First of all, the venue; the newly renovated Uptown Theater in Napa. This 1920s era movie palace has been lovingly restored and is a thing of beauty. The $600,000 sound system didn’t hurt either. Wainwright played first. He engaged the audience immediately. His twisted sense of humor was very much on display, and the songs ranged from hilarious to serious. Much of this material is about families, messed up families, and who among us doesn’t come from one of those? Thompson joined him on stage in the second half of his set and they played two blues numbers together.
Thompson is a bit more reserved, engaging more with his music, at first, than the audience, but he is such a guitar god that this is okay. He warmed up as the set continued. One of my “bucket list” items was to hear “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” performed live by him, so I can die content. With one acoustic guitar, he glides the range from thirteenth-century troubadour to 1970s-vintage hard-rocker. As Thompson put it, “All my songs are miserable, but at least some are slow and some are up-tempo.”
Despite disparate styles and temperaments these two performers mesh. The encore performance was pure synergy.
Highly recommended!
