    Fantastic show for everyone!!!

by Pasadenakid on 11/15/09Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

LW was full of wit and humor all night long. His songs were nothing short of fantastic and it was just an overall pleasant listening experience the whole evening through. RT was amazing as a guitarist and I came to respect him a lot more as a songwriter and a performer. In fact in both of their cases I am going to complete my collection of both of them. My only regret was that Loudon did not perform "Dead Skunk". But he's done it so much I can understand him not wanting to perform every night for the rest of his career. But he did perform "White Winos" which is another favorite of mine so that made up for it. RT performed "Crawl Back" which I Just loved his live version of. If you didn't see the show, you missed a real treat.

    An interesting evening

by Guitarsophist on 11/14/09Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

Mr. Wainwright and Mr. Thompson are an interesting combination of American folksy loopiness and dry British wit. I have enjoyed Richard Thompson's dark and intelligent songwriting and unique guitar style for many years, but all I had heard of Loudon Wainright III was "Dead Skunk" and something played on "Mash" that rhymed "Tok-i-o" with "ki-mo-no." However, Mr. Wainwright's set was entertaining, with a number of songs that combined the tragic with the hilarious. Richard Thompson was marvelous, as always, although the sound people needed to dial a little hard edge out of his guitar sound. What was especially interesting, however, were the songs they played as a duo, where the contrast between their personalities and approaches became most evident. I especially enjoyed hearing Mr. Thompson playing American-style country lead on songs like "You Ain't Going Nowhere," and the Charlie Pool material. A unique combination and an enjoyable evening.

richard and loudon - thumbs up

by DCameronM on 10/14/09Kraushaar Auditorium - Towson

This pairing of Loudon Wainwright III and Richard Thompson seemed quite sensible when I first saw it listed. Both are humorous songwriters, a bit on the dark side. Overall, very enjoyable, and I would go see the two together again, should the opportunity arise. The incredibly stark differences in their playing styles was jarring. Loudon with his first position, open chords, Richard (or Rich as Loudon called him) is all over the neck, Loudon with his fairly simple strum, Richard with his hybrid picking style. Loudon sang many short, to the point songs, as opposed to Richard's, which tended to be longer and more orchestral. In short - if you get a chance, see the show. Two well seasoned (not old!) performers singing their own songs in a small venue is good for your soul.

Two pros in top form (and all acoustic)

by Loudrichman on 10/14/09Kraushaar Auditorium - Towson

Two great songwriter/performers in a great venue: what more could you want? The show ran three hours including the break, Loud played solo and was joined by Rich for two more. Rich played nearly 90 minutes with Loud coming out for the encores. Both are dark and emotionally probing in their lyrics, but also often funny. Thompson remains a guitar master. Not too many people can get that much music out of one instrument. Treated my college-aged son and his roomie to the show. We all had a great time.

Loud and Rich: Neither, but better

    by fatcat44 on 10/14/09Kraushaar Auditorium - Towson

Richard Thompson solo was the reason we went and he was amazing as always. In his hands, the guitar is a completely different instrument than what others play. His songs, voice, and wry style combine to make him a world-class troubadour. Loudon was funny, acerbic and touching with his songs ranging from dark love to darker death, but all delivered with tongue in cheek or wagging ferociously. The few songs they did together were excellent. All we wanted was more.

    Loudon & Richard Were Amazing!

by BeeJuan on 10/14/09Kraushaar Auditorium - Towson

This show was fabulous! I am a BIG Richard Thompson fan, and did not know too much stuff of Loudon's, but BOTH men were so entertaining and SO talented. I enjoyed Loudon's humor and cynic take on things. He has a great voice! Richard, as always, was fantastic! He is SUCH an amazing guitarist, and his voice goes right through to your soul!

    Who Could Ask for More...

by Earthsaverdon on 10/14/09Kraushaar Auditorium - Towson

We had a wonderful experience at the concert by these two folkrock legends. Both songwriters/musicians were at the top of their game and gave us very strong performances. Thompson's guitar wizardry, as always, was just stunning! Both stars were very personable, and the "clown prince" of folkrock music, Loudon, blessed us with his offbeat sense of humor between, and often in, his songs.
