Los Angeles Chargers History

Established in Los Angeles in 1959 as a charter member of the American Football League, the Chargers moved south in 1961 and played in San Diego through the 2016 season. Advancing to five of the first six AFL Championship games ever played, the Chargers claimed the 1963 title and later joined the National Football League when the two leagues merged in 1970.

Since the merger, the Chargers have appeared in the playoffs 15 times and went on to appear in Super Bowl XXIX in 1999. They have captured 15 division titles to date. In 2017, the Chargers moved back to Los Angeles after 56 seasons in San Diego. The team has a total of 15 inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including LaDainian Tomlinson, Lance Alworth, Ron Mix, Sid Gillman, Dan Fouts, Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joiner, Fred Dean, Bobby Beathard, Don Coryell, and Junior Seau.

Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium

The Chargers called the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum home during the team’s first year of existence in 1959. After relocating from San Diego to Los Angeles in 2017, the team played at Dignity Health Sports Park through the 2019 season while SoFi Stadium was under construction. As the first indoor-outdoor stadium in America, SoFi Stadium is a state-of-the-art venue that can accommodate up to 70,240 fans for Chargers games. Costing $4.9 billion to construct, it is the most expensive NFL stadium to be built.

Located on the site of the former Hollywood Park racetrack, the stadium has played host to a variety of sporting events, including Super Bowl LVI in 2022 and the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship, and will be the site for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the Olympic Games in 2028. It is also the home field for the Rams, making SoFi Stadium one of two stadiums currently shared by two NFL teams.

    Chargers were awesome!!

by KK14 on 9/8/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Chargers - San Diego

Even though it was pre-season the game was packed and a lot of fun! It was actually my first NFL game.

    Chargers smashed the 49ers!

by Chuluana on 9/8/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Chargers - San Diego

Bought tickets online through a special event that made them only $19.00 each. The seats weren't the best, but they weren't the worst either. We sat in Loge 21 at Qualcomm Stadium, and my only complaint is that we were underneath the overhang of the seats above us. This prevented us from enjoying any of the fireworks during touchdowns, etc., but our view of the field was nice. We were on the end, inline with one of the uprights of the goal post. This view let us see the plays and prevented us from having to turn our head to see what was going on.

Good seats, but access to Qualcom is horrible

by SailorJL on 9/8/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Chargers - San Diego

Game and seats were fine, but the experience is all but ruined by the horrible access routes and accompanying traffic to Qualcom. One or two ways in and the same out and $25 to park in a lot that is in extensive need of repair. Left in what I though was plenty of time (6 pm, 20 minute usual drive to stadium) and did not reach our seats until midway into the second quarter. No wonder the Chargers want to move to improve fan access!!!

    Family Night Outting

by ladynightca on 9/8/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Chargers - San Diego

It is great to go to a night Charger game with your whole family. Even though it was just a pre-season game, it was still very exciting.

    Chargers vs 49ers Game

by JennHalls on 9/6/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Chargers - San Diego

It was an awesome venue.....but it would have been a nicer evening had the 49ers won! Chargers beat us 26-7....ugh!!!!! Otherwise, it was a fun night and a well organized venue. Transpertation was super easy (using the SD Trolly) to and from the game. I can't wait to go back!

    Most entertaining pre-season game

by zdoggy on 9/6/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Chargers - San Diego

Loved watching San Diego's 2nd and 3rd string tear up the 49ers. Running back Johnson was always jumping over and dancing around tacklers. Kaeding kicked more than half our points. And Billy Volek nailed some long bombs right into the sweet spot - including one for a touchdown. Even the referees are getting tested during pre-season. San Diego got more yards from defensive pass intererence than anything - thanks partly to the refs who handed at least one such undeserved call.

    Watch at home...

by Certamus on 9/5/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Chargers - San Diego

The traffic isn't worth it, and $25 parking at the stadium is ROBBERY, especially after you wait an hour in traffic 1/4 mile from the entrance trying to get in. Qualcomm Stadium is filthy. I love football... but it's just not worth it to go to a game at this venue. The traffic plan is horribly inadequate for accommodating that many fans. If you do go, take the train.

    alrite

by Driverside on 9/5/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Chargers - San Diego

It was a great game! My favorite team won and the audience was alive with a lot of energy. Though a lady behind me was all talking (shouting) all the time. I would have gave full stars, but yea it could have been better without the screaming for the other team.

    Chargers vs.49ers

by jjad4 on 9/5/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Chargers - San Diego

We had a great time. The field was amazing. The ticket special was nice, because we could actually afford to go, so watch for those specials. But, don't forget about the OUTRAGEOUS parking fee, that is my only complaint!

    Charger game was great

by Minniev on 8/23/09Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Chargers - San Diego

We are from New York and come to a game every other year. Stadium is great. Seats were great. Security personnel was outstanding. Charger girls were great. Game was great, but they lost. We had fun anyway. Parking was too expensive.
