Los Angeles Lakers History

The Lakers are one of the most storied franchises in all of sports. They boast 19 conference titles, 35 division titles and 17 NBA Championships. The franchise started in 1947 as the Minneapolis Lakers in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and predated the official founding of the NBA. At the time, the Lakers were a member of the National Basketball League (NBL). They moved to the Basketball Association of America (BAA) prior to the 1948–49 season. After that season, the NBL and BAA merged to form the NBA. The Lakers dominated the newly formed NBA, winning five of the first six NBA Championships.

Two big decisions in 1960 altered the future of the franchise. First, they selected Jerry West with the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA Draft. Then, the franchise moved to Los Angeles in the same offseason, becoming the NBA's first West Coast team. After several trips to the NBA Finals and trading for Wilt Chamberlain, the Lakers won the NBA Championship in 1971–72, an amazing season that included a 33-game win streak, which is still the NBA record for most consecutive wins. West would go on to become a Hall of Famer, and his silhouette is featured as the NBA's logo.

The Lakers' next era of dominance began in 1979, when they selected Earvin "Magic" Johnson with the No. 1 overall pick. Johnson's unrivaled passing ability allowed the Lakers to play with an up-tempo style that became known as "Showtime." Led by Johnson and fellow Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the Lakers won the NBA Championship in Johnson's rookie season and a total of five titles during the '80s.

The Lakers were led to three consecutive titles between 2000 and 2002 by the legendary duo of Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, including a run through the 2000–01 playoffs that saw them lose just one game in four series. The franchise entered a short rebuilding period after trading O'Neal in 2004, but Bryant led the Lakers to three consecutive NBA Finals appearances once again, starting in the 2007–08 season. They lost to the Celtics in their first appearance, but responded by winning the next two championships, the second of which came in seven games against the Celtics.

Following the postponement of the 2019-20 NBA season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team won its most recent NBA Finals in 2020 in the NBA Bubble behind Finals MVP LeBron James and All-Star forward Anthony Davis. In 2023, the Lakers won the inaugural NBA in-season tournament.

  • Worst Game Ever

by Fallbright on 10/7/17Citizens Business Bank Arena - OntarioRating: 1 out of 5

I will never go to another preseason NBA game. Only one starter for each team played. I get that the Lakers need to be careful with Lonzo and that Ingram was held out according to smart concussion rules, etc. In fact, all the players who didn't play probably shouldn't have played. And that's why I will never pay for a preseason game again. The games themselves should not be presented as real games. They are exhibitions at best. They should not be treated like real games because they are not real games. The players don't look at them as real games and so I was a sucker to pay close to two hundred dollars for nothing. The only thing I can say that is positive is that I didn't pay for parking. There was some public spaces across the street from the stadium parking and whoever's building it is just let people park and didn't tow or ticket anyone. That was cool of them. Thank you whoever you are.

Tried to get seats in lower level but ticketmaster said it was sold out. The whole lower level was empty !! Ridiculous !! Game is always good but the seating was crappy.

  • Lakers; lackluster Nuggets; great

by cncphoto on 10/7/17Citizens Business Bank Arena - OntarioRating: 2 out of 5

i came to see #20 Ball play, too bad he was on the injured list. The Ontario Citizens Arena a beautiful venue; they keep the air moving and it was cold and drafty, bring a long sleeve cover. Would I go to another Lakers pre season game, probably not. As one person commented " Too bad you could not get your money back"

  • Lakers disappointing

by Unsatisfid on 10/7/17Citizens Business Bank Arena - OntarioRating: 1 out of 5

I came to watch new stars. Both Ball and Ingram did not play. Parking took forever. Left game with 8 minutes left. Seats great but game lousy! Lakers good luck to get 35 wins.

  • Not happy!

Disappointed, unable to see "Ball" player, bought tickets for my kids for that reason and was no cool.

  • Not enough Grit

by nationsunited on 10/3/17Honda Center - AnaheimRating: 2 out of 5

Other than a few players like Kuzma, the Lakers disappointed, especially some of the starters. With all the work they put in, it seems that it would translate over to their skill set. It was exciting at times, but they have a lot of work to do. I think the Timberwolves size and strength intimidated most of the first year players, even Lonzo. BI doesn't appear NBA ready for toughness. I must admit that the some of theTimberwolves looked like NFL fullbacks or lineman and played tough. I hope Luke Walton keeps his word and allows the players who do well to start. Luke has the talent, but can he bring out their full potential? That remains to be seen.

Great game and great seats. Will buy from here in the future

  • by Anonymous on 10/3/17Honda Center - AnaheimRating: 4 out of 5

Great game, but I had a big problem with the food vendors in the arena. Many of the concession counters were closed, which resulted in really long lines at the other locations. Also, the food counters that were open were really understaffed and the lines moved slowly. As a result, I missed most of the 3rd quarter.

  • Horrible venue!

by youngmanoldiesfan on 10/3/17Honda Center - AnaheimRating: 1 out of 5

Concessions lines at Honda Center literally kept people in lines for entire quarters. The guy in front of me got in line at the start of the second quarter and didn't get back to his seat until right after the 3rd quarter started! Every line was horrible and general admission parking was pretty bad too. The parking lot didn't have any markers so if you don't remember exactly where you parked, you may be searching for you vehicle for a while.

  • Great venue.

by DPGurl on 10/8/16Honda Center - AnaheimRating: 3 out of 5

This is a great venue to see the Lakers. I go every year. Great seats at affordable prices. My only complaint this year was I selected seats too far past the baseline and it was hard to see the other end of the court. It was not apparent how far past the baseline our seats were when I purchased the tickets, by looking at the seating chart.

  • Kobe's Last Game.

by BoelterDesignCo on 4/21/16Staples Center - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

What else can I say that the press hasn't already said. This game was magical, and just shows the world how great Los Angeles fans are. I don't think I'll ever attend a game where you only see one players tee or jersey that is everywhere. I could count on one hand other numbers or jerseys I saw during the day. I've been going to Staples Center since it opened, and I've never heard the crowd louder. Down 10 points with 2 minutes to go, nerves were rattling with the crowd, but I think there was something we all knew as Kobe fans, and that was we knew that this is not how it's going down. Yeah, the Lakers had a bad year, but Kobe has hardly played and in this game, we knew Mamba was going to finish this game like we have come to know. Mamba showed up, put up 60 points, and won the game. I'll probably never attend another game like that... but with all that said, this was one event that I'll never forget. Thank You Kobe.

  • Parking at Honda Center

    by mario007 on 10/26/15Honda Center - AnaheimRating: 2 out of 5

Had a great time looking at the new Laker players. I will say that Parking @ the Honda Center parking is poor<. Please do not go if you can't make it there 2 hours before event. It takes you that long to park and sit in your seat.

  • Lakers preseason. Leave forever early

    by Jowens023 on 10/26/15Honda Center - AnaheimRating: 1 out of 5

The parking situation was ridiculous. Took about an hour and a half just to park, after spending more than twice as long as what would be normal on freeway. We left early enough that we should have been more than an hour early or with the traffic issue at least a little early, but because of parking we missed more than a quarter of the game. We were starving by time we got in because we planned to eat on way or before game in stadium but by time we got there we didn't want to miss any more. Wife is pregnant so she needed to eat and missed about half the game.

  • Courtside seats were worth the price

    by SCTom1 on 10/25/15Honda Center - AnaheimRating: 4 out of 5

The Lakers were without Kobe, but still managed to lose by 39 because they are outgunned by most other NBA teams. However, watching the game in a courtside seat was fabulous - well worth the money. Wish I could afford to sit there EVERY game.
