Los Angeles Lakers History

The Lakers are one of the most storied franchises in all of sports. They boast 19 conference titles, 35 division titles and 17 NBA Championships. The franchise started in 1947 as the Minneapolis Lakers in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and predated the official founding of the NBA. At the time, the Lakers were a member of the National Basketball League (NBL). They moved to the Basketball Association of America (BAA) prior to the 1948–49 season. After that season, the NBL and BAA merged to form the NBA. The Lakers dominated the newly formed NBA, winning five of the first six NBA Championships.

Two big decisions in 1960 altered the future of the franchise. First, they selected Jerry West with the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA Draft. Then, the franchise moved to Los Angeles in the same offseason, becoming the NBA's first West Coast team. After several trips to the NBA Finals and trading for Wilt Chamberlain, the Lakers won the NBA Championship in 1971–72, an amazing season that included a 33-game win streak, which is still the NBA record for most consecutive wins. West would go on to become a Hall of Famer, and his silhouette is featured as the NBA's logo.

The Lakers' next era of dominance began in 1979, when they selected Earvin "Magic" Johnson with the No. 1 overall pick. Johnson's unrivaled passing ability allowed the Lakers to play with an up-tempo style that became known as "Showtime." Led by Johnson and fellow Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the Lakers won the NBA Championship in Johnson's rookie season and a total of five titles during the '80s.

The Lakers were led to three consecutive titles between 2000 and 2002 by the legendary duo of Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, including a run through the 2000–01 playoffs that saw them lose just one game in four series. The franchise entered a short rebuilding period after trading O'Neal in 2004, but Bryant led the Lakers to three consecutive NBA Finals appearances once again, starting in the 2007–08 season. They lost to the Celtics in their first appearance, but responded by winning the next two championships, the second of which came in seven games against the Celtics.

Following the postponement of the 2019-20 NBA season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team won its most recent NBA Finals in 2020 in the NBA Bubble behind Finals MVP LeBron James and All-Star forward Anthony Davis. In 2023, the Lakers won the inaugural NBA in-season tournament.

  • Goodish

by First timer on 4/3/25Crypto.com Arena - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

We had a large group of 9 and it went smoothly. It was everyone's first time and we were very excited. Parking in lot W was great! Having bought advance parking made it helpful and smooth to get in to the structure. Parking was well organized. I felt the announcer was OK, could have had and given more energy to his announcing which would have pumped up the crowd more. Maybe it's intentional to keep spectators calm? Seats were comfortable and easy to manuever. Food lines moved pretty quickly but naturally expensive. There needs to be displayed prices for the drink/ snack nook where you just grab and go. I think it's an Amazon type mini store where the cameras catch what you pick up but 1 hr later you get a large charge, no itemized list, just a very large chragr...beware! Overall good experience but maybe not exciting enough to make us want to go back.

  • Worst game ever attended

by Salim EL Fakhry on 3/23/25Crypto.com Arena - Los AngelesRating: 1 out of 5

We booked 2 expensive tickets to watch the Los Angeles Lakers play against the Bucks. Nobody from the main squad played for unknown reasons; they just sat on the bench, watching. Instead, we got stuck watching the worst game I’ve ever seen. We ended up leaving this rookie game early.

  • Disrespectful to the fans

by LuizFelipe on 3/23/25Crypto.com Arena - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5

Watching an NBA game live is an amazing experience. Unfortunately, for those like me who had the dream of going to a Lakers game and are coming from another country to do that, the team decided to sit out all of their regular starters in this game. It’s just disrespectful to the fans.

  • Waste of time

by Jose on 3/23/25Crypto.com Arena - Los AngelesRating: 1 out of 5

I paid a ton of money just to go watch a bunch of benchwarmers play. 7 players from the Lakers decided they needed a day off from playing basketball. Absolutely embarrassing and a joke. I wouldn't recommend to plan this ahead of time and rather make a same day decision once you are sure at least the starters will be playing.

by Laz on 3/9/25Crypto.com Arena - Los AngelesRating: 1 out of 5

They herd thousands and thousands of people in and out of two entrances/exits and leave many closed for absolutely no reason

  • Best game ever

by MarieM on 3/9/25Crypto.com Arena - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I live in Australia and was in LA on holiday so the Lakers was my first NBA game I've seen live, it was so much fun, time goes so much faster than watching it on TV and has a real party atmosphere.

  • Nice Arena, Fun Game, But…

by Don on 2/28/25Crypto.com Arena - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

Enjoyed the arena, especially the Terrace seating. The game was fun seeing Luka play his former team. But … concession prices were ridiculously high and the selection was not all that great. Also, using ride share for post game transportation was somewhat confusing. Sure there’s a better way to manage the ride share pick up area.

  • Great evening!

by Yaco on 12/26/24Crypto.com Arena - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Visiting from Paris (France), we wanted to have the Lakers experience while in town. It was really great, we had a good time (even though we lost ahah)! The only downside was definitely the chairs!! We were section 306 and to be honest they just suck!!! We came the day before for Disney on Ice with front row seats and we definitely felt the difference! Will stick to front row next time (because there will definitely be a next time!) :)

  • Overall a great experience!

by Cj on 11/16/24Crypto.com Arena - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

We were always going to see a Lakers game while visiting LA. The atmosphere was incredible and the game was entertaining and exciting. We also bought merchandise and are so happy with our jackets and jerseys! Unfortunately we had a horrible experience trying to access the two free tacos from jack in the box for a lakers win. We left the restaurant with nothing tacos at all. The staff were so difficult and lakers would probably be better off seeking a different sponsor. We will never be going to jack in the box again while we are here. We did find fat sals across the road with outstanding service and much better food to offer!
