Los Van Van is a legendary group. I would place them in the category of the Beatles.
However, for a group that comes to Miami once every ten years, they were way off the mark in their song selection. They got too much into long sets as if they were at a dance party. The Knight Center is a concert hall, not a salsa hall.
I don't know how many times they said "We are all Cubans" but what about others in the audience? (Granted, the crowd was heavily Cuban-American, many of whom think of themselves as Cubans before they consider themselves Americans).
Look, I'm all for the great Cuban musical spirit which can translate to so many other cultures. But some kind of acknowledgment of those other cultures would have been nice.
As far as the dancing and the rhythm....great, let it rip. However, for a group with such a body of work, to play around with long sets in part designed to give band members rests, was not muy bueno.
