About

Lyle Lovett in Concert

A singer, composer and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums over three decades. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of Americana, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. Whether touring as a ‘Duo’ or with his ‘Acoustic Group’ or ‘The Large Band’, Lovett’s live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music. Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award, and was named Texas State Musician. His works, rich and eclectic, are some of the most beloved of any living artist working today.

    Cold July

by MGBM on 7/19/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester Hills

I've been a fan ever since I saw Lyle & Francine on Johnny Carson in the early 80's! I was mesmerized then and am still that way (never understood the Julia Roberts thing though). The music was HOT and the night was c-o-l-d. I think the easy music, however tight it was, this time wasn't wasn't able to overcome the unusual July cold night. I own 2 Lovett CD's and I'm gonna get 2 more.......

Lyle Lovett and HIs Large Band were LARGE!

by LovettFan on 7/19/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester Hills

Lyle Lovett and His Large Band were awesome. The music was great. They played for almost 3 hours straight. Lyle was very interactive with the audience and his band. He has a lot of fun with the members of his band and always credits them with making the songs sound so good. They played just about everything I wanted to hear. Francine Reeves was with him as an extra special treat. I was seated in row M and at times it was hard to understand the words. I don't know if this was a result of where I was sitting, but I felt if they'd up the mike a little it could have been better. Overall I love the sound of the band, the way they dress and the feeling you get... that each has an important role for the overall great sound. If they had played alll night I could have stayed and listened.

    Lyle has style

by JohnnyHotline on 7/19/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester Hills

Lyle was awesome. His band is top notch The backup singers and Lyle's voice harmonize to create something special.. Meadowbrook could modify their tight restrictions on alchohol. It seems they really don't want to serve it but feel they have to offer it. I would guess it has to do with liabilty. Other than that the venue is great

Love Lyle even in the cold rain!

by luisanne on 7/19/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester Hills

Even with a troublesome, deep purple sky, scattered raindrops, and steadily dropping temperatures the music continued to be what a Lyle Lovett concert always is, perfect. You don't leave feeling like you missed anything, he covers all the bases. The large band, small bluegrass circle, the blues, solos. Its s smooth mix. Very professional show, amazing harmonies, (oh that bass sincer!), musicians are tight, and Lyle's little stories are fun to listen to. I like it when he talks to the audience. I've seen him many times, and not heard any of the same schtik twice. The sound could have been a little louder up on the lawn, is my only little complaint and that's not his fault. Next time I will spring for pavilion seats, but its been a gorgeous summer here and we thought it would be fun to be outside on the lawn. I want to come back in my next life as Francine Reed. The back-up singers, and Ms. Reed really fill out the vocal sound, though I love to hear Lyle's sexy voice alone too. Keep touring Mr. Lovett, and we'll keep coming.

Lyle with a keen wit on top of his game

by SadieSue1 on 7/18/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester Hills

This was the 4th time my husband and I have seen Lyle Lovett (all at different venues). I don't remember him ever being as verbose or funny--he was hilarious! His band and singers were fabulous, the only negative was their sound system was not the greatest and we had good seats. We had trouble understanding some of the conversations, they sounded garbled as did some of the songs. It would have been even more enjoyable had it been a crisper , cleaner sound.

Fantastic and not a minute of wasted time!

Francine Reed opened, which counts as Lyle himself. Fantastic showmanship, humor, and true Lyle. He played for almost three hours!

    Loved Lovett!

by brikman on 7/18/09Fraze Pavilion - Kettering

What a great show! - And what a place to have a concert. The Fraze is one of the best places for a concert I've ever been. I've always wanted to see Lyle, And I was not disappointed. If you"re a fan then you must see him live, and any trip to the Fraze will be "First Class."

    Lyle was super

by Reneethefan on 7/18/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester Hills

thoroughly enjoyed Lyle Lovett's concert Friday. Have been a fan for years and was greatly pleased that the show was even better than when we saw him at the Fox many years ago. He is still the quirky performer that we love.

    Lyle-We "Loved-ett!!

by JudeandLarr on 7/18/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester Hills

Lyle Lovett was great! A witty speaker with a great repore with the audience as well as a first--class seasoned musician and singer. We loved his personality and character which added to his music. His band members also were fabulous musicians, each one deserving of the credit given to them by Lovett. He definitely shares his stage equally among his band members. We also enjoyed his black backup singers consisting of three men and one woman, "Francine", who added a lot of spunk, character, theatrics and bluesy movements to the songs. Plus, Meadowbrook is one of our favorite venues for concerts. And our 11th row seats made the evening even more special! LOVED_ETT!

A long set of excellent music

by wickerman on 7/18/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester Hills

This was the first time I'd sen Lyle Lovett in any capacity and it was excellent. Playing with his Large (not Big) Band, Lovett kept things lively and engaged the audience, even playing Pony on a Boat as a request for a 9 year old fan.

    always something new from Lyle

by Texorama on 7/18/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester Hills

Really good stuff--even if you've seen the Large Band show before, he keeps adding new things to it. And how many other musicians play a three-hour show? Highly recommended!

Lyle Lovett gives you your money's worth!

by DrProctor on 7/18/09Meadow Brook Music Festival - Rochester Hills

I took a friend to see Lyle Lovett. I did not know much about him, but it is one of her favorites. I loved his off-beat eclectic style - a little blues, a little funk, a little R&B and country. I am NOT a country fan, but Lyle does it in a way that is enjoyable.

    Still grinning

by TrixieC on 7/17/09Fraze Pavilion - Kettering

Lyle and the gang never disappoint! Lyle, 9 great musicians, 3 male back-up singers and the fabulous Francine Reed. A little country, a little folk, a little blues, a little Texas swing, a little jazz and some bluegrass and gospel thrown in to shake things up even more.

Lyle Lovett was his inimitable self!!

by Karenrose on 7/17/09Fraze Pavilion - Kettering

Lyle Lovett and his Large Band gave a seamless performance moving from the older songs such as If I Had A Boat to the later ones encompassing, as usual, multiple music styles from blues to blugrass with a tinge of classical in each one. With music and lyrics so emotionally charged lead by his off-beat syncopated voice that I found myself feeling exactly the feeling of the song. What a great concert!
