Los Angeles Lakers History

The Lakers are one of the most storied franchises in all of sports. They boast 19 conference titles, 35 division titles and 17 NBA Championships. The franchise started in 1947 as the Minneapolis Lakers in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and predated the official founding of the NBA. At the time, the Lakers were a member of the National Basketball League (NBL). They moved to the Basketball Association of America (BAA) prior to the 1948–49 season. After that season, the NBL and BAA merged to form the NBA. The Lakers dominated the newly formed NBA, winning five of the first six NBA Championships.

Two big decisions in 1960 altered the future of the franchise. First, they selected Jerry West with the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA Draft. Then, the franchise moved to Los Angeles in the same offseason, becoming the NBA's first West Coast team. After several trips to the NBA Finals and trading for Wilt Chamberlain, the Lakers won the NBA Championship in 1971–72, an amazing season that included a 33-game win streak, which is still the NBA record for most consecutive wins. West would go on to become a Hall of Famer, and his silhouette is featured as the NBA's logo.

The Lakers' next era of dominance began in 1979, when they selected Earvin "Magic" Johnson with the No. 1 overall pick. Johnson's unrivaled passing ability allowed the Lakers to play with an up-tempo style that became known as "Showtime." Led by Johnson and fellow Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the Lakers won the NBA Championship in Johnson's rookie season and a total of five titles during the '80s.

The Lakers were led to three consecutive titles between 2000 and 2002 by the legendary duo of Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, including a run through the 2000–01 playoffs that saw them lose just one game in four series. The franchise entered a short rebuilding period after trading O'Neal in 2004, but Bryant led the Lakers to three consecutive NBA Finals appearances once again, starting in the 2007–08 season. They lost to the Celtics in their first appearance, but responded by winning the next two championships, the second of which came in seven games against the Celtics.

Following the postponement of the 2019-20 NBA season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team won its most recent NBA Finals in 2020 in the NBA Bubble behind Finals MVP LeBron James and All-Star forward Anthony Davis. In 2023, the Lakers won the inaugural NBA in-season tournament.

It was a great time the venue was fabulous, and the seats were phenomenal.

  • During the event, the queue was excessively long

by Benson on 10/10/24Acrisure Arena at Greater Palm Springs - Palm DesertRating: 4 out of 5

There were long lines for bag checks, long lines for the bathroom at half-time, long lines for food

  • Great venue

by Neil on 10/9/24Acrisure Arena at Greater Palm Springs - Palm DesertRating: 5 out of 5

We travelled from Australia to watch the game. The venue was excellent with all seats having a great view. Access to food, drinks and restrooms was easy. I loved all the food options outside. No waiting for drinks and food either.

  • Fantastic

Lakers and Suns game was the best ever. I love both teams. I got to see history in the making for NBA. James and James Jr. both playing in the same game. I was sooo happy. Great time in the Desert, safe and not as crowded.

  • Nice to have teams here

by BonBon on 10/9/24Acrisure Arena at Greater Palm Springs - Palm DesertRating: 5 out of 5

Not being able to see them at other play in LA because of time and money having them here in the desert it's been awesome Affordable it even if the pregame and my sons where so happy for the birthday present

  • Worst Arena

by Acrisure on 10/9/24Acrisure Arena at Greater Palm Springs - Palm DesertRating: 1 out of 5

This arena is not equipped for NBA games. Acrisure overcharges for what they produce.

  • Lakers in the Coachella Valley

by Lakers12 on 10/7/24Acrisure Arena at Greater Palm Springs - Palm DesertRating: 5 out of 5

Great experience at Acrisure arena. Christian and Scooby were amazing at halftime!! Brought my 86 year old mom to see Lebron. She watches every Laker game. We were totally bummed Lebron James and Anthony Davis didn’t put on a uniform and play for a few minutes. People paid a lot of money to see them play. A lot of kids running around in their jerseys and they didn’t even get to see them play!

  • Showtime and the Lakers

by Rich on 10/7/24Acrisure Arena at Greater Palm Springs - Palm DesertRating: 5 out of 5

Although they lost to Minnesota, it was quite a show and very enjoyable. Acrisure is a great venue for about everything. We liked seeing Bronny in his debut and particularly when he made a basket.

  • Preseason

by Ygardner on 10/7/24Acrisure Arena at Greater Palm Springs - Palm DesertRating: 5 out of 5

We loved watching the lakers in their first preseason game. The Acrisure venue is amazing and every seat is a good seat. We’ll definitely go to another pro game. We took our son for his birthday and it was the best gift. The venue also has a good selection of food, clean bathrooms, easy access parking and exiting. I hate writing good reviews because then people want to go and make it crowded but it really was a great experience.

  • Fun night

by CM on 10/7/24Acrisure Arena at Greater Palm Springs - Palm DesertRating: 4 out of 5

Too bad LeBron and Anthony Davis were resting- Arena is a great venue except for entry procedures and ride share departures

  • Laker Fan

by Jassen on 10/7/24Acrisure Arena at Greater Palm Springs - Palm DesertRating: 3 out of 5

Great having a local event with NBA stars right in our backyard. However, very disappointed in the fact that Lebron James, Anthony Davis, and Anthony Edwards didn't play in the game. If they are scheduling the teams to come out here for only 2 games then these players should be playing both games.

  • Team sucked Lebron should have played!

by Illy17 on 10/7/24Acrisure Arena at Greater Palm Springs - Palm DesertRating: 1 out of 5

The parking at this arena really sucked. Traffic was horrible and to top it off LeBron James didn’t play. The seating sucked seats are so close together more than usual in certain areas.

  • CRAZY PRICES

by Leah on 10/7/24Acrisure Arena at Greater Palm Springs - Palm DesertRating: 2 out of 5

I love the lakers but the prices were extreme for such bad seats we thought the high up seats would be okay since we go to the hockey games and there great seats but not good at all and to pricey

  • Epic Game

by Ronald on 5/1/24Crypto.com Arena - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I’ve watched baseball, football, soccer all over Europe and America and I must say NBA games really know how to put on a show. What a spectacle.
