Los Angeles Lakers History

The Lakers are one of the most storied franchises in all of sports. They boast 19 conference titles, 35 division titles and 17 NBA Championships. The franchise started in 1947 as the Minneapolis Lakers in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and predated the official founding of the NBA. At the time, the Lakers were a member of the National Basketball League (NBL). They moved to the Basketball Association of America (BAA) prior to the 1948–49 season. After that season, the NBL and BAA merged to form the NBA. The Lakers dominated the newly formed NBA, winning five of the first six NBA Championships.

Two big decisions in 1960 altered the future of the franchise. First, they selected Jerry West with the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA Draft. Then, the franchise moved to Los Angeles in the same offseason, becoming the NBA's first West Coast team. After several trips to the NBA Finals and trading for Wilt Chamberlain, the Lakers won the NBA Championship in 1971–72, an amazing season that included a 33-game win streak, which is still the NBA record for most consecutive wins. West would go on to become a Hall of Famer, and his silhouette is featured as the NBA's logo.

The Lakers' next era of dominance began in 1979, when they selected Earvin "Magic" Johnson with the No. 1 overall pick. Johnson's unrivaled passing ability allowed the Lakers to play with an up-tempo style that became known as "Showtime." Led by Johnson and fellow Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the Lakers won the NBA Championship in Johnson's rookie season and a total of five titles during the '80s.

The Lakers were led to three consecutive titles between 2000 and 2002 by the legendary duo of Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, including a run through the 2000–01 playoffs that saw them lose just one game in four series. The franchise entered a short rebuilding period after trading O'Neal in 2004, but Bryant led the Lakers to three consecutive NBA Finals appearances once again, starting in the 2007–08 season. They lost to the Celtics in their first appearance, but responded by winning the next two championships, the second of which came in seven games against the Celtics.

Following the postponement of the 2019-20 NBA season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team won its most recent NBA Finals in 2020 in the NBA Bubble behind Finals MVP LeBron James and All-Star forward Anthony Davis. In 2023, the Lakers won the inaugural NBA in-season tournament.

Although we lost the game, we had a wonderful time. My daughter and I go to at least one game a year. She’s retired from the Air Force now but we still try and go. It was our thing while she was in the USAF.

This game was amazing. The Lakers have some really good talent and I’m looking forward to wins this season especially since “LeBron” is in the house. #LetsGoLakers

  • Great Night!

The seats were incredible. I will say the beer was ridiculously overpriced; worse than Staples.

  • Good but not what I paid for.

by Dharman on 10/9/18Honda Center - AnaheimRating: 3 out of 5

Hello, I paid a lot of money for these tickets expecting to see 15 minutes of him on the floor but apparently the day of the game was the day he won’t play. I was very disappointed but in total had a decent experience. But I think the Lakers should reduce ticket prices if they know he will rest for the preseason or regular season. I was holding to get a reimbursement or some credit because I don’t think it was fair to pay so much and not have the number one star not show up in a uniform to play.

  • Very entertaining but also disappointing

by DaBruman on 10/9/18Honda Center - AnaheimRating: 4 out of 5

I took my son to 2 preseason Laker games at Honda Center. One in 2015 for the Black Momba's last season and this year to see King James first season with the Lakers. Unfortunately Kobe did not show up for the last preseason game and this year Lebron did not play. We were very disappointed to say the least. Overall though we still enjoyed all the action and didn't let the disappointment linger. I would recommend a preseason game at Honda. It is affordable and a great time.

  • Just One Thing Wasn't Great

Great parking, great venue, great entry, great seats, great ushers, and great game. Nuggets great. Lakers - not great.

It was fun taking my son to watch the Lakers play, however it felt disrespectful that Luke didn't even play Lonzo Ball or Brandon Ingram. I've hosted many events at Staples center and it seems that only the LA fans are worthy of their presence. I will not attend preseason games in the future. I'd like my money back. lol

  • Laker game was horrible!!!

by Sylmaster on 10/9/17Citizens Business Bank Arena - OntarioRating: 1 out of 5

The Laker game on 10/04/17 was horrible!! Ticketmaster sold me tickets for seats that do not exist at the Citizens Bank Arena. We missed half of the game because our seats didn't exist!!! the personnel from the Citizens Bank arena were able to accommodate us with other seats after half time. .. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED AND UPSET WITH TICKETMASTER !! I have been buying tickets with Ticketmaster for the pre-season Lakers game for the past 4 years and never had I had this experience. ...

  • Fun pre-season game

Great venue (and very close to home) to watch a pre-season Lakers game since never having been to a professional basketball game before.

  • Great venue

We had such a great time again this year at Citizens Business Bank Arena seeing our Los Angeles Lakers play. We have done this for several years and are never disappointed. Easy access for us and always great seats. We almost wish you had more games with the Lakers there.

Went to a Pre-season Laker game had a great time. Very clean facility and good signage. The usher Bob (Robert) was so nice and accommodating. My only critique is the jumbotron needs to be updated, it's doesn't show a very clear picture. Would definitely go again!

Title says it all, 20 points down after 1st quarter the Lakers stay even the rest of the knight minus 3, yes 3, starters.
