    Death 'n' Decay with Loudon

    by Barbwire48 on 8/27/12Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Haven't seen Loudon Wainwright perform in several years and he did not dissapoint. He brought his usual wry wit but this time added readings from some of his father's (journalist Loudon Wainwright, Jr.) Life magazine essays. They were both humorous and very poignant. I really enjoyed his new material as well as him revisiting some old favorites. Opening for him was local artist Heather Luttrell who shared the stage with her father Ralph. She was wonderful.

One of the best Loudon shows we have seen

by alanhome on 6/12/12Town Hall - New York

We have been attending Loudon shows for more than 35 years. This show might have been the best one we have seen. The interactions with his family and songs blended wonderfully!

    Unforgettable Evening

by 2ndcousin on 6/11/12Town Hall - New York

The Wainwrights are descendants of my maternal grandfather's sister. My mother and Loudon Jr. were first cousins, which makes Loudon III and his siblings my 2nd cousins, and (I believe) Rufus, Martha, Lucy, and their younger sister my 2nd cousins once removed. I have known that they are my not-so-distant cousins for some time, and it always made me sad that I'd never met them. I became a fan of Rufus's music in college and only discovered that we were cousins by chance when I played one of his songs for my mom. Anyway, I finally reached out and got in touch with Teddy Wainwright, and through her I was able to attend the post-show reception and meet the whole family. It was an incredible experience. I never thought I'd be hugging Rufus Wainwright!! I brought along pictures of my mother with the Wainwrights when they were young, and some others of my great-aunt, our common great-grandmother, Loudon Sr. and Loudon Jr. I think they all enjoyed seeing these pictures. It was the perfect show for me to see since it was all about Loudon's family and especially his father, who was my mom's first cousin. I am thrilled to have been there and so thankful that I was able to connect to my long-lost cousins. They are amazingly talented and I'll never forget this experience.

Loudon always at hid best in NYC

by hyjacker on 6/11/12Town Hall - New York

This was different than the usual Loudon show in that he did mostly songs from his new CD older than my Old Man Now. Normally and artist can't get away with doing materiel no one has heard yet but on his home turf in NYC and with the guests and family he had he pulled it off beautifully. As always he put his deepest thoughts emotions and life right out there on the line and did what he does best. The new tunes were terrific. He did sprinkle on two or three old tunes in but did not take requests as he often does. The crowd understood in a hurry that he was going to perform the new music and was happy to hear it. I'm sure most of them went out and bought it that night or the following day. It was great to see and hear Sloan ,Rufus ,Suzy , Martha, Lucy and the others and they were in fine voice as always. All in all a very different concert than he usually does and he hit it dead on the mark. My only problem was with the sound system. He would have sounded much better through a line array instead of the old speaker cluster set up but after a song or two I got used to it. Can't wait to see him again and would be perfectly happy to keep hearing whatever new music he puts out.

    Family fun and togetherness

by ImYOURfan on 6/11/12Town Hall - New York

It was great seeing the Wainwright and Roche family members perform together. Especially sweet was seeing Rufus and Louden together. A treat for me was seeing a slide of Rufus's baby girl (who grandpa is Leonard Cohen). All in all, a great evening. (Although the songs were mostly about getting old and dying, but that's just Louden)

    Loudon Wainwright III was brilliant!

    by St3014 on 1/26/11Aladdin Theater - Portland

His songs are a mix of a quirky sense of humor and painful honesty. I've seen him 4 or 5 times now and he is always well worth it. It was my friend's first exposure to his music and he found him accessible and enjoyable. Loudon was very engaged with the audience, took a few requests, and handled good natured heckling in a relaxed and fun way making this show feel intimate regardless of where you were sitting.

    Loud and Rich Uptown

by Napamusicfan on 6/1/10Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

Loudon Wainright and Richard Thompson combined for a great show Saturday night at the beautiful Uptown theater in Napa. Both are prolific songwriters with great selections to choose from, and their voices and acoustic guitars resonated in this setting. RT is a virtuouso guitar player, with tremendous tone and feeling. There was a lot of humor from both performers and really good rapport developed with the audience.

Loud and Rich are a great team!

by snicholsblog on 5/31/10Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

Richard Thompson is always amazing with his guitar virtuosity, haunting voice and his perfect songs. He did not disappoint in this show. Loudon Wainwright alternates funny and insightful with deep songs about his family pain. I liked the new stuff he played from his Songs for the New Depression album, fun to sing out "Cash for Clunkers!" as a crowd etc. As he gets older, he is more obsessed with death and dying but in a good way... Closing songs together were great, especially Dylan's "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere"

    Loud and Rich was Phenomenal

by Mishy10 on 5/30/10Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

The show starts with Loudon Wainwright - funny, smart, poignant - you know how amazing he is. THEN, just when you thought it couldn't get any better, Richard Thompson comes out, blows you out of the water, and you leave floating about 10 feet off the ground (to mix metaphors) . Probably one of the best concerts I've ever seen - don't miss it if at all possible.

    Guitar Gods on Display

by Wallflower914 on 5/30/10Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

First of all, the venue; the newly renovated Uptown Theater in Napa. This 1920s era movie palace has been lovingly restored and is a thing of beauty. The $600,000 sound system didn’t hurt either. Wainwright played first. He engaged the audience immediately. His twisted sense of humor was very much on display, and the songs ranged from hilarious to serious. Much of this material is about families, messed up families, and who among us doesn’t come from one of those? Thompson joined him on stage in the second half of his set and they played two blues numbers together. Thompson is a bit more reserved, engaging more with his music, at first, than the audience, but he is such a guitar god that this is okay. He warmed up as the set continued. One of my “bucket list” items was to hear “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” performed live by him, so I can die content. With one acoustic guitar, he glides the range from thirteenth-century troubadour to 1970s-vintage hard-rocker. As Thompson put it, “All my songs are miserable, but at least some are slow and some are up-tempo.” Despite disparate styles and temperaments these two performers mesh. The encore performance was pure synergy. Highly recommended!

    Loud and Rich

by Anonymous on 5/30/10Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

Loudon Wainright is an engaging and entertaining performer I was pleased to be able to see. Any performance with Richard Thompson, however, is simply not to be missed. Especially when he shows up in your home town. Every performance I've seen of his, including this one, has left me in awe of such an imense talent. As a musician performing in an acoustic trio and we have mined Mr. Thompsons material for our show. Thank you sir for 50 years of inspirition, you rouse the spirit of the earth and move the rolling sky.

Loudon and Richard are two of the greatest

by guitarfan55 on 5/30/10Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

These guys should be filling Wembley, but I'm glad I got to see them again in a great small theater. Both of them are incredible entertainers and don't need anything more than an acoustic guitar to put on a great show. See either or both if you can. The newly remodeled and reopened Uptown theater in Napa is also worth the trip.

    what a night!

by efab on 5/30/10Uptown Theatre Napa - Napa

Went to the show for Richard Thompson--didn't know a thing about Loudon. Loudon opened the show, and was refreshingly funny, even though most of the songs were from his new CD The New Depression, which is all about...depression. Very talented songwriter, and great vocalist too. Lots of laughter. After the intermission, Richard came on, and absolutely delivered for nearly 1-1/2 hrs. A bit awkward with patter, but OMG the guitar playing! And moving vocals! His set was ntense, and clearly there were lots of fans in the audience. The venue was the newly reopened UPTOWN Theatre in Napa, which is fabulous for music events. No bad seat in the house, comfy chairs--and most important, excellent acoustics! Each featured artist performed solo, and every note was clearly distinguishable.

    good as always

by Anonymous on 5/2/10The Plaza Theatre - Orlando

Good as always but too short. a solid 1.5 hours would have been better or 1. hours a break and another 1hour.
