold Us,” an epic seven-minute-long mini-film that earned them an MTV Video Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Video. As for the music’s point of view, Macklemore isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo of his chosen genre – from questioning the materialism of hip hop culture in “Thrift Shop” to lamenting homophobia among rappers in “Same Love,” these are songs that embrace diversity and endorse keeping an open mind.

The sound mix was awful. Could barely hear the rappers over the djs in the first two acts, and even Macklemore was hard to hear over his musicians. That said- I appreciate the live musicians and soloists- just needs a better mix so we can hear the words' Also- downside to being so close: when not in the center- speakers blow you away. My ears are still ringing days later. Ear plugs should have been available for purchase at venue.

  • Awesome concert!

by chaoscgo on 11/7/13UIC Pavilion - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I had stopped going to concerts because I didn't find them very entertaining and often found myself clapping out of obligation than true pleasure. This concert was such an uplifting experience. I took my 12-year old son and his friend and thought I would just do my best not to embarrass them as mothers often do. However, I found myself on my feet for the entire concert waving my arms and screaming with the best of them. I love that their songs carry such a great message for kids and grownups alike and the energy can't be beat. I went home with a big smile on my face. I would definitely see them again. Thanks for a great time!

  • Macklemore blew my mind

by SameLove on 11/7/13UIC Pavilion - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I loved seeing Macklemore perform. It was amazing to see an artist perform well live and with so much passion for his work. It was clear that both Ryan Lewis and Ben Haggarty (Macklemore), as well as their band and dancers, all loved what they were doing. The stylistic decisions really added to the show and his stories between songs were funny at times and moving at others. Needless to say, I'd see him again any time I had the chance.

by Anonymous on 11/7/13UIC Pavilion - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

One of the best shows I have seen. They played great music that made you get out of your seat and dance. Macklemore set up almost ever song with a story. Great showmanship.

I never thought someone could put on a show in Detroit better than Kid Rock, but I was wrong. Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis did just that. BEST SHOW EVER!!

  • Macklemore is great! However.........

by Anonymous on 11/6/13The Palace of Auburn Hills - Auburn HillsRating: 3 out of 5

there were 2 warm up rappers, both were terrible ( especially the first one). Macklemore was awesome but only did 7 songs and didn't come out until 9:30 which was over an hour after the second rapper stopped

  • Macklemore & Ryan Lewis was amazing!

by Anonymous on 11/6/13The Palace of Auburn Hills - Auburn HillsRating: 5 out of 5

I was amazed by the amount of energy that Macklemore had, he was bouncing all over the stage. I don't think there was a bad seat. I will go see him again and again and again.

  • Macklemore and Ryan Lewis was great, but . . .

by Anonymous on 11/6/13The Palace of Auburn Hills - Auburn HillsRating: 4 out of 5

The opening acts, Big KRIT and Talib Kweli, were disappointing. The concert started at 7:30 pm but we didn't see Macklemore until almost 10 pm. He was worth the wait though. The show was good. It would be great with better opening acts.

  • Great Show

  • Macklemore & Ryan Lewis = Fantastic

by pravange on 11/3/13CenturyLink Center Omaha - OmahaRating: 5 out of 5

I was looking forward to this concert since it was announced and bought tickets the week before. The first opening act - Big K.R.I.T. is not an artist I would ever listen to, but Talib Kweli was way better and played with the crowd. Onto the main event, it took quite awhile in-between opening acts and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis... Like an hour. I loved it when it finally began, but I wish I had gotten that hour of music.

  • M&RL, Talib Kweli

    by Musi2cal on 11/3/13CenturyLink Center Omaha - OmahaRating: 5 out of 5

Great concert! All of the acts were awesome. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis put on an extremely good show! Music was great, audio was great, and stage effects were great. I would definitely go if they came to Omaha again.

  • Best show I've been to

by kyndalljack on 11/2/13CenturyLink Center Omaha - OmahaRating: 5 out of 5

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis put on the best show I've ever been to. He said Omaha gave it 100% of our energy- he gave 110%. Every single word is understood, better than any hip hop artist I've seen live. It was a production, very exciting. Loved the show. The opening acts not included. The first guys segue was talking about weed...really. You are opening for M & RL, not wiz Khalifa.
